***Pitt @ Wake Game Thread***

The refs missed two calls there in the last 15 seconds the ball went off Hildreth’s hand on the inbound play and there was a clear 5 second call on Wake right after that that they clearly didn’t call. Not the reason Pitt lost but still one or both of those calls go Pitt’s way maybe they are still playing right now.

It's possible this team finishes with zero wins over teams that make the tournament. There is just no punching above its weight class for this team. What you see is what you get, and we bring about the same quality of play every night. Only thing that differs is the opponent.

It is very monotonous. We're the equivalent of Wake in a lot of ways and that's why it was so close for the entire game. Usually if a team is that good and obviously better than the opponent, you win handily at the end. This helps Wake's chances and hurts ours for making the NCAAT.

Still needing 8 wins somewhere.

Pitt will be moved to last 4 in as a 11 seed now

These close losses to Louisville, Clemson and today will likely haunt them in March unless they pull some road upsets
Yea they are still in I think but they clearly need to win either at UNC or at SMU here in the next 10 days. You gotta get another quality road win on the resume here.

There’s a ceiling, including the coaching. Hopefully can at least do enough to get it to bubble day again.

Pitt will likely have to beat 'Ville or SMU along with 6 other wins in order to make the NCAAT. But the wins need to be quality wins. Losing to another bottom feeder team, like a BC or ND, will make our prospects very dim.

At this point, my guess is we head into the ACCT with the Loonardis of the world saying we need to win a game or two to get in. Only way that changes is if we somehow beat UNC and SMU on the road. If we lose a bad one, we are definitely in trouble.

What do you mean? EVERYONE knows how to beat Pitt. Put a body on these 2 and they wilt. Lowe had 2 assists today to go along with his 28% shooting. Comical.

Then someone needs to step up and compensate for our 2 best players somehow. Weve done it in previous games. Like I said, this Pitt team is getting monotonous. On offense, we just stand around a lot and count on Lowe and Ish to dribble drive or hit 3's. Too much spectatoring on offense.

Our front court is over matched every conference game. Also, when Ish has a bad shooting day Pitt has a hard time winning.

I agree. We'll need a road win against 'Ville, UNC and SMU somewhere in there. Win 2 of those and get the 6 home wins going into the ACCT while avoiding a bad loss, we're probably in. There is now a very narrow path for Pitt.

With this bunch, just take the Vegas spread and add or subtract a handful of points. We won't lose to a genuinely bad team, and we won't beat a genuinely good team. No hot shooting nights that lead to wildly out of character performances or anything like that. We just show up, play our bubblish game, and then leave. Kind of a boring team to follow.

Sallis 3 to break the last tie followed by the bad 3 miss by Lowe and resulting layup decided the game as Pitt never got the ball back with a chance to tie.

Sallis made all the plays down the stretch you need from your best player to win.

Can anyone really say they would be excited to see this team play in the tournament? Better question, would anyone pick this team in a bracket where you have invested some money?

Capel needs to play his bench more, and demand his guards stop hogging the ball, are pull them from the game. You all keep complaing about the same thing every game. Now if you all can see the consistent problem with the team, what cant Capel?

Coaching is the real problem. The guards do what they are doing because Capel allows them to. His idiotic reasoning for not playing Cummings and Kante more because of their defensive lapses is the most ridiculous thing he could say. Tell me how much better his starters are playing defense any better. They are the worst 3 point defending team in the ACC, they dont rebound, and they dont shoot the 3 well enough. Cummings and Kante was playing regular minutes early in the season and did well. Capel 's sorry ass waits until the ACC starts to play a 7 man rotation and wear his guard s down with all those minutes against constant double teams, ending up in bad shots. Then playing Cohren who has played 3 good games all year, but he keeps staying with him, when he is doing nothing.

Capel is the issue, and it wont change til he changes and actually start coaching. Calling a few TOs and then standing on the sidelines with your arms folded is not coaching. Your team keeps getting screwed with fouls, get a technical, do something other than acting like an assistant.

I think Dunn did - as much as he possibly could, but when everything about this offense goes thru those 2 - things like today happen. And you are EXACTLY spot-on correct - too much spectating going on. But... can you blame them? They could exert effort to get open and what are the chances one of those 2 pass them the ball?

I have to go back and look to see when Lowe had his last double-digit assist game. Ish... I won't even bother. Capel knew going on this guy was not an assist guy and got him anyways. Shows you what Capel is all about.

Exactly right. And that comedy in the first half with the no defense, followed by 2 moronic turnovers could not have been executed as well by the bench?? I was kinda wondering what was going on the sidelines with the coaches talking to Cummings. He probably telling him he could turn the ball over just as well. LOL

But the righteous Capel will be standing up proudly turning down his team's NIT bid in March.

No. We can't beat a top 20ish, maybe top 30ish, team. Even some of the Stallings and early Capel teams could do that. This team can't. If it's a Q1 game, it's a loss.

There is no such thing as a ACC ref in college basketball like there are in football. Refs do games in many conferences -- some do games in 5-6 different conferences in a week.
You are part of the conspiracy deep state. DOGE gonna find you out. lol.

I think that Capel's coaching is a huge part of the problem. He's not an X's and O's kind of gameday coach. Putting in a zone to confuse the opposition is something that a middle school coach can do. The assistants can do that.

The bigger issue is that Capel isn't preparing his teams well enough to win. Rolling the ball out there and letting Lowe and Ish dribble around while the rest of the team plays spectator is not preparation. But that's how they play so I have to assume that's how they prepared. It's not working. I also believe this team is very capable of playing good defense. They've done it in spurts in the past. But again, Capel isn't preparing the team to play that kind of stifling defense. A lot of it may have to do with conditioning, as defense requires energy.

Leggett, Lowe and Austin, 9-33 from the field, 2-12 on threes.

Everyone else, 15-23 from the field, 4-6 on threes.
Team clearly misses Carrington and Hinson. If they have both of them on the team still they win this game for sure today. Just too inconsistent shooting from your best players.

Didn’t read any of the posts on this thread but my take is as some of pitts bad D play and Lowe’s sometimes out out of control play, the officiating was bad too, even the announcers were pro wake, and that Antonelli lady didn’t hide it

Pitt and Wake shot basically the same number of free throws. There were bad calls against both sides.

When an opponent shoots lights out from 3, or even respectably after being one of the worst 3 point shooting teams, it's not luck. It's poor 3 point defense. That describes Wake against us. That describes pretty much anyone against us. We don't know how to defend the 3 without fouling. That's totally on the coaches. No bad luck and no coincidences.

Like the charging call against Lowe and the non charging call against hildreth

The charging call against Lowe was as bad of a call as you'll see all season. It was 100% a make-up call for the phantom foul on Leggett. The fact that it was right in front of Wake's bench subconsciously made the ref call the foul. That is a block 99 out of 100 times.
