Pitt will be hosting YSU next week

The common denominator in all of this is Capel. Team acted like they won a natty beating a crap Syracuse team at home, absolutely choked against 2-16 Notre Dame, played scared against Miami and couldn't defend; barely beat a 15-18 Georgia Tech team with a 5'2" coach, and now this thrashing. There's a reason why the league voted Capel coach of the year. Now we are stuck with him.

Not saying that to piss anyone off. It's just what's going to happen,

I just posted that I think we are on the outside looking in. We can still make it but need some help. Otherwise, hosting YSU is a good call given the geography.

I may be right after all when I said 4 ACC teams in November

Duke and Kentucky are two teams that can always bring it to a next gear in March. Both likely sweet 16 bound. Pitt can win a game or two.

The only reason why Pitt had a successful season is because Capel got lucky, recruiting a few talented and offensive minded players in the portal. He never taught them how to play defense, perhaps he doesn't know himself. Better talent = better success. His X and O coaching is still questionable. To have a decent team next year, we will have to hit the portal again because inexperienced freshmen (even talented ones) will not get it done.

Making a run to squeeze into the NIT would have made everyone pretty happy given the expectations of this season.

However, a free fall down into it that is looking very likely, would end up canceling a lot of the good will that was created in Jan and Feb.

Agree. The incoming freshmen, if they get here, will be minimal help at least initially and probably for an entire year. So Capel hopefully is scouring the portal heavily for some experienced guys to build another team around.

Duke is an elite blue blood program. If you want Pitt to get 4/5 star players, then you need put out NIL $$$.

I've given more than enough to Pitt athletics through the years. It's up to them now to find ways to attract the talent. I think it's time for the routinely cheapskate Pitt fans to show up.

You are the one who said it would be nice to land elite players. NIL $$$ just simply makes what the Golden Panthers were doing legal.

Sure. But as I said, I gave my money for years to the Golden Panthers and Panther Club and now that I'm on a fixed income, Pitt isn't going to get even my spare change. I'm well off compared to a lot of retirees, but I want to keep it that way. No need to waste my money now.

Once upon a time Pitt had high rolling donors happily buying players and delivering outstanding football teams (and briefly, basketball teams). The woke-before-woke-was-a-thing University slammed them down. I have associates involved in sports with other major universities and Pitt is the worst by far in coddling its donors. It’s a wonder there are any.

NIL provides new opportunities that keep the university hands directly off the money, and fans definitely should throw more into those. Of course, as it’s been noted by others, Pitt’s are largely invisible. That’s largely because the school can still present other obstacles anyway to prevent NIL from getting “out of control”. Reason being, Pitt doesn’t want men’s football or basketball to gain too much glory. That goes way back nearly 100 years (read the university’s history). Pitt admin and especially it’s politically charged faculty and students would revolt if it looked like 7 figures were being raised and paid to build championship football or men’s basketball teams.

Who cares about how much money people donate. This team is out. Still, it has been a fantastic season. Credit to these transfers for coming to Pitt. Regardless of where they end up, they should be looked at fondly, just like the 2001 team who put the program back on the map

This is right on

Yes and no. There have been administrations with varying degrees of athletic support over the years.

Pitt is in the middle of a search for a new chancellor. That is going to be a hugely important hire, as it usually is, because it sets the tone at the top. It is a lot easier to destroy than build, so a bad hire can do tremendous damage.

You cannot teach players to play defense when they get to this level. They should already know the concepts. The problem is guys like Hinson and Elliot just don't have the footspeed to be good defenders. Nelly is not as slow as those two but his diminutive stature makes him a liability as well. Then there is Fede, who I believe just wore down. He would have made all ACC defesive team, if the Conference season ended at the halfway point. So, essentially you had one good defender,Burton. That is why we had to win our games at the offensive end.

What we need for next season are better athletes. If Dior is back, that is one. Jeland Lowe would be 2. Not sure about Carrington. Fede should get stronger and is athletic enough to be a solid 5, at least defensively. The twins have potential, but they need to work on getting stronger and quicker. I would say to have a competitive team with a fighting chance, we need two athletic guards and at least one 4 that is the exact opposite of Hinson. A guy more like the kid from Georgia Tech yesterday. If Capel can fill these needs from the portal we should be able to be at least 500 in the league next year.

Yes but being relevant into March is a decent consolation prize if that were to happen. I’m not saying it will.
