Rooney's gone cheap again with Heinz Field

The Rooney's used Pitt as an excuse to help get taxpayer funding for Heinz Field, then worked behind the scenes to nix the downtown to Oakland T extension and add the T extension to Heinz Field.

So let's not pretend that they are friends of Pitt.
Or anyone else. Which is ok, because as Dean Martin infamously quoted Calvin Coolidge, the business of America is business.

That could actually become the hue of the new seats ... pink and white to represent the sausage gristle. It certainly won't be Pitt colors because, dam, we don't even know what those are year to year.

Well then, sausage colored seats are perfect!

This is true. They want to make as much money as possible, and if you are in their way, best move. But, let's not hold them to some high standard of integrity or friends of Pitt.

Still not enough of a palate to accurately portray all of the different colored Pitt merch worn in the stands.
Nice! Now we're tying MULTIPLE Threads together! If we could only now figure out this is related to the Paterno movie and Paris Ford's eligibility, we'd have page 1 nearly covered.

Don't forget - Old Man Rooney only agreed to draft Hank Poteat after Steve signed over the Script to his name and changed the gold to something not so close to that of the Steelers.

Good one. You kid but I said before the draft this year that the Steelers might actually draft JC because it will look great for them. He was a no risk pick. Even if he never plays a down, it's a story they can sell.

I'm sure that was some consideration, but I they still are going to draft players that can help them win. Some Pitt fans postulate that the Steelers are privy to character issues of Pitt players due to shared facilities. That may be true to some degree on the whole, but there's no doubt that helped James.

To an extent. But 3rd round makes it iffy for them. If James continues to be nicked up and misses time, fickle Steeler fans (who also tend to be PSU or WVU fans as well, or at least, not really Pitt fans at all) will start to bitch about JC as a "waste"of a high pick. It will happen as soon as this month too, as Bell continues to sit out. Steeler fans will definitely pine for the Ok guy who punched out the girl in the bar.

it can create over 281 trillion colors? Im calling BS. you make that claim you better be able to back it up. I want a list of all the colors it can create and im confident, no way in hell is it 281 trillion. 467 billion maybe but no way 281 trillion..

Hey, in all seriousness, maybe they didn't want to go too big? Bigger isn't always better. I mean, you go to a game, maybe you want to watch the game a bit, the actual field. I mean there is a thing as too big. We've all had that buddy who bought that giant projection TV back in 90's and put it in his living room that was like 15' X 17'. Thing made you sick looking at it cause it was so damn big. Maybe rooney's didn't want to be "that guy."

I had a friend that went to a cowboys game not long after they new stadium opened. He said that damn big screen along the sideline ran from like the 20 to the other 20 yard line. he said it was so damn big you literally had to watch it, you couldn't look away. not sure that's a good thing.
Hidden in there , inside 281T are Pitts 2 new colors....

For this year that is

well are those posts any more ridiculous than the "Rooney's are here to kill pitt football and ruin my tailgating experience" posts that we see on here daily? Personally, I laugh at both sides but have to file these types into the proverbial "Tin hat" folder.

I'd choose both groups over the "Steelers are moving to cranberry" group though, that's for sure..
Someday the Steelers WILL move to a palace in the burbs. Unless the game undergoes a drastic 180.

I suppose then we'll be left with Heinz... if we are stl playing football by then.

Or we can renovate and downsize Heinz

He's just saving up money so he can donate hundreds of millions to his alma mater like Ross (Dolphins owner) did to Michigan, Pegula (Bills owner) did to Penn State, Steinbrenner did to Ohio State, and many more that I forget.

The better solution is to allow the Heinz Field bathrooms to become old, let the troughs start to rust, and then use that as an reason to build a new stadium for both Pitt and the Steelers... cause once the troughs get too old, the entire stadium needs to come down!!!

problem is unless the new stadium is built over top of Heinz, it won't be on the North side. Unless they demolish and play games at Mountaineer field for a year. I'm sure WVU would love that for the Steelers. But not so much us.

Really doesn't explain why they've ignored the QB position in the draft but you're not wrong. I do think JC was a "safe" pick for a ton of reasons but mostly to balance out all of the dirtbags they employ.
As a Pitt and JC fan I loved that the Steelers picked him.

As a Steelers fan I question the round.

really? I think I was objective with my love for JC as a steeler fan. Tough to separate the two but steelers absolutely need a Rb. You think we picked JC too early? Man, I definitely disagree with that. we will find out though, that's the nice thing. for once, we will find out IF this pitt player was worth it.

I'm always astonished when teams go crazy on a RB that can't play three downs. I think that's the only reason JC was "okay" in the 4th round.

We'll see for sure. I think we're seeing now one of the reasons I thought the the round was a surprise. Tendency to get nagging injuries. That and I'm not sure he can be versatile enough to be a 2nd Bell. But I'd love to see him succeed beyond wildest dreams.

I used to be like this but you can definitely go too big with these flat screens. I know it almost sounds chickish to say this but ive seen obnoxiously big TVs in smaller rooms and it comes off as ugly..
Yes! We know people with a 60 in TV in an relatively small (80 inch room) and it actually gives you vision issues since you get back /away from the monster enough to appreciate the game!

