The MLS officially announced it will add 3 expansion teams to get to 30. Sacramento and St. Louis will most likely get a team. Charlotte, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Detroit figure to fight to be Team #30.

So, yes, David Tepper will possibly be making huge investments into Panthers Football, MLS, and a new stadium (MLS) with none of that being related to our Panthers.

Just read about Joe Tsai who owns the nets. He gave 2 massive donations in consecutive months to Yale for program and facility improvements.

If I ever have 10 billions dollars I promise I’ll give 1 billion of that to Pitt athletics

GASP!

How dare he!!!

I think the guy has proven he's a Pitt sports fan, and an earnest sports owner who wants winners.

And I give Pitt the credit that it likely solicits him actively. We've seen the likes of Gallagher and Lyke schmoozing him at ACC events.

So rather than think he inexplicably is being stingy with Pitt sports donations, i think it is more logical to conclude that Pitt's administration isn't willing or comfortable to give him the type of influence a typical college sports large money donor is given at other schools. I.e. going all in on winning, using the money.

"Will I see 5 star football and basketball recruits for my money?"

"No, but you'll get earnest and warm hearted thank you notes from our new Lacrosse team."

he has some nerve using his money for his own purposes. I mean, yeah he's donated over 7 figures to pitt but forget that, we deserve more of his money. I mean he's rich, its our right..

The MLS team will play in the stadium he uses for football and that investment will be full of partners. Truthfully, he's the richest single owner in the NFL and anything that makes him richer should be embraced by anyone that thinks he "owes" it to Pitt.

I didn't recommend anything to him. To the pansies in the Cathedral? Well, sure I am. But Tepper doesn't need ME to instruct him on how major college sports works.

Hell, he shows it himself, he's a classic billionaire sports nut who wants to amuse himself facilitating winning teams. Probably has been eager to throw money at our programs, but not to build lockers and daffodil planters around the soccer field.

you think PItt is telling him that they'll accept his donation but he will have no say in where it goes? AD put money directly to football in the championship fund. Why would they put such stipulations on AD and not Tepper?

Im willing to bet if Tepper wanted money donated to pitt hoops exclusively, they'd take it. Rumor is he helped out with stalling buy out (no clue if its true). A rich person wants money to go specifically to hoops or football, pitt will take it and place it accordingly.

I wonder if the MLS team will use tarps?

And a Tepper donation to Pitt football won't do much for the football program unless it is a capital level investment, which means stadium. Any other investment just turns into budget relief for the other sports programs and/or the Pitt's subsidy.

this guy seems to be a bigger hoops fan than pitt football fan. he's already endowed s scholly for hoops, which is pretty big.

No they wont and the MLS would never allow a fringe soccer market like Charlotte to play in a 75K seat stadium, tarps or no tarps. Tepper has stated he is looking into a Soccer-specific stadium, potentially a few miles down the street in South Carolina, which has 0 major pro sports teams.

I hope someone from Pittsburgh has contacted Mark Cuban about investing in an MLS team/stadium. MLS is going to continue to grow. Alexi Lalas recently said they wont stop at 30 and I have said the league will eventually have 40. At some point, Pittsburgh is going to have to do something.

A guy like Cuban could build a $300 million stadium for Pitt/MLS, count it as a donation, get $100 million back in tax benefits and have a "free stadium" for MLS. These other privately financed MLS stadiums dont have the luxury of being tabbed as donations to a college program.

I love the location of Highmark stadium, with the open end facing river and city. Obviously much too small for a major soccer team. Carson street and that mountain and the bridge and station square kind of prohibit making it bigger.

It would be cool if you could just build "up" and on the ends too and make that facility bigtime. Not an engineer of course so probably impossible to do and that doesn't even include parking..

a facility on the river, do some tailgating on a boat, make a little walkway over the tracks so people can come in from the water. have walkway access from the heritage trail for pedestrians to walk from station square bars pre game.. Im not even a soccer fan but i'd go down for that..

got to maximize the waterfront property here folks, drinking outside, sports and looking at water, it's a menage a trois of entertainment..

The Panthers have launched several exploratory projects over the last two months regarding a possible MLS expansion. The team held a meeting in Charlotte last month to gauge public interest in a team, and sent a survey to season ticket holders about a potential team name.

The survey also suggested that Bank of America Stadium could feature “a more intimate soccer configuration to create an exciting game-day atmosphere for MLS home matches.” A stadium plan, along with other criteria such as corporate sponsorship commitments, is a requirement the MLS has for all bidding groups.

Tepper has also discussed the renovated stadium as the home field of a Charlotte MLS team.

I know other sites have been mentioned but I'm not sure why Tepper would bother with any lower expectations than what Atlanta is doing with their club.

Isn't there a Pitt football helmet (God only knows which variation of the approx 17 or so of the past decade) on his desk?
yes, good point.. I know the pic you are referring to..

It be like that sometimes.
perfect spot for a pantherlair get together If you ask me.. I think we should meet there on his roof for drinks, not tell him, it will be a surprise. Odds are he either loves the surprise and buys the booze or has us shot on site for trespassing..

im willing to roll the dice..

He is trying to develop around the stadium in Charlotte and this is one of the ways in addition he is trying to get an indoor facility for the NFL panthers I was surprised that they don't have an indoor practice facility.

The problem for Pitt is that Tepper sees his NFL team and the potential MLS teams as his projects, instead of the Pitt football program.

And I guarantee you Charlotte will not get an MLS franchise without a soccer-specific stadium or a brand new palace like Atlanta with downsizing technology. MLS spots are much too coveted for MLS to take a chance on placing a team in a 75K seat oldish (yea, it kinda is now) stadium.

My guess on Team #30 is Detroit.

Tarps are magical according to this board. I don't see the issue.

Detroit isn’t building a soccer stadium, their plan is to downsize Ford Field. Also there isn’t enough corporate money and disposal income in the region to support a 5th pro team, it’s the same reason Pittsburgh will never get a 4th pro team.

OK. No team for them then. Phoenix, Las Vegas, or Charlotte then.

As for Detroit......look at Minneapolis with 5 teams

The prevailing feeling in Las Vegas is that they will not be part of this round of expansion.

Well if Detroit and Charlotte aren't building stadiums, I could see the MLS going for the Raiders' new stadium if it could have the same type of downsizing technology as Atlanta. Atlanta also built the stadium to allow the lower sideline seats to be rolled back to account for the wider soccer field.
