Purdue vs FDU

I don’t watch a ton of non-Pitt games. And rarely watch a 1 seed first round game because of the typical bloodbaths those are.

But I had a hunch on this one, after seeing how lame they looked in the bits and pieces I watched of their game with PSU. I am looking past the obvious (deserved) disdain of PSU to admit they are a decent team. But they should NOT have been that nearly equal to what was supposedly the best team in the nation, or close to it.

So this really is not nearly as big surprise as when Virginia lost.

Has to be one of the worst coaching jobs in the history of the ncaa. How does your best player only get one shot in the last 12 minutes. How do you not even attempt to feed him when you’re down 5 with 30 seconds left. How do you run all that time off the clock

Just awful

Hope the big10 keeps losing. Sick of the big10 love fest
remember 2021 when they lost to an 11-seed, 13-seed, and 15-seed in the same tournament? Nothing will change and the conference will be overrated again next year.

Back in December we beat FDU . Who would of thunk it that we both are advancing to the second round at that time. Pitt hoops is back. I have not enjoyed the tourney the past six years for obvious reasons but you cant beat March Madness when youtteam is in it and getting wins. These four days are incredible.

Indeed. The refs whistled any harsh breath by FDU on Edey, so at worst he’d be going to the line a lot, frequently with And Ones, plus getting FDU guys systematically fouling out. He seems not terrible at the Foul line so they’d get regular points, plus they STILL had the size advantage even when he was at the line so they’d likely grab their share of misses with easy put backs.

It’s reminiscent of football coaches (and we’ve had some) that could put away inferior teams fairly easily (if not excitingly) just pounding the ball. Instead, insist on looking flashy with risky plays and turning the ball over. Take what you are given, win, and advance. These guys looked like they wanted to prove they could blow a team out with lots of threes but it isn’t their game.

I haven’t followed college basketball in recent years and only just realized Purdue lost in the first rounds to 13,15 and 16 seeds in the past 3 years???

How can you even give a team like that a high seed? That’s pathetic.

Purdue always chokes. They had great teams under Gene Keady that also flopped in the tourney.

Purdue was in the sweet 16 last year.

It kind of seems as though the committee seeded this team #68 just because they didn’t win their conference and got in on a technicality (though whose to say they went all out in the final as they had already qualified for the NCAAT at that point).

Do they really think FDU is worse than 14-20 Texas southern. Just seems super lazy by the committee who is supposed to be professional.

But @TD_6082 was out here telling me Painter was a good coach.
Painter is a good coach. He took over a Purdue program that was 7-21 the year before he arrived and had only been to ONE NCAA tournament in the previous 4 years.

Dude has a career .683 career winning percentage. (.676 at Purdue)

He's won 4 Big Ten regular season titles & 2 Big Ten tournament titles.

He's been to the NCAA tournament 14 out of his 18 years at Purdue. He's been to 6 Sweet 16s and one Elite 8.

Purdue wasn't even in the preseason top 25. So to earn a #1 seed, especially with their mediocre guard play, is pretty damn good.

No doubt Painter and Purdue had no business losing to FDU & they deserve to be heavily criticized. And it's fair to say that Painter's teams haven't performed very well in March. But to suggest he isn't a good coach is laughable.

I also think he’s a very good coach. But wow what an epic fail last night. Frankly I enjoyed the hell out of it-if I don’t have a strong rooting interest I root underdog all the way and FDU was as under of a dog as has ever been. Just another example that if your shots aren’t falling in March you’re going home.

This one is gonna look even worse when FAU runs FDU out of the gym.

Painter is a good regular season coach, but his sphincter tightens up in the tournament and his players take on his personality.

Hackett anyone?

He's done okay in the tourney. He really shit the bed this year though. I think Painter generally overachieves in the regular season. Purdue is not a blue blood that signs tons of elite talent.

If a non-blue blood can find a coach that can consistently get them to the tourney, and usually as a 5 seed or higher, odds are they will eventually they will have a year where they make a deep run in March.

The choke jobs have become a trend.