We (excuse me) Mrs Buffett expanded our house for lots of reasons one of which was she wanted a 60 in Big Screen TV since she's/we are Football, Hockey, College Basketball ( hates the NBA), Baseball, Golf, & Car Racing fanatic! Oh yes skiing , and tennis are on a lot!
Mrs Buffett isn't a movie "chick."

Happy Wife , Happy Life, I stand behind that statement!

I would have liked to the ad space completely eliminated and the whole area become the screen, but either way it is an impressive upgrade--especially after they added the beautiful second screen in the corner.

As far as the ranking, who cares? The board the Cowboys have is a monstrosity and takes away from actually watching the game on the field. Heinz Field's scoreboard is just about perfect for the stadium and anything bigger than the current footprint would be overkill.

For those of you that constantly complain about Heinz Field why not just enjoy Pitt playing in an NFL facility and the fact that the scoreboard is upgraded for this season.

The Steelers likely limit that sharply now due to their baffling insistence on grass rather than the field turf it always should have been.

I'm not sure why so many people are so baffled that the Stillers have a grass field because the Stiller players, almost unanimously, have said that they would rather play on grass than turf. The day that a large percentage of Stiller players express a preference for turf is the day that plans to put turf in at Heinz Field will begin. It won't begin a day sooner though, and it surely shouldn't surprise anyone if that day never comes.

We told our boss the new cubicles are noisy. He tells people his employees love the collaborative environment.

From where I sit, the vantage is mostly good but there is one particular point in the field its very hard to see the action. So i appreciate a bigger screen with higher res for plays that happen there. Maybe for controversial relays too (when they allow to be showed). Otherwise I actually refer to the sideline message area more, which is directly across my line of sight to the field) mostly to check the game clock. Obviously not as possible if i had end zone seats. Those folks may appreciate the new one just for this.

Either way I don't pay much attention to the main scoreboard. The PR clips and graphics and such, not a big deal to me. In between most plays i'm more likely to be babbling (griping) with my buddies and annoying my neighbors. Kind of like at home.

One aspect not mentioned here so far, I. wonder if the sound system is impacted by these changes? Will the terrible canned music (defined as any music I don't like) blast even louder between plays? Yeesh.

That's a great point. Or at least it would be if there weren't direct quotes from actual Stillers players talking about how they prefer grass to turf.

Oops.

I was going to ask about this. in this day and age with turf, it's really a no brainer to go that way. 20 years ago when they were playing on green concrete at 3 rivers, I get but the days of wearing high top basketball shoes on turf are over, this crap they make now is awesome.

Oh yes, I'm sure a pro football owner is 100% going to do exactly what the players want because they "prefer" grass. Really shocked they won't listen to AB when he says Bell should get paid.

The old style turf hurt more the day after you played on it. The new stuff is wonderful. But good turf would lead to more use and that can't be tolerated.

Really a solution for one of our Pitt engineers, but presuming the chromium oxide levels in those stainless steel troughs are sufficient....they will never rust. A new stadium will be built when the Rooney's cry poor that they are not making enough from the limited luxury boxes that Heinz contains, etc., which may not be too many years away. Hail to Pitt!

The "Steelers hate Pitt" or "Steelers never draft Pitt players" is just complete BS. Who are the Pitt players the Steelers passed on, who they could have drafted and proved to be quality draft picks? Shady, a year after they took a 1st round RB? Anyone else? Baldwin, Otah, Fitzgerald, and Revis were all gone before they picked. Obviously the 1st 2 were terrible picks.

Absolute insanity.

Sheard would have been nice in our 3-4, not sure if we passed on him. steelers threw a lot of bones for some of these pitt guys who were hangin on by a thread. My man palko was on that team, PIstol Pete for a few years, we had the safety, Jenkins play for the steelers in late 90s for a week or two. Poteat. I mean these aren't exactly all pro type players who had a lot of offers in the professional ranks.

Which 1st round QB did you want them to take? Taking QBs after the top 10 or so picks has unbelievably terrible odds. Even just the 1st round as a whole has a "success" rate of 50% and that counts guys like Andy Dalton, Jay Cutler, Sam Bradford, EJ Manuel, and Chad Pennington as "successful" picks. You either have a top QB or you tank for a top QB pick and hope you get it right. Otherwise, you are hoping you shatter the odds.

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2014/nfl-draft-round-round-quarterback-data

And obviously, past the odds of finding a decent QB, the Steelers have a window to win they certainly should try to maximize. Hell, it might slam shut next year.

Agreed. The Steelers probably do have greater access to Pitt players, and thus greater familiarity. But on the whole I don't think it has prohibited them from drafting Pitt guys. It has more often been about need / fit.

The notable exception was passing on Andy Lee.

The NFL players survey consistently ranked Heinz Field as either the worst or bottom three worst surfaces in the league. They haven't done it in recent years, so I'd be curious to see if opinions have changed.

cant for the life of me figure out why they don't make the change. pitt and steelers playing on it, you got high school kids beating it all to hell in November. It literally makes no sense. with how many times they re-sod the damn thing, the turf will pay itself off in 2 seasons..

They took the much, much better Cam Heyward a few picks earlier.

Well that's the thing. We all know the Rooney's are cheapskates, and yet the continue to do the more expensive thing with regards to the turf/grass argument. A sane, logical person who has heard the players talking about the subject ought to be able to figure out the reason, but apparently it's just too much for the average Pitt fan to grasp.
