UCLA New Coach

I think this is another product of the trend we are starting to see is that these college head coach gigs as they open up are going to start going to younger, less experienced coaches who will get paid a lot less and who won't be expected to stay with the programs that hire them for as long as is currently typical . Everything about college football is changing.

Might as well make that hire. Any coach they get who does well is going to get poached, but if Foster does well he would likely stay.

After an exhausted "national" search ( according to UCLA) they have decided on ex RB Foster. He lacks HC or Coordinator experience!

UCLA names former player Foster as new coach
It sounds as if they didn't need to look further than him: "We are looking for a coach with integrity, energy and passion; someone who is a great teacher, who develops young men, is a great recruiter and fully embraces the NIL landscape to help our student-athletes," athletic director Martin Jarmond said in a statement. "DeShaun checks all of those boxes and then some. He is a leader of men and a true Bruin."

Odd that there is nothing in that list of attributes about actually coaching football.

Well they tried a couple of those guys and look where that got them.

The trends are changing. Dan Campbell had the lightest resume by far of anyone who interviewed for the Lions job a couple of years ago, he had never even been a coordinator or play caller. He hired highly experienced and highly regarded offensive mind and former Chargers HC Anthony Lynn to be his OC. The offense was terrible for 1.5 seasons and in the middle of 2022 Campbell demoted Lynn and assumed play calling duties himself and the O immediately responded. After the 2021 season Campbell promoted a little known 35 year old TE coach named Ben Johnson to OC. Johnson had never called plays or been a coordinator before, but Campbell knew he was smart and innovative and had ideas that he liked. The offense exploded under Johnson and has easily been one of the best in the NFL in his 2 seasons. Jared Goff, who was one or two steps from the glue factory, blossomed into one of the best starting QBs in the NFL.

Sometimes it's about the man, not the resume. A lot of these "experienced" guys that just do the same ol' same ol' every season, everyhere they go and keep getting jobs and underperforming at them aren't worth a hot $hit. I'll take a chance on a young, hungry, smart guy with a fresh approach any day over one of those washed up, paycheck-stealing bums.

That said, DeShaun has his work cut out for him at that moribund program. If Chip Kelly can't get it done there, I'm not sure who can.
