Sun bowl should be listed as exhibition

Should be treated as the first day of spring practice i.e. It doesnt mean sh*t
feel like asking all seniors to not play is a bit much. but play the starters and quickly rotate the younger guys in. almost like an NFL pre season (3rd pre-season) game. where you start the players and let them get a couple of drives in and by 2nd quarter, it's mostly backups in.

Thus is a freaking joke. Cancey out alexander out. Hill out dennis out. Freaking slovis gone . This lineup is a shadow of the team that crushed the U and if we lose you jackasses will be gloating about duzz being mediocre. Two words. Bite me! Ps i am not blaming the players so forget that angle
It’s funny when a poster acting like a jackass is calling others jackasses in his post.

Still no word on UCLA opt outs. If even one of DTR or Charbonnet chooses to play, they’re gonna have an absolute feast on our 2nd string defense.
The bigger question is who important is not opting out.
Like legitimately.

Are we going to have any defensive starters?

I understand Pitt (and most teams) with opt outs, but just remains odd yet somehow apropos that UCLA doesn’t seem to have any…

So we're down Hill, Izzy, Dennis, Kancey, Houy, Warren, Alexandre, Morgan, Slovis, maybe Wayne, probably Baldonado, Tallandier and Wright (depth guys), and probably a few more I'm forgetting or who haven't announced yet.

Sounds like must-see TV to me. We're about one step away from suiting up the volleyball team, letting Geena Davis play QB, letting Madonna play Safety, and hiring Tom Hanks to call the plays.

But the problem is it counts in the W-L column. Total joke and I'd wish we didn't have so many players opting out but oh well. H2P

They aren’t exhibitions. They are really as meaningful as any regular season game when it comes to W-L and rankings.

They aren’t exhibitions until the NCAA rules them as such (which they should do).

The interior DL will be fine. The scheme will always be there. If George can go we’ll be getting a good look at next spring’s two deep sans portal guys like McMillon.

These bowl games started to become more and more meaningless about 2-3 years ago. Now they are a joke. It will be interesting to see what happens moving forward. Either they go away totally, or they figure out how to incentivize these players to play.

A lot of these bowls will be going the way if the dinosaur once the expanded playoffs get rolling. Their tv value will drop significantly. Oddly, the Sun Bowl might survive.

BLAME THE QUITTERS :)

But in all seriousness, how is UCLA's opt out situation for this game?

I think it’s time we rip the band-aid off and just scrap most of these bowls. If you aren’t going to the playoff, season over. I think we might get to that point if it continues to expand and every conference has direct access.

How about the bowl sponsors offer up prize money? But how much would it take?

Right now, there's like 40 bowls right? Make the playoffs 24 or 32, so that a decent amount of teams have a legit shot at a post season.

Who cares about the w-l record at this point?
I do, I'd like to see "9", every number more I like. I'm old school, not like the crowd that thinks 0-17 is better than losing the Super Bowl, because only a championship matters and anything less sucks.

Does UCLA have any opt outs at this point? I haven’t heard any… figured we would as practices get going.

Same could be said about all but a very small handful of bowl games at this point.

After the playoff expansion kicks in, all of these minor bowls will disappear.

Or you end up seeing more bad teams in bowls like 5-7 Rice.

UCLA is probably, smartly, not announcing opt outs. Its actually kind of stupid to announce them. Why would you? It limits tickets sales and gives an advantage to the other team's preparation.

That said, unless its a NY6 bowl, these are all exhibition games. I would have no more interest in the game if everyone is playing. The season is over and this is just a fun bonus exhibition game

Agreed. 24 teams making it out of 131 would be about 18%, or the same percentage that makes the NCAA basketball tournament. Give every conference champion an AQ bid and fill the remaining spots with the best at-large teams.

Still not so sure? TV Networks need the programming.

Exactly, and who cares if some of the AQs have no chance to win in the tournament? That's how it is in basketball for the most part. And it gives fans something to stay excited about until the end. Think about the lesser D1 basketball leagues, the championship game that gets them into the Big Dance is like the Super Bowl to them, they don't care that they'll probably get steamrolled the next week, they just want to go there and try.

Isn’t it more the players announcing their opt-outs, not the schools.

Every body cares. 8-5 stinks next to 9-4. Duzz is mediocre sounds credible when you recite 8-5 .No i would rather not play then field a team that is put together with bailing wire
And last year 12-2 would have sounded a lot better than 11-3, not to mention jumping them up a number of places in the final rankings.

Yeah, it all sounds better, particularly in a few years when everyone’s looking back and making reference to records and rankings of past teams, but in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter or impact much going forward.

Anybody that cares is purely driven by their own ego and bragging rights. No rational adult should care.

Why does it matter? How is your life impacted?

Well if you're not going to blame the players and you're not going to blame the coaches, there's not many excuses left. Let me see... we can blame the fans....or possibly the NCAA....let's throw in the alignment of the stars and global warming. Excuses are for losers. Play the game with the players you have and accept the consequences. If not, then don't accept a bowl invitation at all.
