The Herm is it at ASU

yeah, and mighty Chip Kelly finished his NFL stint at 2-14 and folks were beating down his door to come back to college. I seem to remember Nick Saban tearing it up in the NFL also. Past NFL performance is not a good indicator of college success.

No, the 'why' comes from no way in hell anyone knows if he can do the job or not...I'd rather send a stud linebacker son to play for Herm Edwards than Todd Graham any day of the week.. How bout you?

If you don't understand the difference between guys who were good college coaches who failed in the NFL going back to college and a guy who failed in the NFL who has never been a college head coach and hasn't coached anywhere at all in years then maybe it's time to back away from the keyboard.

He was below average in the pros and hasn’t coached in ages.
Yeah, that's why I said it was surprising and unexpected. My only point is you just never know. If he surrounds himself with good recruiters and position coaches it could work. Or it could be a disaster. Good thing is he gets to follow the fraud.

Edwards actually wasn't bad with the Jets, making the playoffs 3 times in 5 years. He should have beaten the Steelers in 2004, but his kicker imploded in the game. He took KC to the playoffs his first year, but the last 2 years were very bad.

I could honestly care less who they hired. The satisfaction I got out of reading that Fraud was fired was enough for me. Hammer down, left lane, Penny we got to find a new home!!!!!

He gets $12m and can double dip, if he wants. He isn't hurting.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Edwards notorious for almost never attempting to even try to get a first down if it was 3rd and long? I.e. he’d just run the ball to make it 4th and six and then punt it?

If that’s the case, good luck trying to get that to translate to the college game. Especially after following what Todd Graham was trying to do

I heard Herm interviewed on Danny Kanell's show on XM radio today. I need to preface this by saying I like Herm, but he sounded way off base with just about every question asked. He was rambling on about the fact (to him, anyway) that, "It doesn't matter how assistant coaches get to a program, if they're football coaches, they're football coaches." I still haven't figured out what he meant by that one.

The interview continued that way. I can only sum it up by the statement he made when asked about his knowledge of the college game. He said he watches a lot of college football. WTF?

He also talked about his experiences with coaching the Under Armour HS All Star game. So, he has that going for him........

His relationship with the AD was one reason he chose to interview with ASU, and not for other college jobs over the years.

It will be an interesting one to follow. I wish him well, but I can't see this ending well for anyone involved.

With that size ego? He's smarting for sure.

He stepped on the heads of everyone to move on and up, and was completely classless. I'm sure that he felt he was either destined for the NFL or at least to be a highly successful college coach with a coaching tree. Oh yeah, this stings.

I heard the same interview. Agree with this completely. During the interview I was very surprised with his answers. He is not going to work in the college game, at this stage of the game. But his former agent/friend will probably give him plenty of rope.

I bet this is one of those situations where he ends up getting an extension and then fired 3 months later.

Herm will bomb at ASU. He simply will not adjust to the pace and talent differential in college football.

"For perspective, the last time Edwards was a coach at the collegiate level, Urban Meyer was the quarterbacks/wide receivers coach at Illinois State and Nick Saban was the defensive backs coach of the Houston Oilers; Lincoln Riley, one of the four 2017 playoff head coaches, was a first-grader; Bo Schembechler was in his last season as the head coach at Michigan; and there were a total of 18 bowl games (there are now 174)."

I like Herm and love his rants, but he is clearly missing a few cards in the deck.

This should be interesting.

"Phil Bennett leaves Arizona State staff

The plan for success at Arizona State under AD Ray Anderson was to remove head coach Todd Graham and while keeping everything else the same — just with a head coach that was… better. And as we know, that head coach turned out to be Herm Edwards.

But not a week into his tenure, Edwards has already hit his first crossroads.

The Sun Devils announced Tuesday that defensive coordinator Phil Bennett has left the staff over family matters.

The statement from Edwards:

“While I would have liked for Defensive Coordinator Phil Bennett to remain on the coaching staff, I do appreciate the fact that he has chosen not to stay based upon family reasons,” said Edwards. “Family always comes first and right now he needs to turn his attention to that. My top priorities right now going forward are to solidify our recruiting class and to assemble a defensive coaching staff. Both objectives are moving along quite well.”

The question now will be who Edwards turns to as Bennett’s replacement. As we know, the new Devils coach has not coached in a decade and not coached in college in nearly three.

So this hire will be anyone’s guess."
