The consensus on the board is disappointment with the names being tossed around as possible targets for Pitt's new coach.

So, I'll ask, which names would you want to be on the list of possible candidates?

My list (no order):

Gregg Marshall
Kevin Keatts
Will Wade
Bryce Drew
Chris Holtmann
Danny Hurley
Chris Mack

They have all had success as a head coach.

Its one thing to have a wish list, another to have a realistic list. The lists out there are the realistic lists.

Wish list should include

Gregg Marshall
Steve Prohm
Chris Mack
Billy Kennedy
Cuonzo Martin

Yes, let me qualify my question: a wish list that is within reason. Izzo, etc. aren't coming here. So, we're looking for wish list of names that aren't total fantasy.

I understand that some of names are correct but up to two surprised candidates are in the mix. From my non Pitt basketball contacts at least scuttlebutt is picking up.

Hires I would be OK with:
Chris Mack
(Xavier) -- lots of sustained success for years, including in NCAAT, and much closer geographically than Gregg Marshall
Gregg Marshall (Wichita St) -- lots of sustained success for years, including in NCAAT
Chris Holtmann (Butler) -- Quickly bounced Butler back to success after 1 off-year when Stevens left, NCAAT success, supposedly can recruit -- hard to pin down his style since 1 year they were offensive and the other defensive
Chris Beard (Arkansas-LR) -- has engineered insanely fast and strong turnarounds at D2 and mid-major in past 3 seasons, plus he will gladly fill holes with JUCO/transfers and apparently can recruit -- teams have great D, force turnovers, take care of ball, and can shoot 3's -- unproven but he's done this at two different teams, can he recruit our area?
Andy Enfield (USC) -- turned around two programs and up-tempo system is fun and liked by players/recruits -- is from PA, but has coached in Florida or LA for 10 straight years

Not so sure:
Mike Lonergan (GW) -- sustained success at GW and Vermont, but no tourney success -- style is same-ish (D & Reb)
Dan Hurley (RI) -- he improved RI, but they've only had one good season (and it wasn't this one)
Kevin Keatts (UNC-Wilmington) -- has had success/improvement at UNC-W, but only for 2 years and in a horrible conference -- More than anything, I'd call him unproven
Will Wade (VCU) -- took over a successful mid-major and it continued as such in his 1 season there -- still rather unproven
Bryce Drew (Valparaiso) -- lots of success over 5 seasons but no tourney or over-achieving wins, strong D&Reb -- overall same style as Pitt & no big wins

I laugh Everytime somebody even mentions Gregg Marshall or Chris Mack .. Guess what .. They ain't coming here

Guess what? Like any list on a message board means anything when it comes to who will be the next coach. Next thing you know, Jay Wright will have made a Final Four.

Paul Zeise, while on the Fan earlier this Friday afternoon, suggested if it were up to him he would at least talk to Tommy Amaker. Amaker is the current head coach at Harvard and also had success at Seton Hall and Michigan as the health coach. Zeise asserted that that Amaker has since "learned" to coach while at his latest gig.

Interesting choice, imo. Personally, I love coaching hires with plenty of previous (head) coaching experience in football or basketball. In this case Amaker would qualify.

Steve Prohm makes $1.2m at Iowa State, they should offer to more than double it and add big tourney bonuses.

Well admittedly I know nothing about him. But like other candidates like Wade my question there would be how much is he responsible for their success? Weren't Hoiberg and Abdelmassih the architects there? And I know I'm being lazy - I could and maybe should google his name.

I've mentioned Prohm before on here, I like him because he had 4 good years at Murray State prior to going to ISU. Slightly more proven, IMO.

Also recruited and coached Cameron Payne as a head coach.

I don't know that he'd come here, but ISU is losing a bunch and that isn't an easy place to recruit to. There were rumors that Pollard and Hoiberg were clashing about who he was recruiting and how he was doing it, so I don't know that Prohm can just follow the Hoiberg/Abdelmassih model there.

Thanks. Yea I know there were some questions as to how/why ISU all the sudden got that good that fast. Kane going there certainly raised some eyebrows.

Thanks for the info.
