This Peterman situation is too forced for my liking.

Not seeing the results through 4 games to justify the decision. If not for a decent 2nd half at Iowa its been pretty bad in fact. The receivers outside of Boyd struggle to get separation. We can see this is the case with both QB's. Without Connor would it not even be better to have an extra rushing option?

My fear is Chaney is playing the guy that can better run his offense. Not suiting his offense to the personel he has. Perhaps this is means to an end and we will see some results by the end of the season. It has yet to be beneficial as of yet from what I can tell.

He was made the starter two games ago,. Awful early to form a judgement one way or the other.

Without Conner, you need a passing game. Although he's got a ways to go, peterman still gives Pitt the best chance of developing a decent pass game. I will say, however, if you're going to have a package for Voytik, you've got to give the guy more than the read option. You have to let him air it out a bit otherwise the defense will be prepared for the run which is exactly what we saw last Saturday after about 5 read option plays.

Really ..... You don't feel that Peterman has been the better QB so far?
Combining a few things.
If he has been better its been marginal at best. I would think a positive difference would be needed to warrant the change. I know Chad ran one of the most efficient offenses in the country last year. Why not incorporate more of that into what they are doing.

Just win is a stupid mentality. The correct processes must be followed in order to win the most consistently. I don't believe that is the case here unfortunately.

If you watched the first couple of games, Chad did not look good at all and Peterman completed some down- the-field passes when he came in. To me, it's been a case of Peterman looking "OK", and CV looking not good. Chad looks like he is definitely not yet comfortable with the Chaney offense.

Hopefully they both come around, as Chad gets more experience with the offense. Did you see how Chad looked in the Iowa game? Didn't exactly exude confidence.

I blame Coach Chaney somewhat for not incorporating more of what the offense was doing last season, but I have much more confidence in Peterman than Chad right now.

Go Pitt.

I can't wait for Saturday. I will definitely be looking at what type of routes and separation the receivers get other than Boyd. They are either not open at all or both QBs are not looking around at the progressions.

I disagree. I think it's not even close. Peterman seems clearly better to

Astute comments as far I am concern?

Was my biggest fear when he was hired, but we did have key injuries at RBs and OLs. Plus, as you stated above New WRs to join Boyd. Yet, he decided a New QB was needed too?? If Pitt loses games due to Offensive missteps by Chaney that is still on Coach Pat that will have to take action later but sets back much of his progress on Defense?

On the other hand, if Chaney Offense wakes up much as Chryst did in the 5th game last year, things could be great, but "IFS Are Illusions" until we see them Realities?

Perhaps this is means to an end and we will see some results by the end of the season. It has yet to be beneficial as of yet from what I can tell.
I would hate that because too little and too late and another Chryst Coaching Season where Pitt makes a Bowl in the last games after losing 2 to 3 Games due to very bad Special teams under Chryst, Yet, I would accept it under Coach Pat & Staff First Year, but a luke-warm acceptance?

I see benefits from both points of views of the Posters.

1. On one hand, Chaney wants Two QBs and is going with the better Passer, but Peterman and Pitt Offensive Players have to adjust and learn together now with a New QB, and that takes time? But it does benefit by having a Back-Up in case of an injury.

2. Chaney could have come in and just ran the Chryst-Rudolph Offense, but he still needed New Wideouts performing like the ones that left last year that took pressure of Boyd? At the same time, Connor can be replace by Ollison so long as Chad ran more plays, and the tight Ends are more involved. Yet, Chaney with Coach Pat approval chose otherwise right now?

3. Consequently, I accept Coach Pat & Chaney developing Peterman in the first 4 and 5 games. As Chad is still available to come in an run the offense! At some point, all Pitt fans have to accept the judgement of Coach Pat & Chaney, and that is what I accept right now with cautious confidence in their coaching!

At the same time, I still think Coach Pat & Chaney will use Chad Voytik in a 1 to 2 particular games where Ball Control will be more critical such as GT, ND, UNC, and Miami?

Agree, but yet, those processes you talk about is dependent on which QB gets the most Snaps in 17 Hour weekly practice to prepare for the Game Plan and then execute it on Game Day?

When I look at that process limitation, then I can see why Chaney is making sure Peterman is getting more snaps and playing time with all the Offensive Players because he needs it to become more effective.

Chad Voytik needs less time because he decides when to scramble and run for it on Broken Plays or when Coverage is great and forces him to initiate Plays that cannot be planned in Game Plans. Voytik runs when he has to run and that is something that is not often planned for or prepared for by the Offense nor the opposing Defense set up to stop the RBs Runs and WRs/TEs Passes?

Coach Pat still has the Opposing Coaching Staffs having to worry when he puts in Voytik or will keep him in there as Peterman progresses and gets more experience in every game!

When you got the Head Coaching Job, then trust the Head Coach and I trust Coach Pat right now! Chaney is learning about Pitt Players too, as they adjust to Peterman, and Pitt Players already know Chad Voytik can do and not do?

We shall see?

