PSU's Shoop Leaving? Recruiting Fall-Out

Now would be a good time for Shoop to leave. The Nits lose a lot on defense, and if he ever wants to be a head coach again, at some point he probably needs to move on and do his thing somewhere else for another HC besides Franklin.

Tennessee has a lot of good young talent on that side of the ball. Butch Jones severed ties with a coach that had been with him for several years dating back to his Central Michigan days. So obviously, he's targeting someone & Shoop appears to be that guy. That would mean that he most likely has blank check to offer Shoop and would probably match at least the $1.5 mil that LSU was going to pay last year. The coach that is on his way out at Tennessee only made a paltry $500,000.

This would appear to be a good move for Shoop. However, its not without some risk. Butch is going into year 4. He's done a great job rebuilding the program, but with the SEC East currently in shambles, and the Gators playing in Knoxville, anything less than a SEC East title are going to have the natives restless. Outback Bowls & Taxslayer Bowl victories over pathetic Big 10 opponents are only going to pacify people for so long.
Very astute observation, and if he succeeds in SEC like UTenn he will be Head Coach faster! Franklin may become a liability to his career like and after seeing what happen to long time friend and fellow staffer Donovan, Franklin comes before any Staffer or Friend that is for sure? Shoop built a good Defense at Vandy, and Top Ten one at Penn State at least in Statistics, he does that UTenn or another school, he will be a Head Coach in 1to 2 years?

yeah, oldpanther you keep saying that, Hudson to Michigan.. Problem is, they have about 5 other higher ranked recruits ahead of Hudson with very little room.. He isn't even plan B recruit but more like plan C or plan D.
Pitt needs Linebackers this year, and Coach Pat & Conklin knows how to develop and build them into superb Defensive Players! I see him playing on Day One at Pitt, but Hudson will decide his future his way!

Low taxes here in the south, good weather! Tennessee football games are great to go to, win or lose they are up for a good time on Saturday and grab brews at the tin roof

That's kind of what I am thinking. I think Shoop really enjoys being at PSU, being a PSU kid. But he essentially is losing his entire DL, which was the strength of the team. If he wants to be a head guy, and hey who doesn't, it is probably best to get exposure to another staff. That being said, it didn't hurt Narduzzi.

Maybe Shoop is looking ahead and sees the writing on the wall. Think about this. they were 7-6 (could have been 6-6 unless Johnson makes the fumble TD return against San Diego St when theywere driving to take the lead) with 3 future NFL players on the d line and a future NFL quarterback in Hackenberg.

The local guys here in Altoona like Geiger are already preparing for a lackluster 2016 (he's predicting 7-5 or 6-6) and is already jumping ahead to 2017.

I think Shoop really likes it up there so he has a difficult decision to make. Does he make the move or stay and take a chance going down with the rest of the ship.

Shoop's wife and family still living in Tennessee and rebuilding a Defense at UTenn not much different than Penn State? Shoop has been silent unlike before when he denied he was interested in the Auburn or LSU jobs?

Looks to be waiting it out this time? Good for him to be in demand and family not moving to State College 2 years now?

Shoop owns a house in State College, his one son attends State College High and his other son is a WR on Penn State, so his family does live in State College. There is definitely some inaccurate information being reported in this thread.

Recruiting likely wouldn't be effected too much because PSU has all coaches recruit all players unlike most schools, so it's not like there are recruits who only have a relationship with Shoop. Depending on who the replacement is though, the results on the field will probably be effected.

And the comment about another coach looking around, that was Brent Pry who is the Linebackers Coach and he was a finalist for the Head Coaching job at Georgia Southern.

Shoop was silent about LSU and Auburn until everything played out, but this time he did comment last week that he isn't interested in any lateral moves but is interested in head coaching opportunities. Everything that has been reported is that Tennessee has interest in Shoop, but there has only been speculation about Shoop's interest in Tennessee other than Shoop saying he isn't going to make any lateral moves.

Franklin said on Thursday before the MSU Game his Long Time Loyal Staff have been with him and they have a Plan that just needs more time?

Yet, on Monday he fired his Long Time Staffer and Friend, Donovan and had a OC hired within weeks? So, even Franklin gave out such information, did he not or was he planning to fire Donovan all along???

Cap, I think he's gone. Doesn't make any sense for him to stat at ups. Especially after reading you breakdown post.
CampbellLion gave another view and corrected much information put out on Blogs on Shoop and UTenn, I welcome and credit Campbell Lion for doing it, and trust his information that is in more detail and thank him for it!

