BTW, I noticed in the fan guide booklet that came with the season tickets that the St. Louis game is going to start at noon the day before Thanksgiving. I wonder if Wednesday afternoon tip off will inconvenience either of the two people planning on going.

This is what I'm talking about. These exempt events need to go away. Pitt vs Saint Louis on a weekday afternoon in NY? I honestly don't think there will be 100 fans there. Make it a 31 game season without exempt events. If teams still want to play in tournaments, fine, but they would no longer be exempt. There is some talk of this happening

Except that it’s a very common thing on Thanksgiving Week. It’s made for TV basketball and I love it.

Teams would still be allowed to play in these tournaments, they just wouldn't be exempt. The top ones would survive. The ones in hotel ballrooms in Cancun and Negril or the one at a JUCO gym in the Redneck Riviera, or the 18 Barclays Center events with nobody in the stands would go away.

Also, get this, teams could play ON CAMPUS or have meaningful neutral-site games during Thanksgiving. I remember Jamie saying something like there Pitt/Duq game over Thanksgiving was like the highest attended college basketball game of the weekend. Thats just stupid.

You do know that the game is at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. So, it won't be dependent solely on Pitt fans showing up.

Yes it will

That was downright hilarious. NOT!

Also, this game is not listed as being televised and I cant imagine that would change given the horrible time slot. NBCSN had the rights to this event in the past but that expired. Maybe Facebook Live or Twitter can stream it at least

I love these neutral games. I’ve traveled to a ton. I was really disappointed when I realized this was noon the day before Thanksgiving.

I'd be shocked if its not televised somewhere, somehow. Otherwise, why do it? Would be like not televising the pizza bowl. Its the only thing giving it value.

In NYC there are some people who go to college basketball games just for entertainment even if they are fans of neither team. Will there be a large crowd for Pitt vs St. Louis? Of course not. But, there will be very modest attendance nevertheless.

Why do it? To get the extra games. If not for that rule, do you think the 2 teams would agree to play on a weekday afternoon in an empty arena?

Predict the actual attendance:

I would say 200.

I suspect that Barclays has a quota for events to hold in a given year. They have a lot of neutral college basketball games, and many of them are not at all interesting.

If you go to the Ticketmaster web site there are seats on the sideline in the front row still available for sale. Seats in the center court sections are available in the third row. I don't know how many tickets they have sold so far, but it is very, very few.

Yea, there's no way they get 1000, probably not 500. I'll stick with 200. Definitely the most stupid exempt event we've been in. That said, its better than nothing.

There won't be more than 1-2K max.

I’ve been to events like this on both sides of the attendance equation.

Went to a neutral site Miss St vs St Mary’s game years ago that probably had less than 500 people there.

On the other hand am going to a holiday tournament at the Orleans Arena over Thanksgiving this year that features North Carolina/Michigan St/UCLA/Texas. Place seats 7,500 and will obviously be SRO.

It doesn’t really matter, these are made for tv events and the attendance is pretty much meaningless.

Correction: some of them are made for TV events. Others exist simply to create the extra games under the exemption rule. Pitt/SLU will not be televised.

That's just stupid. All the other games up to the St Louis game are televised. The other sad part is, this might be the most competitive game. All the others looked like cupcakes or what used to be cupcakes.

Part of this discussion is the location in NYC.

Wouldn't some fans from Pitt and perhaps SLU travel to NYC if on a different day during Thanksgiving?

If the game was on Monday, I would consider going and come home Wednesday

I think Pitt scheduled the game for recruiting and for NY alumni.

It’s on ACC Network Extra

It doesn't say that anywhere

If they play a weekday afternoon game in Brooklyn and don’t even televise it that would be the dumbest game ever scheduled. It’s already questionable, I can’t see this game not being televised in 2018 with all the channels out there.

It seems very unlikely to be on a linear channel. Although I'm not sure why ESPN wouldn't buy the rights to it and throw it on ESPN3 (which is a streaming channel on your TV if you Comcast)

Neither the Pitt or SLU lists the game as being televised. Also, it is not a Pitt home game, so it cannot technically be branded as "ACC Network Extra" though it could be shown as an ESPN3 game.