This isn't middle school football. These coaches will be packing up and moving their families if they don't win games. HCPN wants to win the ACC this year. Politics and friendship and favouritism are not going to supersede the desire to win the conference. If Bertke is the best QB to win the games, he will play over Peterman and Voytik.

It is still early and I am sure that CV is competing in practice and working his tail off. He will get his chance to play and will do his best to make the most of it.

There are plays in there to utilise his skill set. We have played one conference game and it was in horrid conditions. The coaching staff hasn't shown all of their cards yet.

For the first time in a long time, I have faith in the coaching staff as they are showing their competence with their results. There will be growing pains with the transition and it should all come together more on the offensive side of the ball as the season progresses.

I agree, there is a shift in differences between prior Pitt coaches and coach Pat & Staff, very well said along with many good points within your posts, Thank You!

Harris came to Pitt because he wanted to become a Head Coach and was Pitt 4th Selection, if I am not mistaken?

Wannstedt came to Pitt because he always wanted to become the Pitt Coach ever since his playing days. In fact, he thought he was entitled and turn down the UMiami Job!

Graham came to Pitt to make a step up towards a Power Conference, Toad had no intentions of ever staying!

Chryst came to Pitt because nobody else would give him a Head Coaching job and Pederson was bailed out by Barry Alvarez, Chryst was just waiting for the Wisconsin job.

Pat Narduzzi wanted to come to Pitt!

I think it's not even close - Peterman looks much better than Voytik. Even last game Boyd dropped a couple of passes he should have easily caught and you can't blame that on the quarterback.

I believe the offense will get better and I think Peterman will too. I am glad he took over for Voytik.

My fear is Chaney is playing the guy that can better run his offense. Not suiting his offense to the personel he has.

While that may well be the case, the real problem seems (to me at least) to have a bit less to do with the OC's choice of QB and more to do with the OC's choice of plays called during the game.

Why did Chaney chose only to call run plays for Chad when he went into the VT game (something I've posted before). The defense is thinking run every time he comes in- you'd think a smart OC would bait the defense by running him few times and then have him throw the ball when you have them all thinking "run." Even Narduzzi mentioned (during Monday's press conference) he would have had Chad throw the ball.

And why so many designed run plays for Peterman during long yardage situations. I was stunned to see Nate run on a 2 and 10 and then on 3 and 6 and then on another 2 and 10 and then on a 3 and 5 and then on yet another 2 and 10 during the game. I had to check the play by play after the game to make sure I wasn't hallucinating.

Sure enough, Nate ran the ball 9 times when there were 5 or more yards to go for a 1st down (with little success). Twice on 3rd down. Here are the long yardage situations where Nate ran the ball.

2nd and 10... 3rd and 6... 1st and 10... 2nd and 10... 1st and 10... 3 and 5... 2nd and 10... 1st and 10...
2nd and 8

Why so many long yardage plays for a non dual-threat QB? Maybe Chaney was trying to prove Nate could run just as well as Chad. I do not know.

What I do know is that it wasted precious downs, killed momentum and stalled drives.

Thank goodness the defense played well enough to preserve the victory. Methinks PN is going to need to be a little more "hands on" with the offense from now on.

I'm not a mechanics of throwing expert but his delivery is maybe the first " good looking motion" we have had in a really long time. Throwing from a high point over the top as opposed to a side arm. To me he looks decisive, gets to the line with purpose and just looks like he wants to push the ball downfield. He certainly passes the eyeball test as a starter. His weather conditions have been historically terrible in two games that were monsoons. Nobody has great stats in those conditions.

I QB "experts" would take Peterman 100 time out of 100 because of his throwing motion and accuracy. If you asked Kiper or McShay, they would laugh. But, I just wonder if Chad is a better college QB because of his running ability and improvosational skills. A lot of our big plays came with Chad getting out of the pocket and making something happen. He's not a great drop-back passer so I dont think Chaney wants to have to rely on Chad making plays outside the pocket.

The much bigger issue here is we have no "2 WR and no slot WR. Its just Boyd. Im going to continue to say that we either need to move Whitehead to WR or give him 10-15 plays per game there to see if he can get open.

I see very little from nate, maybe two to three plays that make me happy. I see nothing from Chad outside of a couple designed runs. so to summarize, both need to get a lot better to be considered average

We have to shed the thinking that one QB can only pass and one QB can only run. Last year, Chad put-up some decent passing numbers (after they took the shackles off of his legs). I'm gonna be disappointed if we don't see Chad throwing the ball more - as part of an expanded package of plays.

I re-watched his highlight video on youtube, chad has some nice throws, downfield too. Of course it's a highlight video but they go thru each game and there are a handful of nice throws. Problem I see with Chad is that he seems to think about each throw instead of just throwing it.. I mean, I very rarely saw him just drop back 3 or 5 steps, look and throw.. It seems like he needs to roll out and let play develop, hesitate, then make a throw. Nothing at all as far as success in the pocket. The roll outs and hit a guy coming across is great and all but sometimes it's nice just to see 1-2-3 throw.. Either incomplete or reception, move onto next play.. It's him looking at Boyd, looking, looking, roll out, then either force one to Boyd or run around.. Sometimes it works but sometimes an incomplete pass isn't the end of the world.. It's playground ball to me..