Bob is a Pittsburgh Native with his Brother and has a done a good job for Franklin and Penn State! we shall see, but I think Shoop stays at PSU based on CampbellLion posts!

Rumor started over the weekend. I'd think somebody would be out there denying it by now but who knows? Pretty odd that the PSU writers are sitting on this. I'd think somebody would have exploited their "sources" by now to tell us either way. Then again, there seems to be consequences for crossing James too.

Perhaps he regards the Tennessee job as a step up and not a lateral move? Certainly the SEC is the "big leagues" of college football. Guess time will tell. Hail to Pitt!

Ah yes! Leave it to a nitter to give us the REAL story. They know the REAL truth on all subjects, including scandals, JoePa, etc...

Yeah, considering how sensitive they are to things on the internet, I find it surprising that they would not have squashed this yet, if he is staying. Each day that goes by, it doesn't help. If they kept things quiet like Pitt, it would be normal. But for a school who quickly lashes out at things, it is interesting there has been no response.

The fact that Shoop has not come forward and denounced this in the last 3-4 days means that there is smoke! Also, the SEC would be a step up from the Big10 outside of OSU & MI.

Lateral move meaning another Coordinator position. He stated he would only leave for a head coaching job. Obviously he wouldn't be the first coach to leave after claiming he wouldn't, but by turning down LSU last year and Auburn already this year you can understand why a lot of PSU fans believe him.

Not sure I saw that quote, but if you say so, I guess we will see. Personally, I could careless one way or the other. The one aspect of this that I do love is the fact that your fan base now must come back to the reality that all college football programs face...which is that coaches come and go...and that PSU is no longer a place where coaches go to coach until their retirement or death. Yes, there are better college jobs and better college staffs than what you have to offer in State College--welcome to reality! Hail to Pitt!

I think CampbellLion is all fairness did just that, Shoop has turned down SEC's Auburn & LSU Offers, and UTenn is in SEC too? According to CampbellLion Shoops has said, no Lateral Moves, and that includes all DC offers when they keep coming every week?

Shoop only wants a Head Coaching job and staying at Penn State may get it, if Franklin can't win 10 Games soon? I can see him hiring his Brother as OC too, someday soon when that Head Coach job comes open, somewhere or at PSU?

Correction PITTLAW, welcome to following NCAA Rules, Title IX, Clery Act, Athletic Integrity Agreement, Athletes Code of Conduct, Big Ten Rules & Compliance's, Penn State University Trustees, President & Athletic Director having Institutional Control over the Penn State Football Program, Athletic Players being treated as Students not Special Discipline by any Coach that brought shame to Penn State's Name and were required to put in 116 Freeh Reforms in 2012 that made Penn State Football face reality like all NCAA Football & Sports Programs, and not made up myths or magic slogans?

Franklin is actually doing better at Recruiting within all the Reforms and Rules than Paterno, not obeying them, and breaking them to protect his Program and Job!

I didn't know that JoePa or a scandal was being discussed. I thought we were talking about Shoop?

Another nitter trait... "Gee, I thought we were discussing football..."

It means you have no credibility when you say we have the facts wrong. It seems that NOBODY EVER has the facts correct when it comes to PSU and any potential negativity. You and your ilk proved that in the past during the last days of Joe Paterno. So the scandal is very relevant when it comes to credibility of facts...

Do you need a picture of the Shoop family in front of their home in State College? Tyler Shoop is a freshman at Penn State. Jay Shoop attends State College High, I can't prove his wife Maura's whereabouts but if you want to believe that she lives in Tennessee while her husband and two kids live in State College then go ahead.

If you want to turn this into a Sandusky thread then fine. Joe knew. Sue knew, all 107K knew. They all knew. Happy?

I'm pretty sure Paul Chryst lived in Pgh... And at least one of his kids played on one or more sports teams as a Pitt student... So what in hell foes Shoops son playing at PSU mean? I'd venture nothing. It's interesting they have a house in Tenn though.

He owned a home in the NHs. He also kept a home in the Madison area that he refereed to as a cabin.

He meant about Shoop's house

I don't find it odd in the least that the PSU writers are sitting on a story, seems to be their distinguishing characteristic.

PSU writers seem to be in the dark, it's going to be the Tennessee reporters that break the story if he does get hired. There's been some chatter of Chizik being considered as well.
