These are uncommitted TEs with Pitt offers:

(1) Steve Mahar, Jr. Rochester, NY. Has made unofficial visits to Pitt, Syracuse and Rutgers. Took only official visit to BC. Rivals’ forecast (recruiting writers not fans) has him 100% to Syracuse.

(2) Joe Royer, Cincinnati. Has 0% interest in Pitt per Rivals. Wants to go to tOSU and took official visit there last week.

(3) Luke Lachey, Ohio. Has taken official visits to Iowa and MSU and apparently will choose between them.

(4) Charles Finley, NJ. Has been to Rutgers multiple times, but Rivals experts are unanimous on him going to Maryland.

(5) Sam Daugstrup, Cleveland. Pitt, GT and Vandy are his only P-5 offers. May be holding out for Wisconsin. He says he hears from Pitt but he hasn’t visited.

(6) Carter Boatright, Georgia: Pitt is his only P-5 offer but does have UCF offer. Pitt offer was in late May.

(7) Clay Caudill, Ohio. Has quite a few good offers but hasn’t made any visits other than Rutgers.

(8) Cam Large, Massachusetts. Highest rated uncommitted TE we have offered, but lists 4 schools he is interested in and we aren’t one: Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State and Wisconsin. Has taken officials to all but Georgia.

Realistically, there only appear to be 3 we have any shot at. And, all three are likely to wait until December to make any official visits. Who knows what other offers they will get by then.

grad transfer strategy for TEs isn't a terrible option, especially for a position like TE>.

The other possibility on a TE would be a WR who can grow into a TE. There are 4 or 5 we have offered who are uncommitted and have the height for the position. Whether any have the frame to put on the weight to play it, I don’t know. None of the players we have offered as Athletes look like potential converts.

Do we know if Pitt invited any of these guys (or any others) to take an OV to Pitt? It seems as if Pitt wants 1 and the only TE prospect I'm aware of that OV'd was Rawlings.

Based on what has taken place w/r/t the commits so far for the 2020 class, it's pretty clear that the OV is a VERY important step in the process. So keeping an eye out for official visitors is important. Right now we're in a recruiting dead period until 7/24. So can't be any until at least then.

You have a few potential TE’s in the incoming class - Wright, Collier, and George. There are some guys on the current roster that might get moved to TE and some that RS last year.

Charles Reeves is trying to earn his way back onto the team. He has potential, but needs to get his act together. He was a 4 star TE who RS here, transferred to YSU, and is now at Juco. A name to keep an eye on.

Yeah. Obviously, nobody we're talking about right now from a recruiting perspective (Rawlings included) is a 2019 guy.

The TE's for 2019 are all presently on the squad. Have to see how they are used and able to perform in Whipple's system. There is no doubt there is not much proven returning production in the pass game from the current group; at least under Watson there wasn't. Can that change this year? Won't know until the games are played.

Short-term it’s probably a necessity. Long-term I don’t think it’s something we want to rely on.
I agree. In a perfect world, we get one the old fashioned way.

The longer carrigan stays at te, the more I think the move to tackle won’t happen. So even if Collier moves you still have 2 for ‘20 and possibility of someone like wright so that would be 3.

With all of the jumbo athletes they brought in last year- a couple of them should become good options here.

Personally, I like the 3 tackles look.

Nate Temple, a “DE” recruit from last year looked more like a TE prospect to me than a DE. And especially so after the DEs who have committed in the current class.

He came in listed as 6-4 and 230.

He was a bit of a head scratcher of a recruit. Only other offer was Mid Tenn State...

Go Pitt.

Walt used that look and had a very effective offense. Ben Kopp and Mike Bosnic come to mind as guys that played that role.

Agree there are several versatile players on the roster who could end up at TE. As you mentioned Wright and George have talent to play several spots. A few of the incoming DE’s also played TE in HS as well. RS Frosh Mimes is an athlete with potential.

Not sour grapes because Rawlings didn’t pick Pitt, but right now Rawlings is a blocker and may develop into a pass catcher. We have blockers in Carrigan and Collier (but Collier could also convert to OL).

Most important we have a real OC who will make things work with or without a TE. When he had good pass catching TEs they got the ball and when he didn’t he used his other weapons.

Sam Williams could be a TE.

Just curious. There is a story now on the Premium board on the same topic. Are there any other TE prospects that I missed?

Reeves? Where are you getting that info? He couldn't even get on the field at YSU and quit them in the middle of the season. He's a stone cold bust and that ship has sailed.....

In this offense - Think of Dorin Dickerson type TE
Hopefully. More a dynamic H back type than 3rd OT.

It's why I advocate for Matthews getting a shot...he can block very well too.

Or...if Ford flops at Safety (much like how Dorin flopped at LB) ...give him a shot. I have no idea if he can reliably run routes and catch ... but nobody knew if Dorin could either. He blossomed, and rode that position to the NFL. If Ford's capable as a receiver at all, I think he could be the asterisk the offense needs. Don't waste a season (like they did with Dorin) if Ford is reluctant as a defensive player.

I don't think there is anything reluctant about Ford's game on defense. If he doesn't play a lot it's going to be because he's too aggressive and makes too many mistakes. Frankly, if I have to watch Stocker play because he's an upperclassman and knows the assignments, my head might explode.

I've probably made 5-6 comments over the last few years about it and it never happened. I will never understand why they didn't put Aaron Matthews in the TE spot. Have him put on another 20lbs. He's already up to 220. The kid is a great blocker. Would have been his best chance to make it to the next level.

He's a good blocker as a standup WR. I'm not sure how good of a blocker he would be if he lined up in a 3 point stance.

I will give a few possible reasons. The staff promised to keep him at WR when they recruited him. The staff asked him last year and he said he wanted to remain at WR. He doesn’t have the body type to add 30 good lbs. and maintain his athletic ability.

Let's not get too hung up on semantics. If there's a position where he's on the field a lot, involved in passing plays, integral to the offense, able to call attention to himself to the NFL, he should be interested. Yes he might be blocking, when not out in a pattern. But that was the bulk of what he did when he made into games last year as a "wide receiver" ... which wasn't tremendously often enough, because for those traditional wideout positions, he apparently wasn't considered good enough to play ahead of Mack or Ffrench.

We're not talking of Steve Watson type of TE either, a third OT ... but a position that is becoming one of the most dynamic in the sport in recent years. More and more pro teams are using. A good place to be.

It is getting to nitty-gritty time, if he has visions of making a living at this sport on Sundays, he needs to make a mark. He should be begging the coaches to make him Dorin II rather than Kevin Weatherspoon II.

I think the TE position is getting to be a difficult position to recruit. There are very few true standout guys that can block a DE or DT well on a running play and then be able to turn around and be athletic and fast enough to be effective in the passing game. Besides QB, TE has to be the toughest position to fill.
