Slightly OT: Notre Dame should be in Coastal, Virginia underrated?

Seriously, Notre Dame in the Coastal would give them an easy path to the playoff each year, just like Clemson in the Atlantic. They lose at Georgia and are likely out. If they were in the Coastal, they could have a play-in game vs. Clemson. They would steamroll the coastal and it would guarantee a yearly Catholic vs. Convict match and would keep our history alive with them as well.

Virginia gets no love. They have two solid wins against us and FSU. They lose at Notre Dame, which is top 10. If they were VT and not UVA, they would be top 15 in rankings. We should also be at least getting a few votes for the polls and are as deserving as 2 loss A&M, minus the name brand.

Would the committee place a one loss Notre Dame over undefeated Clemson? It depends where the money lies, but I would be curious what happens if Clemson has a few more close calls (I don't think they will though).

It probably comes down to them making more money with NBC than with being a full-time ACC member (not 100%, just assuming). They’d also play Michigan, MSU, USC, Stanford, etc. a lot less.

The committee has shown that they will put Notre Dame in it they win their games, so I don’t see them joining full-time anytime soon.

the ND faithful would grab their pitchforks and torches if they were ever to join a conference like the ACC. it would be ugly and they'd take a huge hit financially, especially from alumni donations. don't bite the hand that feeds you.

they get their cake and they get to eat it too. no reason to screw that up..

you think if Clemson goes undefeated that they will be left out of the playoffs over a one loss Notre Dame team? Why would you possibly think this?

ND has everything right now as an independent. They gain nothing by joining a conference and risk losing conference championship games.

But that is my point. They are out of the playoff now. If they were in the ACC coastal they could get in with a win over Clemson this year.

pitt fans have been bringing this topic up for 15 years, dating back to big east days.. stating this silly idea that Notre Dame will have to join a conference sooner or later.

it was funny in 2004, its still funny today and in 2024, when pitt fans ask this question, it will be funny then too.

If Clemson won the remainder of their games by 1 point on a last second FG, not only would they make the CFP, they'd likely be the #1 seed.

bama plays lsu still so one of those will lose.. Georgia gets past auburn, they can easily go undefeated until the SEC game and even then, they can lose to bama and still make it... again.. annoys me when that happens but i cant argue that they don't deserve it..

Tosu looks legit as heck. they got the badgers and psu though so still a few tests.. we always do this too early and it always seems to work itself out.. lots of teams will lose a game or two and the playoffs, again, will get the 4 best teams in, like they usually do..

I don't necessarily think Notre dame is out of the playoffs just yet. they get the benefit of the doubt in the rankings. they win out, they will be in the mix..

The thing is, there's only 7 programs that can make CFP like from now on.

Clemson
Alabama
Georgia
LSU
Oklahoma
Notre Dame
Ohio State

I disagree that this would give them an easy path to the playoff. If anything, it would mean that they max out at the ACC Championship instead of losing in the first round of the playoff.

Nothing could have given them an easier route to the playoff than the schedule they played last year. That's not entirely on them, because Stanford, USC, and Florida State are not all down in the same season very often. But it was certainly the perfect storm. Their best win was in week one against a Michigan team that proved itself to be top 15-worthy but not able to hang with the top ten-caliber teams (see results against Ohio State and Florida).

That's very short-sighted. There are certainly some other teams that can catch lightning in a bottle with the right breaks (in general; not necessarily this year). Auburn, Florida State, Penn State, Michigan, Oregon, Stanford, USC, Texas, Wisconsin, Washington, Florida, etc. Some of them may be down now, but they all recruit and/or play at a level where they can sneak in every now and then (or, in some of their cases, even return to dominance in 3-5 years). It's cyclical to some degree, albeit the list still isn't very inclusive.

many more teams that can make it, that hold their destination in their own hands.. you think wiscy wins out, they aren't in? penn state? auburn? Florida? Iowa? Hell, wake forest could win out and they'd be in.. they wont but they could.

everyone has the same chance, well P5 teams anyways. they don't lose, they win and they are in.. there is only 4 spots, the 4 best get in. it's quite simple really.

Now if you are arguing that there should be more spots, that it's set up now that a loss disqualifies lots of teams and they should have the "mulligan" to make the regular season more important, well you have an argument and i and many others would agree that it should be 8 team playoffs. but that's for another thread..

I don't know why people worry about this? Pitt fans need to worry about Pitt. If Pitt takes care of itself in football, everything else will take care of itself.
