It still feels weird that kobe died. And with that I feel you have to be crazy to not have him in the top 10. His ability to score is crazy. You just can not name many if any modern day players better then him other then lebron

Then call me crazy ... but I'm looking at the analytics.

I was looking at overall stats, and I don't know if I could put Duncan that high. I know he won alot, but was he better than Malone (Moses) and Hakeem?

Duncan's analytics look better. Interestingly, the players whose analytics don't look as good are Bill Russell's.

Then why do you have Russell in your Top 7, but downgrade Kobe using the same analytics?

PS - I am just trying to stir the conversation. ;)

Seriously, I ranked my list the way I did, because I never saw Russell play, and can only go by the fact EVERY list I've EVER seen has had Russell no lower than 6th.

I agree with the notion presented above that the tragedy has added to his playing legacy a bit. Kobe was tremendous of course, but I think he was something of the scorer that he was much because he shot the ball so much. But my "memory" is of him missing a great deal along with "making." But he was an excellent defender too, and that matters.

This is all splitting hairs -- I think he's great but I don't have him into my top 10, but in my next 20.

Russell's wins and rebounds were off the charts. But he wasn't a major offensive threat. But considered one of the best defensive players of all time.

Russell's advanced stats have to be suspect because they didn't count steals or blocks until 74, right?

On the Big O debate, I think it's worth looking at his playoff career before the Bucks got Kareem. Oscar freely admitted he didn't view it to be "his job" to play defense: "that's why we have all these other guys." He and Jerry Lucas, Jack Twyman, Happy Hairston, Bob Boozer...they should have been better than a 45 wins/first round playoffs out if Oscar was so all-time.

Great player but I'm not sure I'd put him above Jerry West (elite defender in addition to his scoring) for the best guard of the 1960s, never mind on a Mt Rushmore. My preference will always be for great two way players.

Russell’s stats also do not include leading the Celtics to 11 NBA championships in his 13 seasons, including 2 as player-coach.
