The Pete/facilities

Maybe I'm crazy but I think you can put a team together of top 150-300 kids, develop them, and be competitive with a team of upperclassmen. Top half of the ACC and make occasional runs in the NCAAT.
Unfortunately, I disagree with your sentiment to begin with. You’re not gonna enough of them to stick around in this day and age.

Also, the kids 150-300 are being courted by multiple AAU programs and being told by multiple trainers they’re a pro as well. The culture is beyond repair.

I know you did - was busting your balls. No bigger suckers for gimmicks than us golfers. I’ve been guilty of a silly purchase or 2.
im like 1 - 20 with online buys this pandemic. from shorts to sunglasses, a wood splitter that never showed, some wire that you can cut branches down, neon corner lights for basement. i did buy a new driver off of "rockbottomgolf" that showed up and im slowly getting under control so that could be a good online purchase but im def a sucker for these online scams..

I'm sure Pitt, in general, has above average facilities. They added a bunch of amenities that were outlined previously, but that doesn't mean it's ACC quality. That's the point some are missing. You have to go above and beyond with some of this stuff.

you can find a nice beach house that's clean, updated, pool, hot tub, etc.

for the same price, you could also live in a bigger beach house, top of the line appliances, infinity pool, water fall hot tub, etc.

nothing is wrong with the first beach house. I'm sure most would find the first one to be very nice and enjoyable, but it doesn't compare to the second one.

I don't think anyone is saying the Pete is outdated or needs a ton of work, it's just not over the top like most ACC schools. You have to be over the top and think outside the box.

I kept telling people this and no one believed me, but when Dixon was here and as Capel pointed out when he got here our facilities (besides what you see on gameday) sucked. The weight room was small and cramped, the locker room and the practice gym were outdated and everywhere u walked it looked like a utility closet. Almost all of that has changed. Can I finally be vindicated now that our HC as pointed this out TWICE!

If you're trying to sell house A, you don't tell the buyer about house B while they're visiting. You're either updating house A or you aren't. Tell the person who can get the updates done, and don't waste your time selling house A to someone who wants house B.. while telling them about all the things the other house has that you want to get. Find someone who will be happy with house A or you are wasting time just getting into top 5s and 3s.

There are dozens of examples of what makes schools unique in the facilities arms race. UVA has fully enclosed nap pods with Bluetooth speakers for example. The point is to try and give these guys every reason to stay in the facility as much as possible where they can get better at hoops and have all of their academic support.

Gone are the days of the hard working prospects liking the utilitarian nature of the Petersen Events Center and future NBA guys setting up air mattresses in the locker room. Bells and whistles need to be constantly updated.
I absolutely refuse to believe we have lost 1 recruit due to facilities.

why are you against an arms race? Why cant Pitt just keep up with facilities? It’s pretty simple

I'm not against updating facilities.

Here's what I see

Nobody: We need nap pods
Coach: I know we don't have nap pods here but I'm leading the charge to get them.

Nobody: I don't want to share a practice court with the girls
Coach: I know you don't want to share a practice court with the girls team but I'm leading the charge to get our own court

Nobody: I want to have a private chef and a coffee bar
Coach: We don't have private chefs and coffee bars, but I'm leading the charge to get them.

My thoughts: coach should go to the AD and get some updates planned - then pitch those updates.

The Penn State facility , while only being a few years older than the Pete , was ranked very low by some basketball writer. Too cavernous and out dated etc. only Northwestern and Rutgers were ranked lower in terms of all Big 10 hoops arenas. They did get high praise for the aesthetics of the upper level TARPS.

Hell, why didn't Capel think of that?

I took a tour of the BJC right after construction was completed. It felt dull, lifeless, and outdated then. I'm sure it has been improved upon but you can only do so much with the layout (felt like any generic 70's/80's arena). Then again, it was built for commencement, concerts, etc... PSU basketball was not the priority when it was designed/built.

The BJC was built in that old 1970s/1980s plain jane hockey arena model (but weirdly there is no ice). There's nothing too it and its far too big.

I’ve always heard that they specified that the BJC floor needed to be built to have enough space to fit eight wrestling mats so that they could host NCAA wrestling championships. Which makes the whole thing feel super empty and cavernous.

It always amazes me that the BJC and the Pete were both built within a few years of each other, both with state funding, and for large university tenants. If you walked into both arenas, you’d think that the BJC was 30 years older than the Pete.

Indeed. I used to go to Sixers games as a kid and the interior of the BJC definitely resembled the Spectrum to me.

I doubt they built it a hockey-sized arena so they can host 1 NCAA Wrestling Championship per decade. I'm not sure what the purpose was to build a hockey arena without ice for a basketball team but it has to go down as one of the all-time blunders in arena building.

I don’t think you realize how much they like wrestling up there. They would absolutely do that.

This has to be frustrating as hell for coaches and athletic directors. You dump a bunch of money into facility upgrades only to see them outdated in a year or two by one of your competing schools and then you’re back to the drawing board.

He took the damn job knowing all this

Nobody is THAT stupid. To my knowledge, they've never even hosted the championships. They didnt build a hockey arena without ice so they can host wrestling once in a generation.

They hosted it in 1999, a few years after it was built. By the early 2000’s, the NCAA started to exclusively select professional arenas to host championships, but that was obviously about ten years after they built the BJC.

Edit: this article also states verbatim that one of the specifications for the BJC’s construction was that it be able to accommodate eight wrestling mats to host NCAA championships: https://www.pennlive.com/sports/2017/03/jordan_center_renovation_penn.html

I still refuse to believe that anyone is stupid enough to build an arena to host a wrestling tournament once a generation. That is next-level stupid.

Do you think we ever *got* recruits in the first 10 years because the building/atmosphere was special?

I believe that we did.

So if that regresses to the mean, it means that we likely didn’t have that working for us anymore

So it’s semantics - I doubt a kid ever said “nah, this place sucks”. But I think the wow factor that drew someone early on isn’t quite as strong. And it’s all relative to what others have - the Pete to me is nicer today with the upgrades.

dont remember the need to take a nap when i was in college. mid day, when you are 20 or 21, never needed a nap.
You must have been a commuter. I had morning classes and scheduled the labs in the evenings. A nice block in the middle of the day to get homework done and take a snooze.

I am laughing at the nap pods though. I would imagine that it looks like one of those suspended animation thingies in the Alien movies. When I sleep...I like a large bed that I can sprawl out and relax. Maybe Pitt needs to be different and create a large, dark rooms and looks like a caves and stuff it with two side-by-side king size pillow tops. Make sure it can fit someone 8 feet tall comfortably. Twenty five speakers built into the walls playing the waterfall sounds....or whatever these kids listen to for relaxation.

They have two nap pods that are sound proof on the outside and huge with built in bluetooth speakers to be able to listen to whatever you want as loud as you want. Then there are two giant sized bunk beds in this relaxation room as well. Has to be king sized but also longer. Whatever that’s called. It’s a neat place for them to catch an hour or two before workouts, practice, in between classes, whatever that keeps them in the facility.
