One would think getting a provost from UNC would guarantee someone well versed on gaming the NCAA rules, have bag man on speed dial and have phantom classes all lined up for the incoming 5 stars.

Oval Jaynes story. Jaynes was Pitt AD from 1991-96. I don't remember the exact year — I think it was the first year of Majors II (1993 when they sold off all the bright blue and gold uniforms before the scrimmage) that I went to the spring football game at Pitt Stadium. Me and maybe 24 other Pitt lunatics. Walking on the field, I spot Jaynes and go over to talk to him, wish the program well, etc. And Jaynes shook my hand, tepidly, all the while looking over my shoulder, presumably for some high roller to pigeonhole. I could have called him an effing SOB; he never heard a word I said. When I turned away, scowling and shaking my head, he must have recognized what he had done and he gave me a weak, "Thanks."

Thanks for that link. I'd never seen that article before and really makes me appreciate what Pitt has now, except my confidence is still low for Gallagher.

installed? It was more like a coronation, remember him spending over 90K to renovate his office. I remember getting some junk mail from him after he left, supposedly in charge of the Smithsonium and was hustling for donations.
yeah I thought he was going to be good. Not only did he come from a school that likes to cheat, he was himself a jock. Thought it was a match made in heaven.
Only here do slam dunk hires like him, Wannstedt, Suzie McConnell turn out to be disasters.
what made it worse was coming off a time when we needed strong leadership after the tail end of the Posvar/Bozik era. And we got those two bozo's.

i spent 4 years on the campus of our university during the reign of O'Connor. i, and no one i know, ever saw or heard from him. ever. i have found no evidence that he actually existed.
