Shocking few openings

UConn - got our guy
Memphis - hired HS coach, no affect on market
Louisville/Xavier - possible
Mississippi - hired guy we weren't looking at
Georgia -hired a guy we were looking at

I mean its not often, almost unheard of for the 2 hottest mid-major coaches to NOT be lured away. Musselman and Oats are just sitting there saying "pay me."

This is why when we were discussing the possibility of Stallings being fired I said you probably would best be served to do it this year, because of just that. Few major jobs would be opening.

Now in hindsight, maybe if there were more openings, there would be more movement. Cause right now seems like alot of inertia in a coaching market that is usually fairly fluid.

This was a key in the thought process. People like @hoopsguy72 who wanted desperately for Stallings to stay, of course theorized that this year would be chock full of job openings because of the FBI investigation, but, of course, those are unlikely to come up until next year or the year after.

Heather Lyke still was clearly unprepared and is floundering. It is actually hilarious she had a vacation scheduled, like she expected this to be easily wrapped up by now, even though we have completely screwed everything up. She has either gotten completely played or she was more unprepared for this than any AD in history, and that includes Smiley.

No one is saying that. It may be that the best coach for the future is a 3rd assistant. Not all 3rd assistants are equal.

Some have vision. Some only see an inch in front of their face.

I would think this would be the time for Scheyer to become the #1 assistant at a major school or perhaps a head coach at a very low D1 school. There is simply no way he should be considered for a head job at an ACC school.

Oats could regret his decision. A year is a long time.... lot of crap can happen outside of his control that takes the shine off his star leaving his candidacy less appealing.

I think some of these coaches are playing the waiting game and people are pinning to much of that on Lyke. Hurley didn't want it. Any up and comer would take the X job over Pitt right now. Hell they may want the Nevada job over us right now should that open up, we've been flushed that far down the toilet. They are waiting it out to see what comes of it. Doesn't matter how much money Lyke is throwing at them. This is why Oats, Muss, Matta, etc have not signed yet.

Our best hope is a flyer on someone who isn't in that high of demand and clearly has Pitt as their best offer. Hope they pan out. Coaching here in the ACC in that arena with cash backing from the athletic department for assistants are positive sells. But the problem is that where we stand as a program right this second could not possibly be worse. You are walking into either no roster at all or a roster with players who were only good enough to win 8 games and go 0-19 in the conference. And you've got to try to win in the toughest conference in the country that pumps out NBA talent year after year. We are 3 years minimum from even the NIT.

You're getting your wish when whoever coaches this team next year isn't named Kevin Stallings. But there is a long, long way to go for whoever gets put in charge.

Even a bottom feeder ACC school?

I could be wrong, but I don’t ever remember a P6 school hiring a 3rd assistant with almost no experience.

Probably not a mid major either, stuff like that just doesn’t happen.

If he would’ve been hired by Duquesne last year I’m pretty sure people would’ve been surprised they took that kind of chance.

I remember people saying that and thinking that can't play into it because surely there has to be a lot of jobs that come open. But there haven't been. I cant say I follow this closely but this has to be very rare. I mean guys like Nate Oats and Ron Musselman aren't even getting interviews simply because there's no openings.

Just because there aren't many openings doesn't mean its a good year to be looking for a coach.

The actual pool of high quality candidates is massively thin. Really only 1 Super obvious one in Hurley, a couple other flavor of the month names in Oats and Mussleman, but really just not a deep pool.
