Report: Louisville hires Satterfield away from App State

That's a smart play on Louisville's part - hire a good coach who has a history of recruiting a bunch of good players without the use of bagmen.

Terrible hire. Zero big school experience and from a crap league. Of course I am not sure who would take that job right now.

Worked well for OSU when they hired Tressel. App St was big time in FCS before their jump to FBS and their program didn't miss a beat under Satterfield.

This isn’t a slam dunk IMO. Appalachian St was a powerhouse under Jerry Moore who came before Satterfield. App St has very good infrastructure. It could work, but Brohm would definitely have been the better hire.

Good hire. But there are no sure fire successes. Unless you hire a saban or a Meyer they are all essentially crap shoots

Satterfield has been with the program for years; he was the OC before he was named the HC.

Yes, solid hire.

Louisville kind of needed to reinvent the culture at the school, which started with getting rid of Petino, and now Petrino. One letter differentiated their names and perhaps not a lot else in terms of ethos in coaching.

They got their invite to the ACC. To this day, not sure it was the right fit. Now that they are in the big leagues, play the game straight. Increase commitments to excellence on and off the field or court.

Hiring outside the network of alumni not a bad thing further to reshaping Louisville's image.

I have not heard of a single problem with Satterfield in terms of NCAA or in how he treats players.

And the guy is a very good head coach.

Actually it is Pitino and Petrino. 2 Letters but you're right about their ethics.

Satterfield, I think, will do a great job with the resources that U of L will give him. This year was such a dumpster fire for them he will need some time to turn it around.

I think Narduzzi has done ok. But I tend to favor bringing in a head coach who's done it successfully at a lower level, vs a lifelong coordinator, even at a top program. There wasn't a likelihood they'd snag a decent FBS head coach with what has been happening there, so I see this as a good hire there at this point and time

We'll see. This could be a great hire. Or not. Recall Louisville's hiring of Steve Kragthorpe from Tulsa when Petrino left L'ville the first time. He was supposedly also a "can't miss" hire HC from a non-P5 power. But it ended up being a big failure.

As others have mentioned, it can be very hard to predict head coaching success. Especially without any previous P-5 HC track record to go by.

exactly. Tressel came from YSU and was wildly successfull. Wannstedt had a great resume and should have been a perfect fit here. You never know.

But Petrino did leave a pretty big mess for Kragthorpe to clean up. He still wasn't very good though.

Wanny had a .485 winning % as a HC before he came to Pitt. That isn’t a great resume.

Not sure L'Ville was a big mess when Petrino left the first time. After the Kragthorpe fiasco, Charlie Strong did a nice job there. Good enough that it got him the Texas gig. But of course, THAT didn't go so well for Texas either. It got Charlie a LOT of $$$$$ though.

what about Pete Carroll's? Gene Stallings? Many average NFL coaches did well in college.

Wanny had every box checked. Alumni. NFL head coach, co-oordinator on a National Championship college team. Seriously, what more could you want in a candidate for the Pitt job.

Satterfield is probably the hottest name from the G5 in terms of up and comers.

As for Jerry Moore building a strong program infrastructure there, that is a fair point. But Satterfield was an assistant of some sort there for like 10 of those years, so he was part of that too,

Who knows if it works out but most of the college football following country will view this as a good hire, and it's easy to see why. He'll also know the conference geography for recruiting.

Carroll had a .563 winning %. A lot more success than Wanny.

Bo Pelini would have been the best choice out of the final 3 (Cav, Wanny, Pelini) in hindsight.

Not sure I agree. Pelini lost four games every year at Nebraska, a program with a lot of advantages over Pitt, and now is at FCS. Overall, I think it shows we may have been barking up the wrong tree with three NFL coaches as our finalists?

Tressel also never won a game without extensive cheating. So there's that..
