TV Viewing of Sports is Changing

I don't think nets are terribly bothered. They're losing money in sports programming at a frightening rate

Sort of weird to watch happen and us old guys might not get it, but it's very easy to see how streaming could replace what we know as TV today.
going to be annoyed if I have to go in and talk to one of the 45 employees in the apple store at the mall just to have to watch pitt hoops games.. No bro, I don't want a new $7,000 computer, I just want to watch pitt v. Central Arkansas game on my tv without having to hook it up to my laptop with an hdmi cable..

It's not that hard man....

It may be easy and I do it a lot but 'd have to agree with the original post, I don't one to be annoyed/bothered with hooking up my laptop via cable to my tv to watch a broadcast.

On a related note, does anyone have a 'smart tv' that actually is any good at watching an online sporting broadcast. I have 2 Samsung Smart TV's, the 2nd only about a year old. They are both garbage anytime I've tried to watch a Pitt game on ESPN3 - freezes up continuously and I have to restart. I don't have any problems at all when watching the same ESPN3 broadcast from my old laptop. I've tried watching both simultaneously to confirm it wasn't just the ESPN3 feed and it is always no problems on the laptop but continuous problems on the SmartTV. So I've given up with ESPN3 broadcasts from the SmartTV.

I'm guessing they just have a really bad wireless router or whatever in these SmartTV's. But I don't know, never have any problems with them when watching Netflix or equivalent streams from the SmartTV.

Yinzers and technology don't mix. Maybe these advances would help our attendance. If they can't master hdmi cables maybe they'll master putting their backsides in seats. (Sarcasm font. Kinda?)

having to plug in your hdmi cable into your laptop to watch pitt sports on espn 3 is what you call "Advancement?" Sorry my friend, it's more about a bad tv deal with acc and espn than it is any technological advancement.. It's wtae running "Fresh off the Boat" reruns in Pittsburgh over pitt hoops games, nothing to do with advancement..

What could be easier than that?? My rig has 2 HDMI inputs...one for the DVD, the other for my laptop. $15.00 cord, no monthly fee....yet. It'll be PPV/subscription before long.

im more annoyed at the poor production to be honest than the chore of buying a chord. Did it for the pitt-akron game, again it's easier than hooking up a Nintendo when I was 12.. Maybe my "fight" is with the espn 3, half assed production moreso than the process..

Lmao nothing. If you couldn't notice the joking around in that post then I'm not sure what to tell you

well tough to tell when someone is joking, sarcastic or serious by just reading text.. That is why we have a sarcasm font chadpapp.. Get on board bro..

Sorry bro, guess you couldn't read the words in the parentheses bro. I'm on board now bro.

I don't need any sound....mostly drivel. Put on the Pat Boone heavy metal CD.

the akron game was tough, horrible production. Looked like I was watching my old grade school games on vhs from my dad's camcorder.. Frustrating when you sit thru this and then turn on a Shippinsburg vs. Edinboro game right after and the picture is 100xs better.. I'll live, im a pitt fan so I got to complain about something..

That's totally unacceptable! Far more unbearable than sitting in a cold, torrential rainfall for 2 1/2 hours cheering on the team to victory.

no offense perchance but driving to akron to watch a game in a rainstorm in front of hundreds of people sounds about as enticing as going to a Hillary Clinton rally with cmu students..

I think streaming will become a very serious competitor to cable once they work out the technical kinks and bandwidth issues. I stream many of the Pitt games to my TV already (out of necessity) but the quality is crap...total garbage. Constantly freezing, image quality is horrible...etc. What good is a 60" 4K TV when the signal sucks?

The bottom line is that the technology will continue to advance and eventually catch up to cable, but that day appears to be a few years off.

Thanks Cruzer, this explains my frustration the most... People on here say to catch up with the time, get onboard with technology. I'd be fine with it if it was some sort of advancement but we are doing several more steps for a product that is horrible.. I'd walk across the earth for a better product but im getting out laptop and plugging in an hdmi cable for a horrendous picture.. That's the annoying part.

There are 6 games on at any given time on a Saturday, all in HD, beautiful crystal-clear pictures and then you watch a pitt game on ESPN 3, of which we seem to on a few times a year, and it's pure garbage..

Whoever mentioned apple, don't do it.
Want to stream games to your TV that is easy?
Roku!
They even have one model that is just a stick you plug into the HDMI port of your TV.
So the only thign you then need to worry about is finding the remote (but Roku has good apps for a remote for both smartphone and tablet, used both very good)
ESPN3 has been ok, but expect it to get better (occasional freezes)

I have never used Roku, but have Chromecast. Chromecast is brilliant! Plug it into your HDMI port and download the app to your tablet, phone, laptop or desktop. You can cast anything from your browser to the big screen. Others can still use the computer or device for other purposes without disturbing the stream. And it's not expensive. I got mine with reward points for free. Been using it for streaming NHL games and Netflix and absolutely love it.

Kodachrome ..... Sorry I digress. I remember getting in a car with friends to go to the free Simon and Garfunkel concert in Central Park.

No offense taken. That weekend was very pleasant and productive.
Glad you decided not to attend. Wouldn't want you to catch a cold, melt or something. .

As to Hillary, infinitely preferable to a comp week at Tiamo Resort in the Bahamas with ANY of the other candidates.

Might be your router. I've only tried it once.....not much difference in quality. I'm a bit spoiled by these HD rigs, just as we all are, but I had no adverse opinion. Will use it more in the future. Do these router "booster" gizmos help??

Well the 4K is worthless right now for sports because no one is broadcasting in it. What internet speed do you have? Your problem is probably either your router or your connection. Run a few speed tests and check it.

One thing I don't understand is why people go cheap on routers. You spend thousands on devices that use the Internet but people cheap out and buy a $50 router. Then they complain when it is slow or they have poor wifi reception. You can get a top of the line router for under $250.

That's an excellent point. Router is probably more important than anything else assuming you have the speed coming into the house. Need one that can handle everyone being on it at the same time.
