I will need a little help on this because my "basketball consciousness" didn't start until the '86-87 season so I don't really remember the Chipman days, but I don't recall a Selection Sunday where Pitt fans have had to sweat out a tourney bid in the 64+ team tournament era.

The worst seeds that I can remember are appearances in the 8/9 games in 1989 (lost to Ball State), 1993 (lost to Utah), 2005 (lost to Pacific) and 2013 (lost to Wichita State) and 2014 (beat Colorado). But I don't believe that in any of those cases, Pitt was sweating out a bid when the brackets were unveiled Sunday evening.

Anyone have any different recollections?

Even with a loss to UNC, I'm fairly confident we are in, but I will still be sweating it out all day.

We are in for sure this year, and we've never been sweating it out on Selection Sunday in our history.

Disagree with this. Seem to recall Pitt being around a 12 seed in 1985 and being mildly surprised they got in. That was the year they were dominated by a Louisiana Tech team led by Karl Monroe and Willie Simmons.

I was sweating out the1993 selection- that team lost to Cuse in the first round of the BET and seemed clearly on the bubble. This was before the mass consumption and instant publication of the RPI and the cottage industry that bracketology has become.

The 12 seed in 1985 was certainly a bubble team (perhaps before the cliche went viral).

Not true.

1985.

It all depends on a "definition" of bubble or "sweating it out." One could even say we are still on the bubble this year. But there was little doubt we were in the tournament in 1985.

Not true.

We went in to selection Sunday at 17-12. We got a 12-seed in a 64-team field. That's the very definition of barely making it in.

Yeah ... you are right. My bad.

My memory is different than the facts.

Of course, that was 31 years ago!

Is that the team that beat Idaho with a last second shot by Dwayne Wallace then we got beat by North Carolina? My memory of the 85 team is a little fuzzy.

17-12? and now 21-10, 10-9 vs. ACC teams is not good enough?

The difference back then was you didn't have all of these mid-majors getting at-large bids. The at large field was mostly all power conference teams.
