Free Fallin
+1Too many solid choices to pick one. I like his early stuff through the later years. He changed some over time, but I still liked his music. Cant say that about some bands that were around a long time.
Refugee. Breakdown. American Girl. Women in Love.
Tom Petty is one of the strangest artists of all-time in that I have never heard a single person cite him as their favorite artist.
However, I have also never heard anyone describe his music as junk. He’s in that weird sweet spot where he is no one’s favorite but also universally well-respected in the rock ‘n’ roll community.
His death is a great loss to American music.
I think Wildflowers was his best album, with strong consideration also given to Damn the Torpedoes. I just think Wildflowers is so elegant and beautiful from beginning to end.
My favorite Petty songs are “You Got Lucky,” “Don’t Do Me Like That,” “Even The Losers,” “Refugee” and “American Girl.” I think they’re all phenomenal American classic rock songs.
What I always liked best about him as an artist was that he always had his own sound. When a Tom Petty song came on the radio, you typically knew it within the first few bars. There’s nobody else out there who sounds like him. He’s kind of like his own sub-genre in the rock ‘n’ roll world. I think that’s a really difficult thing to do – establish a unique identity – and he did it pretty flawlessly.
It is driving music. You're never in the mood for it but you never switch stations when his stuff comes over the radio. The Dr. nailed some of my thoughts on Petty. He didnt really have a singer's voice. His florida swamp drawl made him unique though. And you just cant overlook the hits. He had tons. I agree that while I rarely pull out his music to listen to, if I hear one of his songs on the radio, I crank to max level and sing along. He has a nostalgic feel of Americana.
BINGO. You know, either here or somewhere else I wrote something similar when he died. When they started playing alot of his music in retrospect, and you start realizing the songs, I was thinking "my god, why does his name come up with Springsteen when they talk about the greatest American rock star"?Tom Petty is one of the strangest artists of all-time in that I have never heard a single person cite him as their favorite artist.
