Reality with AD Greene

“Right now, the best way that we can acquire talent — and the national landscape acquires talent — is through money,” he said. “It used to be about scholarships and facilities and some of the shiny stuff. It went from glitz and glam to green.

Yet we have committed so much money to Victory Heights.

I believe Greene will be the most consequential hire in Pitt athletics history. He will......

1) find our next head football coach

2) he will own......positively or negatively, the fund raising results in the new NIL world

3) He will more than likely cut the baseball program, and be involved in developing that perfect piece of land for some type of revenue generating building (s)

4) he may even sh%tcan Capel

When his tenure is done here, the wins and losses may not compare to Heather's work with non revenue sports.....but Greene will leave his mark. What that mark is will be Pitt's place in the new world.

I for one hope he crushes it.

Revenue generating building?

Revenue generating building?

Picture some office buildings developed by Pitt hired contractors on land that Pitt owns.

I would guess, there would be a rather significant number of businesses that in some way are related to University activities. Or.....I would guess the rental rates in that area are less than say downtown Pittsburgh but would work for companies.

I would also think the federal govt may have an interest in a location at some level at or near the University as well as near UPMC.

I mean....i am no real estate expert nor am I a University administrator

But anyone looking objectively at this understands the value of that land as developed is far more than as a ballpark.

Pitt owns that land. Pitts BOT have a responsibility to act in the best interests of the university.

To suggest this isnt plausible doesnt add up to me.

Why would you cut the baseball team? Especially in the ACC? That’s moronic … revenue building? LOL 😂

Between coaches salaries, travel, outfitting players, NIL, the outlay im guessing is close to 7 figures a year.

Pitt athletics doesnt have something better to do with that money with April's decision looming?

You may want to re-think your position, bro.

And brace yourself. Because schools will be cutting non generating sports all over America.

Greene obviously doesn’t read this board or else he would know even if some of our fans had twenty nickels to rub together they wouldn’t give it to Pitt athletics. They’d rather just complain.

Universities shouldn't be supporting professional sports. If I had a billion dollars, I could think of a billion reasons for donating elsewhere.

In the SEC, they can think of a billion reasons to give a 5 star QB money instead of real charities.

4 sports programs use the Peterson Sports Complex. It isn't going anywhere.

Enrollment at universities has dropped significantly in the past ten to twenty years, especially amongst men. Over 60% of college students today are women.
You're right, those 35 baseball players (some of whom are on full or partial scholarship) are the make or break point for the university to continue to function that they wouldn't be able to fill otherwise. I mean, it's not like they could increase their acceptance rate by 0.05% to make up that difference.

Yes, but I'm not convinced that turning portions of Pitt's landlocked campus into RIDC park is the solution. Now if you told me UPMC needed another hospital, maybe Pitt could give up some land for that since UPMC seems to be a large, perhaps largest, driver of the region's economy.

Consider it a form of DEI to draw white men.

I cannot remember the last time I was called or sent a letter or even email requesting money for Athletics.

Perhaps that could be where you start.

Federal funding for PITT is going to be slashed either way as they are not meeting projected federal hiring and DEI laws. The Pete is going to turn into the world’s largest wasp nest if things do not turn around quickly.

Baseball at Pitt has been, at best, mostly a losing proposition.
It is hamstrung by having to compete as a northern team in a southern sport in a conference with dominant and historically championship competitors.
The regular College baseball season ends in the middle of May. The city of Pittsburgh is just thawing out at that time.
I try to see Pitt baseball games and struggle to find home ACC baseball games at Pitt after April.
Pitt cannot hope to compete in ACC baseball. Ever.
I agree with some of the posts in this thread.
Re apportion the money spent on Baseball to the other sports which make sense in our climate.
Ask Syracuse why they don’t have baseball as a varsity sport.

For smaller schools this is a bigger deal than for large universities. Pitt can easily fill those spots with non-athlete students.
That's correct. That said, ACC baseball gets significant media attention in the scheme of non-revenue sports and baseball is the highest profile college sport in the spring season. Every game is broadcast on the ACCN. I don't see Pitt dropping baseball from a marketing point of view. As one of the only schools in a baseball power conference in the northeast, Pitt should have a niche it could exploit.

I'd be more worried about them looking at other sports to cut or deemphasize.

Pitt is building research facilities like Pitt Bioforge, but off campus in Hazelwood, or the Assembly project with UPMC in Bloomfield. It isn't going to give up any land up in Oakland.

Probably not. Non generating sports draw tuition paying students to participate.

Travel? Recruiting budget (unless you are suggesting club sport only)? Apparel, equipment, liability insurances? Facilities maintenance?

A 20 million dollar responsibility headed our way. 20 million i might add that Pitt doesnt have in the sofa cracks.

Quite frankly, continuing current use of the land that the ballpark sits on is in fact giving up land in Oakland.

It is a waste of time and money for Pitt to have baseball. Cut it and add men's lacrosse and turn that into a lacrosse stadium. Baseball has no chance. It's a southern sport.

I've often wondered why college baseball coaches don't take a trip to the DR and bring back 20 players. This is essentially what men's soccer programs do in Europe.

Because all of the good players in the Dominican sign with MLB teams when they are 16 years old.

Sure, there are occasionally players who fall through the cracks and develop late, but for the most part there are no good 18 or 19 year old Dominican players who aren't under contract to an MLB team.

There aren't D1 level players that the MLB teams don't sign? I'm not sure that's true. I would bet that if Pitt went down there and publicized a tryout, they could get 20 guys better than the ones they have. The argument you are using is the same thing you can say about soccer. Arent all the good players signed by the pros at 18? Yes. But we get the ones who got cut.

But are those players going to want to come here and attend college classes, in a language that they probably do not speak, just so they can play baseball?
