This is just my opinion:

Herrion added more as an X's and O's guy and in game preparation and player development than either Barry or Barton.

Some have said that Herrion was not a good recruiter and that he was guilty of recruiting mistakes - Maybe so.

It does seem to me though, that if you missed out on all your primary targets, that he had the kind of recruiting contacts to at least find someone late that was capable of contributing.(particularly at the JC level)

Herrion more closely fits the profile of those coaches on the NC State staff(experienced, accomplished and connected) than some past and current assistants at Pitt. I think not having him or a similar coach is a huge mistake.

Herrion has been their best assistant, IMO. I was all for bringing him back and not going the AAU route when Slice's job opened up.

Time will tell with Smoke, but I'm surprised that people would've been dissatisfied with Herrion's recruiting. In terms of stars and rankings he was the best they've had, IMO.

Have always thought Slice was pretty highly overrated. A guy who had a catchy nickname, was around right when Pitt got good, relatively charismatic. But never thought he ever recruited nearly as well as his reputation here.

The best recruiter in college basketball disagrees.

As I see it... bringing in Smoke is an attempt... given the drying up of our major recruiting area on the east coast... to get recruits from the midwest.

It is not gonna work and IMO not a good hire AT ALL.

Lol yes, I'm sure Calipari is super worried about a guy's actual recruiting ability when he takes him under his massive recruiting machine's wing.

Calipari took Orlando Antigua, who was loathed among the fanbase for his inability to recruit, and made him a prominent member of his staff.

Rohrssen was his buddy. His abilities on or off the court had 0 to do with being hired.

Just my opinion ...... Slice, Lombardi, Rice, and Herrion were all better assistant coaches and/or recruiters at Pitt then any assistant coach that we have on the staff at present and therein lies some of the problem ..... others may disagree, but that is my opinion at this point in time .....

Smoke is getting Winston and Moore to visit. With the crap position they are in at PG maybe they can convince one of them to come.

Definitely not true. Just unbelievably untrue.

It's true...Kentucky struggled with recruiting before his glorious season..and recruiting has fallen off completely for them since his departure.

Insiders know Slice was brought to UK because of his flashy suits. It really resonated with the 5 star recruits UK brings in. I mean, have you ever watched the NBA Draft? And also, what kid really doesn't like pizza?

Let's recap... it's been pointed out that Slice is over-rated as a recruiter based on his track record.
It's offered that his 1 season at Kentucky is proof if his recruiting ability..despite there being literally no uptick or downtick in their program's recruiting prior to and after his departure, rather than a personal relationship with Calipari (like Orlando had as well).
This is pointed out.
And which side is in denial of the facts?

It's difficult to accurately assess his performance at Kentucky. Coming in mid-Summer, it should be hard for one assistant to guarantee signings while starting that late. It is however, inaccurate to say there was no uptick or downtick in their recruiting. Their class was still very good for most schools, but they missed most of their top targets. Compared with the previous class, it was a downtick. Of course, that's a little like saying a Pet isn't quite as hot as a Playmate. There's not a whole lot to complain about for most guys.

If you set the bar as high as they did in their recent classes, it is tough to match it every year.

It was generally considered Slice was hired because of his connections with several big name targets. He whiffed on Diallo and Swanigan, although to be fair, he wasn't the main guy for KY with Swanigan. He definitely helped KY with Briscoe although he hadn't been the main recruiter on him either.

Moving on to St. John's, it was considered his hiring made the Johnnies a favorite for Heron. That didn't happen either. Signing one of 4 5-stars isn't bad, but I'd think Calipari expected more. And, I doubt that a 1 season stay was what Cal had in mind. But, if Slice gets Rawle Alkins to St. John's , Mullin will probably be happy.
