Waldrum is going to be handing out a lot of pink slips next year. Wow.

The players who are going to be let go are the ones who aren't playing anyway, and probably are getting little or no scholarship money.

Pitt actually played 31 players last year. There were eight of them that played in four games or fewer, and a total of 60 minutes or less. So they could have easily only played 23. So even accounting for a couple players being hurt and missing the whole season, they could have easily had a roster of 28 had they wanted to.

What this is going to do is to push players who are essentially walking on at Pitt down a level to someplace like Duquesne, assuming that they'd rather transfer and play at a lower level rather than just become a regular student. But it isn't really going to affect someone like Pitt's ability to compete.

There’s also the question of whether or not Pitt will fully fund 28 players for WSOC. From what I have heard, even some B1G and SEC programs may not, or at least aren’t getting the vibes from their administration that they should assume they will have 28 funded spots.

Does the 28 roster limit mean 28 scholarships?
Yeah. They just created new roster limits and removed the scholarship cap. You can give out 28 full scholarships, or five full scholarships and 20 partial scholarships, or whatever combination you want.

I like that. Is football the same? 105 roster limit so can have 105 on scholarship or 70 with 35 walk-ons?

Yes, going forward there will be no more distinction between a head count sport and an equivalency sport. All sports can give full scholarships up to the new limit. But no one is required to give that many. And the scholarships are not required to be full scholarship for any sport.

But that roster limit is the hard limit whether they be walk-ons or not? So you cant have 105 scholarship football players and 20 walk-ons? Or 15 scholarship basketball players and 3 walk-ons?

You can have 105 players on scholarship. Or 95 players on scholarship and 10 not. Or 90 on scholarship and 15 getting partial scholarships. Or 1 guy on scholarship and 104 not. But you can't have a total of 106 under any circumstances.

Although I should say, they have not officially put the rule in place and many football coaches are arguing that 105 just is not enough. So is it theoretically possible that they could allow more? Yes. But that was not the original way it was going to work.

28 in WSOC seems tight, but how is 105 even necessary in football?

That's awesome. There are top programs who have essentially entire FCS rosters as walk-ons. It used to be that your walk-ons were D2/D3 level players nut now you have many kids choosing to walk-on at even places like Pitt rather than going to Duquesne, RMU, YSU, etc. Capping rosters at 105 means those extra 30 FCS kids Bama takes have to go to North Alabama or Chattanooga first and if they get good, they can transfer up.

It's not, but there are many football coaches who are arguing that it's not nearly enough.

NFL teams have 69 players if you count the practice squad and by some miracle, they are able to complete their season without having to forfeit for not having enough available players. College coaches will say NFL teams can pull in free agents mid-season or make trades and while that's true, its not that common. College coaches will also say that their true freshmen, especially linemen arent ready to play. 2 things: 1. Get them ready. 2. If everyone is in the same boat, then everyone will be playing more true freshmen.

105 is more than enough especially if they are all scholarship players. A team like Alabama will have 105 players that are higher ranked coming out of HS than a decent program like Pitt's highest rated recruit. They can survive.
