Just for shits and giggles, what would the Pete be like if Tiger Paul from the 70’s was still around. Imagine Paul running up and down the sidelines at the 7 minute mark of the second half in a game against Duke. Would the Zoo have gone crazy.

anybody remember the demise of that famous Pitt Cheerleader.

Was it Billick? You might be right. Was he worried about the image of the university.

I can tell you this...the players and the coaching staff loved Tiger Paul. The cheerleaders, not so much, until they finally learned to cheer WITH him.

Billick was not a good person...

he has been spotted several times at the Pete recently surprisingly enough

I remember some great games back in the old Eastern Eight between the Panthers and Duquesne would play and watching Tiger Paul and Mossie Murphy going head to head...sometimes more entertaining the actual game.

It was a good time to be a basketball fan in the burgh. Favorite recollection was Tiger Paul sporting a tuxedo when Duke came to town the year after we upset them.

Wasn't it a woman who was in charge of the dance team that hated him, and worked to get him canned? Billick used to be the color guy for Pitt hoops.

Did you encounter him in Vegas? It is a sad ending.

I did not, he was in the sportsbook business a little before my time. I did know some people that worked with him though, including the author of the story I posted.

From what I heard he was a really colorful guy (obviously) that unfortunately ended up like a lot of other gamblers and started betting more than he could afford. Horrible way for him to end up, someone that knew I was a Pitt grad had asked if I knew who he was and that’s how I originally heard about how he died.

Just another great decision the university made in regards to management of their athletic department .
Tiger Paul was the absolute best !

IIRC, Pitt played Idaho in the NCAAs in the 70s, in El Paso. Tiger Paul rode a bus from Pittsburgh to El Paso (!) to see the game.

I got to know Tiger very well when he became close with the family of a good friend of mine who went on to play basketball at Marquette. Tiger was a smart guy, just different. Probably was on the spectrum before people were really aware of that. My friend’s family helped him fulfill a dream and he had a one man show at the Holiday House in Monroeville.

An unimportant tidbit I always wondered about. When Tiger Paul started to become a thing, why didn't people immediately change his name to "Panther" Paul?

1981. I remember either Myron or Stan Savran had Al McGuire on before the game, and he predicted that "Pitt will eat those potatoes".
