maybe, and I know very little about Tennessee but maybe, he sees Franklin's tenure at PSU as short lived and Tennessee's situation more stable. If Franklin gets fired, he is much more likely to get canned as he is to get the HC job. He could very easily be unemployed in a year if Franklin doesn't show improvement.. Lateral moves are one thing but I'd rather sign on with Tennessee and be looking at a guaranteed 3+ years rather than hoping psu can beat msu/ohio state/ or Michigan to keep the job you have..
Actually, the HC at TN is thought to be on a hot seat himself, so long-term stability is not what he is after.
I would ask Campbell Lion this question (I posted something similar in another post). If it makes no sense for him to make the move to TN as you point out, what is the reason he goes if in fact he does go? I'll suggest that whatever the answer is, its probably not good.

Anyone on their board that says something negative is actually a Pitt troll. They honestly believe that. It's hilarious.
The only thing that makes sense to me is he wants to be back in Tennessee. If he was just looking to leave PSU, why not take the LSU or Auburn jobs?
I would hope that Butch Jones is safe for a few years. I think he is a good coach and it has been a while since Tennessee has won 9 games in a season (9-4 this year and destroyed ranked NW in the bowl game). The last time Tennessee won 9 games was in 2007 with Philip Fulmer as coach (10-4). The last winning season prior to Butch Jones tenure was Lane Kiffin's 2009 team (7-6).
Jones did well at Cincinnati and he won the Liberty Bowl in 2011 by defeating SEC powerhouse Vanderbilt, coached by none other than the future hall of famer James Franklin.

It is interesting that when the discussions on Shoop to Tennessee first came up, it was pointed out that Tennessee hadn't yet fired their DC. Sounds like this was going on for some time now...

I have heard about some problems at Penn State, but nothing on Shoop leaving whatsoever, and I will be surprised if he does leave?
However, UTenn has many great Players coming Bak on Defense, here is the Link. I suspect UTenn being Ranked and with a Great Defense Group coming back, that and other Job well done against at Vandy, Penn State and UTenn and Shoop would garner even more attention to become a Head Coach.
Therefore, it makes sense this is a good time to leave instead of staying and maybe 6-6 or 7-6 another season at Penn State? State College is not a great place to live either. As well as, seeing Donovan being let go the way it happen?

Anyone also think that Jimmy had basically two layup years the past two years. Schedules set up to produce 9-3, at worse, 8-4 seasons.
Now next year, things change. They have to come here. Temple is still on the OOC. They go AT Michigan. Host tOSU and MSU. And have Iowa as a crossover game. Even their easy games in the Big 10 like Indiana and Rutgers are on the road. They will have a new QB. 6-6 next year is a reasonable expectation. Combine that with JF's braggadocio ways, the fact he is not one of the cult, he doesn't look like most cult members, and well.....maybe Shoop sees the handwriting on the wall. If Franklin and staff is jettisoned next year, Shoop will have to look for another job and will find one no doubt. Moreover, it is no secret among PSU Former Players Alumni that they lack confidence in Franklin as a Coach, in spite of his good recruiting. Just like many Pitt Alumni Former Players and Big Contributors would tell me how much they hate Steve Pederson and why and give me specific examples! Both are spot on too, and proved to be right, in spite of being challenged by less smart Posters that thought they knew more on that aspect.

Yet, many Pitt Posters took exception with my Posts and conclusions and they turned out to be more right too on Franklin's Coaching problems at Vandy and now seen at PSU? Oh, there is a rift alright, but goes deeper to many more rifts not just one? I can confirm that and they are bigger than many know and not limited to A.D. and Jimmy Franky! So I can't predict that until all those issues are resolved to be fair, honest, and forthright to answer you questions?
