Back and forth all game long.... Irish down by 6 with under 5 minutes to go, but driving.

One of the better games this season. Notre Dame is absolutely killing themselves though in the red zone with all the field goals they've had to settle for.

Poor clock management by Stanford. Once ND got inside the 10 with 2 minutes to go, Stanford shouldve used their timeouts to preserve time in case ND scores. Now ND has first and goal at the 2 with 35 seconds left, and if they score, Stanford won't have enough time.

Stanford now has 30 seconds and 3 TOs to get into FG range.

Probably helps Stanford that they gave him that as they have more time on the clock now. But I think this weekend the NCAA decided the 1 yard line is good enough for touchdowns.

That's like the 10th lead change in this game.......

But I maintain that Stanford screwed up by holding on to their 3 timeouts. Once ND got inside the 10, they had to think of the contingency that they might need to score.

Also... when Stanford got the touchdown to take the lead early in the quarter, they should've gone for 2 to make it a 7-point game instead of kicking and making it 6. That was a mistake.

Stanford coach will get grilled about not going for 2 up 5 in the 4th qtr
That and letting ND run the clock down from 2 minutes to 30 seconds once they got inside the 10. He needed to preserve those seconds with his TOs.

Yep. Blown call on Notre Dame TD actually ended up helping Stanford.

Eh I wouldn't have called timeout either, getting a touchdown was no guarantee for Notre Dame (of course the player didn't score and the refs screwed up again)

Personally I think Gus Johnson is making this great game even better.

Even if they dont score... Stanford could kneel down and run out the clock in that case.

But they shouldve preserved seconds on the contingency that ND scored. If ND failed to score, no big deal..... take 3 knees.

Great f-ing game.

ND playoff hopes over. They'll be in the Peach bowl against FSU.

Speaking of FSU, playing Florida right now. I knew this was coming all week. Florida is the weakest 10 win team I've ever seen. Alabama will murder them, they're in the playoffs. I think it's set now... Clemson (if beats UNC), Big Ten Champ, Alabama (if beats Florida), and Oklahoma.

The best part of ND playing FSU in the Peach? It doesnt cost the ACC any bowl slots. FSU going to the Peach fills the ACC slot and ND gets the "at large" slot. The only thing that can mess that all up is if UNC beats Clemson next week.

As I said on the other board, it's fortunate for Stanford that they were the home team, or the officials: (1) never would've called the (obvious) face mask against ND, and (2) they would've flagged Stanford for holding (or some other phantom call) a least three times to keep them out of FG range.

The facemask hurt and then ND went back in some deep prevent the next play like Stanford needed a td to win instead of a fg.

They were ACC refs.

I think they jump an idle tOSU. They would have the year's best win in having beaten #1 on a neutral field, gone 9-0 in conference play and won 12 straight. Oh, and won their conference.

No, it wasn't, for exactly the reason you saw. If Stanford goes for two and misses it then they are ahead by 5. Then when ND scores they go for two. If they make it you are down three instead of one, and your last second field goal only times the game.

People always look at these decisions based on the best case scenarios playing out for their team afterwards. And that's not the right way to look at it. Tonight's game is EXACTLY why you wait to go for two for as long as you can, because you don't know what else might happen in the game. If there was only two or three minutes left in the game then sure, you go for two. Because there isn't much time left for other things to happen. But when there is still a lot of time left you just can't assume that no one is going to score anymore, or that there is only going to be one more score in the game. People who make their decisions based on the best case scenario playing out afterwards usually find that they've made the wrong decision.
