I have trouble deciding what the expectations should be for this program.
Dixon 2
I thought Capel had turned the corner and established a Dixon 2 program but I was wrong. He just lucked into Blake Hinson.
Lucking into Blake, and getting Bub to enroll and give us several highlights last year showed me (at least) that perhaps Pitt BB had begun to turn around. That the "best" he (Capel) could do this past year, after the success of the previous two, is get Cam Corhen speaks volumes. And as you say, the new landscape of college sports dictates that coaches can both evaluate talent and then pay for it with NIL money (or soon to be, salaries). I hope that if Pitt commits to paying top $ for their athletes, Capel can at least choose better/tougher players and then coach them to be winnersDixon 2 winning % = 64%
Pitt last 3 seasons winning % = 62.62%
Totally get that the competition is different, but so is the landscape - and we're at a greater disadvantage now.
But, again, I'm totally find with striving to do better. And these last three years did not happen in a vacuum; in conjunction with those first four seasons, it's pretty clear to see that lucking into Blake Hinson was about the extent of Capel's success. Maybe he just needs a guy named Blake to make tournaments.

no argument hereCam Corhen wasn't cheap, though. Capel specifically identified him. We could have gotten a lot more bang for that buck.
Lowe and Leggett weren't cheap either, so I don't think he's entirely hamstrung by NIL; I just think he isn't a good coach. Like, I have no doubt that if you added another $500,000 player to this roster we'd be better. But I'm also not seeing any schemes Capel is running that makes me think, "Wow, that's impressive." Blake Hinson hit so many threes that weren't even good looks. That bailed Capel out, in my opinion.
I have no idea at this point. I really see no end in sight. I just can’t believe we’ve fallen this far. I don’t even like to sit and think about it. The one thing I do know is Jeff Capel cannot be here after this season.I have trouble deciding what the expectations should be for this program. Obviously 4-12 or 4-13 or whatever we've been lately isn't going to cut it. But from a macro viewpoint, are these past three seasons about what we're going to see? Like, do we have any inherent advantages over some other ACC programs that haven't accomplished much of anything in a long time? Not sure, honestly. Which doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for better.
