I think because of AAU current players respect coaches that haven't played at a high level much less than coaches who have had the recent success at the level of playing these younger college kids want to get to. More so with assistant coaches.

You really see this because all these high level AAU players get their personal training from trainers who aren't their coaches. X did a lot of training with Pat the Roc before coming to high school. Drew Hanlen, Mitch Lancaster, and Tim Grover are great examples because they have reputations of trainers/coaches that have worked with top basketball players.
