Sy update

Lmao.. Where? By some Obscure Beat Journalist out of 100s??

Neither are Projected in any Mock Drafts I’ve Looked At.. They are Not NBA Players.. You need to Lay Off the Capel Cologne you wear to bed every night..

I did see Johnson as a 2nd rounder on one of the mock drafts, of course that same guy also had LaMelo Ball as a 1st round pick.

DePaul, Illinois, SHU a few years ago, PSU a few years ago. Kids don't care about this.

Totally agree on this, I've been back-and-forth on this sentiment, but it's factual. Relationships (and maybe behind the scenes stuff matter) are key in basketball recruiting. Still have hopeful optimism for 2019 and especially for 2020. I see recruits keep talking about vision and what Capel/Pitt is building, which is what they need to hammer home.

@NCanton Panther Some recruits maybe used to prefer the big boy league, but it is true, that it's not a huge factor, at times, anymore. But I still would hope Capel can sell the ACC over the AAC though. But some Big East teams are leaps and bounds ahead of Pitt at the moment unfortunately.

If you count those 2 guys as NBA guys you could count hundreds of others across the country. If they are truly NBA players this should be an NCAA tournament team or very close to it next season.
That's not how it works really. Being future NBA players and actually being an NBA player is two different things.
And the rest of the team matters as well.
And these kids got tons of things they need to work on.

DM me, put some money up.
I love your new handle.
You're the best.

How would you grade such a bet though? I would think they would have to play in an actual game to be counted as such. Artis is an NBA player in my book, Michael Young is not.

I'd grade it as make a roster.
And be on the team.
That means they made it. That's how that works.

X needs to improve his all around game
Trey needs to improve his shot tremendously
It’s doable , but a lot of work needs to be done .

Recruiting definitely needs to pick up if this is going to be a consistent middle of the pack ACC team, but the program is in much better shape now than it was a year ago at this time.

You just reinforced exactly what I said. Your first sentence, kids picking or having a preference for the ACC for a reason other than the conference itself. And the rest of it not related to the conference or unique to the ACC conference.

Bottom line, we have no significant recruiting advantage against most schools we compete against for recruits because of the ACC. Back when we were in the BE there was definitely more of a recruiting advantage associated with being in that conference.
The Hc is supposed to be the recruiting advantage!

No one said Oats would not be good. He can talk a game. I would rather have Capel than Oats. Oats is a cocky little guy, can we see what he does up a level.

We don't have to see. He is going to have Alabama at the 2 seed/3 seed level in a couple years. He has THAT personality.

If some of you guys don't like Capel as a coach who else do you want to coach the team because Pitt is not paying 7 or 8 Mill to a coach.

I wouldn't trade Capel for anyone that we can realistically get. But let's say Miller or Wade get a Show Cause that expires in a few years. I would so hire either one of them if Capel leaves in 5-6 years.

I don't see that. Maybe 6-7 seed, but I highly doubt 2-3 seed. 2-3 seed is reserved for UNC, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, Mich St, Gonzaga, etc,........you are overselling him big time!

But honestly, doesn't Capel have that personality. Look at what he was able to accomplish last year in such short time. He has a great rep, was lead recruiter for Duke. Duke's recruiting really accelerated with him on the staff.
So what has happened this year is confounding at best, disappointing at its most realistic and frightening at worst. Anyone saying they aren't disappointed with this class is flat out lying. Saying you are disappointed is not saying Capel should be fired or it was a bad hire, but simply we all expected a significant uptick in recruiting, and to be honest, we are losing almost every battle.

So instead of trying to figure out how to spin this as positive, just for once, be realistic and honest.

I thought so but Capel strikes me as more of a straight-laced wise old father figure. These guys gravitate to guys who will go to the Strip Club with them: Wade, Oats, Pearl, Crean....those types of dudes.

I'll be realistic and honest. Capel is trying to recruit kids that have been recruited by other programs for 2 more years. And trying to sell a program that has been in the dumpster that whole time. He's had some good kids down to 2 or 3 schools and has lost out to schools with much better recent history.

I'll start worrying about Capel if he strikes out against all the kids he's offered for 2020. He will have been recruiting them for 2 years and should have a much better chance. But the team has to show some more improvement in the meantime to make the sale a bit easier.

I clearly remember the mood on this board while we endured the second year of Stallings. The consensus was no matter who we brought in as coach it was going to be a 4 or 5 year rebuild. Now the grousing is starting about the coach because he doesn't have us back in 13 months.

You think the average top 100 basketball recruit is interested in going to strip clubs with impotent nerds like Will Wade and Nate Oats? LOL, where do you get these strange ideas?

Yes. Because.......Gary McGhee.
Gary became quite a player before his time at Pitt was over.He had talent but he made himself a better player. And he also had someone like Blair to practice against to make him better. We don’t have anyone quite that good to make Brown a better player. They are also two different style players with different skill sets.

I don’t see it either. Thinking SMF is way overestimating Oats here.

Capel's cool as f#$k, met him 4 times, he's definitely got swag, and he ain't the most straight laced guy, he's got old fashioned style values, but he enjoys a good time.
And he's been here a year you weirdos.
But being cool has little to no bearing on recruits, that can be shown with a plethora examples.

It was a joke so of course they aren't actually going to strip clubs with their HC's but what I was trying to convey is these kids are looking for cool, hip coaches. Guys like Wade, Oats, Crean.

You think Will Wade, Nate Oats and Tom Crean are cool and/or hip?

And you think that mostly urban 18 year olds agree?

Really?

But so is Oats, Crean, Hurley and how many other coaches who have recently taken over programs? And not so good of ones either. Again, it is okay to admit some disappointment with this class. Because it is just that, disappointing.

One other thing about this Sy update. We knock the SEC for their fans not really taking basketball seriously but how about friggin Ole Miss having a site doing a podcast spending 10 minutes or so on the recruitment of 1 player, even bringing in a recruiting analyst from LSU to discuss just that player. I am not sure I have ever heard of any Pitt podcast doing something like that.

Of course he is overselling him. He didn't come to Pitt so the troll tells us he is the next greatest Coach in history. What a surprise NOT.

You have had 5 different screen names and literally reply ONLY to my posts. That is the definition of being a troll. I gotta give it to you. You are committed to your stalking.

I once saw Stallings at Cheerleaders with a group of Pitt recruits. They were having a great time. Until Coach Kev dozed off.