If he could just develop that part of the game, that traditional style QB skill set. He is a great athlete and yes he should utilize that but no one on the planet (except my man Big Ben of course) can properly go thru his progressions while running full speed to his right.. It would be awesome just to see him look at option 1 and either throw or look at option 2 and throw it.. that's it, just do it and see what happens..

Like I said though, nate isn't exactly making me all wet in the crotch either.. I can recall from memory the average to above average throws and count them on one hand.. Two nice throws to Holtz and Scott in Va tech game, nice deep ball that weah punched at, average post pattern that boyd dropped and that's all I recall for va tech.. I mean, that's it.. Iowa had some nice throws I guess, Akron he had about 2 throws.. I mean we are talking about 2, 3, 4 average throws a game from him. Not exactly setting the world on fire..

Great point Del. Voytik's game includes the threat of his getting out of the pocket and killing teams with his legs, like QBs have been doing to Pitt for a long time. And he can still throw the ball. I still think there is room for both QBs during the course of a given game. Change of pace can be a good thing.

I am a Pitt fan first, but I am also a Chad backer, so I am very biased. I thought at the end of last season he was playing well. Throwing the ball well with the added benefits of being a good runner. The offense was putting up good points, mostly by running well of course, but still throwing it well the last half of season, and moving the chains thru the air when needed. My issue with the way this was handled is it appears to this Chad backer that Chaney was looking for reason to get "his" recruit in the game. Chad basically got one game that he did not play well in and that was that. To say that the QB's rotated at Akron is really stretching the meaning of the word rotate. About two series, six plays, a few running plays and short pass routes. Less at Iowa. Nate had a great last drive at Iowa. I think Narduzzi is not just giving lip service about Chad being a competitor. He sees someone who can help the team and has come up with this "package" for Chad. I hope this package will expand to some passes as Coach says it will. At the end of the day, to the credit of the two QB's they seem to be good people, and true teammates to each other. So.....I want Pitt to win. Either way I will cheer for both players, and that the o line can continue to improve and Ollie startt running a little more downhill as they say.

Chad was playing better than well at the end of last season. Pitt's offensive numbers were up there with Ohio State and Oregon, look it up. I think Nate has a lot of potential, but saying Chad has been given a chance this year is ridiculous. I liked seeing his role this past game, but even then it was very predictable. So instead of mixing it up what do they do? They let Peterman run (he did have one nice one.)
It's very obvious Chaney wants his guy, that was decided months ago. We'll see how things go though, I for one support all the players. So as much as I want Nate to succeed, I feel terrible for Chad. I thought last year he showed he was a great leader that could make plays out of nothing. We should be lucky though, we have two capable quarterbacks.

It almost seems like some people care about and are loyal to "Chad" the person! Screw that, all players are disposable parts to be discarded if a superior performing part comes along. Peterman is the better player, seniority means nothing.

Hmmmnnn, you must be a Psychic but you know your Football, Chaney needs to see it, but he more worried just making Peterman more consistent! The Dynamic Du Tight Ends are being overlooked as well, they can catch, run, and throw, but Chaney has to give Peterman more game time just setting up?

Learning to play with Players one does not know causes this problem. In my opinion, this is the game for Chad Voytik to be prepared for more and can run around them? Hope Chaney is ready if Peterman is confused again?

Exactly, and Coach pat may have to settle down Chaney in this game more than ever.

This the game for Peterman to make good, but Virginia's Defense will be good again in rushing, sacking, and covering Pitt! Pitt has to have some plays ready to stop that from Virginia.

Good points, and Peterman is a QB Virginia can prepare for and Voytik is more of an Unknown on what to plan for if some plays are broken up? Both can adjust and up to Peterman to wake up and just play better, if not, have Chad ready like Coach Pat has said all this year. The big question is knowing when to use them both if one starts to falter or is not playing well, or Virginia is able to stop one of them. I don't want to see 0-3 Oregon State Game ever again.

I don't see it that way, I see the Players know Chad more and are learning under Peterman more, and that is the normal way the OC & QB learn to work together with the Offensive Players.

Virginia Defense is capable of stopping the Pitt Running and Passing Games, then the OC has to be ready to throw wretch in it and use Voytik more this particular game. On the other hand, if Peterman is doing just fine, no need for it!

Silly argument. They are clearly playing the better of the two players.
All coaches play the guys that perform the best in practice. Always has been that way, always will be that way.

Obviously Peterman is that guy. Again, I think Voytik was playing well down the stretch last year and was poised to have a very good year this year had PC not left, or had we kept his offense in place. . But it looks like yet another new playbook put Voytik right back to square one.

I have no doubt the coaches are playing the guy that is performing the best in practice. Their livelihoods depend on winning.
