1 - S.Miller - Board fantasy and terrible choice (FBI)
2 - T.Matta - Bad back - Offered the Georgia job
3 - T.Crean - Supposedly not a consideration for either side
4 - D.Hurley - Most have him going to UConn - Thamel has Pitt the favorite

5 - C.Jent - May or may not be getting strong consideration
6 - M.Shrewsbury - Name did not come out of the blue
7 - R.Sanchez - Seems to have a following
8 - B.Knight - Has a following - Most consider him not qualified

9 - E.Grant - Often mentioned - Big step up in class
10 - M.Schmidt - On several lists - Probably too old and uninspiring
11 - J.Brannen - Young up and comer - My choice for someone from this category

12 - E.Musselman - Wishful thinking? - Can't see him as a fit at Pitt

Most recent mentions (by PSN)
13- J.Becker - Fantastic winning pct - Big step up in class
14- A.Enfield - Enfield II - See Miller and the FBI
15 - B.Jacobsen - Solid coach - Coming off 2 down years - Would be a hard sell

16 - N.Oats - Signed new 5 year extension

How many realistically remain from this original list ?

How many realistically remain from this original list and how would you rank them?

Pick five

My five would be Hurley, Jent, Shrewsbury, Brannen and Jacobsen.

Anyone but Hurley out of that group would be a major disappointment.

Well then you better prepare yourself, because there's a good possibility it'll be someone else besides Hurley....

Were you disappointed when Pitt hired Howland? Dixon? Look how they turned out. Keep an open mind whomever they hire because we don't know how it will turn out...

I was not disappointed at all with Howland, had watched his teams and liked everything about him.

Wasn’t so sure about promoting Dixon, was glad to be mistaken.

Just watched St. Bona beat UCLA. Those guys play hard. While not popular on this board, Schmidt would better than many on this list.

But how much different would things have been had Pitt hired Calapari than Dixon?

I was impressed with St Bonnie as well. Not sure how much x n o coaching is involved though. He’s got some high energy talent there and he pretty much lets them go at a fast pace with a lot of freelancing.

Mike Cronin, if they can pry him loose.
I love Mick and don't understand the vitarol towards him from many. I thought he would have been a tremendous successor to Dixon.

However, I think his team has a very clear path to the Final Four this season in the SOUTH REGION, especially with UVA losing a key cog. Unfortunately, I think that ship has sailed w/ him ever coming this way. He might be a good fit down the interstate at Louisville.

He’s a great coach, people not wanting him at Pitt are delusional.

That being said he’s not a realistic candidate, no matter what SMF says.

Agreed - but do you not think he was a more reasonable possibility two years ago? It certainly would have been akin to Buzz jumping from Marquette to VT. His regional recruiting ties in Cincinnati would have likely been parallelistic with Pitt's. Seemed like a logical fit at the time. Oh well.

I know some people don’t think it’s a big deal, but from what he’s said them opening up the new arena next year is a big deal to him. He mentions it all the time.

I never took his UNLV flirtation seriously. It reeked to me of Dixon’s almost yearly talks about leaving to bargain for a salary increase. I think if he does go it will be to a place with a lot more stature than Pitt or UNLV.

If we can't get a healthy Matta, I would like to take a chance with Sanchez. Good recruiter and plays a style I think caters to the fan base.

I’m not disagreeing per say-
But despite perception not aligned with reality-
With the exception of the Steven Adams year

We’ve not been a defense centric team in about a decade

I can't find it on the internet, but after UNLV waved a $3MM/ year deal at Cronin, didn't Cincy lure him back with a deal which will eventually pay $3.5MM? I think it was much like Dixon's contract, where the first couple years paid at his existing contract rate before the new, higher deal clicks in.

If so, and with his new arena opening soon, he's not coming here.

they are senior dominated, they played really hard for all 40 minutes, and UCLA looked like they didn’t want to be there. Standing around and settling for jump shots when they had 2 7 footers out there. That team just took it to them at both ends for 40 straight minutes.

Matta is/was my choice. None of the other names on the list excite me. Hurley would be my second choce I guess.
Same although Hurley would definitely be my second choice. If Sean Miller becomes available I'd say go all in for him because nobody excites me much either. There are some candidates I could live with, just please don't end up with someone like rick stansbury.

When evaluating the next Pitt basketball coaching selection we should not be lowering the bar by comparing him to Stallings but rather does the next Pitt coach have what it takes to be eventually as good if not better than Jamie. That was why we had searched for a new coach when Stallings FELL into our laps.

If you are talking about the Big East Dixon 115-57 that is pretty much an impossibility. Anyone that expected Pitt to be able to do that was delusional.

If you are talking about the 28-26 ACC Dixon, I am sure there are a few coaches available who might be capable of doing that.

Or you can just forget the regular season and look at do you think this candidate can put us in position to make the tourney every year, the best years being able to make a run to the elite eight or even final four, and at least a couple sweet sixteen trips. Because I agree there's no way anyone will come here and dominate the ACC like Dixon did the big east.

That is asking a lot. I don't think any of the names out there can produce anything close to that.

not much (most of Dixon's stretch Pitt was one of the winningest programs in college basketball) ...Pitt, in case you have not noticed is not and was not at that time, Kentucky, and was not a top 5 program of all time...Kentucky with Calipari does not equate to Pitt with Calipari.

Cal didn't go to UK until 2009-10. He spent several years at Memphis before that and recruited players that wouldn't give Jamie Dixon the time of day. He went to 2 Elite 8s, a Sweet 16, and a Championship game in that time frame before moving on to UK.

now, bring in the vacated wins and re-do the math...
