Unpleasant assessment

The annual "self loathing Pitt fan" thread.

I swear some guys are just perennially miserable and look for reasons to complain. All of those predictions could come true, and so what? Is Pitt any worse off? Nope. At worst, the programs still looks better at this time next year just because there is a lot of change in motion.

Better chance that things are improving. The band wagon will start to fill up when that happens. Please hop off now if it bothers you so much.

It is funny. Everyone was so hip on Chambers and Barnes. "They get it". All of this talk And then Jamie feels the pressure because perhaps "they get it" were no longer feeling the half empty Pete and the declining basketball program and obviously Jamie wasn't feeling what seemed to be more questions and intrusion from the Administration and bailed.

So then............something happened with Sean Miller. We have more than a few fairly credible sources/posters who will swear on a stack of bibles that Miller or his camp and Pitt reaches out to each other. How far those discussions went, what happened is not known, but people (media) started to connect the dots and Pantherland was all abuzz because it was almost reported as a "done deal". It obviously wasn't. Then we hear "national search" and "Search Firm". To the best of my knowledge, Tom Izzo, Shaka Smart, Mike Brey, Jay Wright, John Calipari, etc....all were gainfully employed and not looking to dine on Primanti's sammiches.

Gregg Marshall has spurned down bigger jobs he didn't come. Neither did Uber Christian Bryce Drew. So the search committee was enacted and.......Kevin Stallings? WTF? Stallings has grown stale at Vandy, but Vandy is a hard place to excel. But we get a guy from a search firm headed by a guy who previously employed Barnes and was previously employed by Vandy. And now Pantherland is furious. Duped! Friends hiring friends! Lied to. First off, when were fans part of any coaching search? Secondly, who here in business doesn't try and use connections when possible? That is how business is conducted. It isn't some nefarious act.

And then the PC which Barnes did not acquit himself too well, but he was completely set up by a ridiculously rabid media with accusations more than questions.

And now Barnes sucks. Chambers don't care. And Pitt is Pitt again. I don't get it. You want to know the real reason why Pitt athletics sucks? Look in the mirror. All of you. You want the perfect Pitt guy to hire the perfect Pitt guy, and if he isn't a Pitt guy, well he better at least damn well appreciate fish sammiches at the local VFW during Lent (Narduzzi). So here we go, Pederson is gone, the same divisiveness is back among the fanbase and it will yield the same mediocrity.
Chambers?? Marilyn?? Jerry??

of this year's FB team and of the new Pres's and AD's commitment on the blather blog--

Likely 6-6 finish this FB season belief of several based on spring game and fall schedule strength.

Prediction by one blog author that there is no commitment to spend the $$s necessary to hire or retain FB or BB coaches even if they become highly successful. Pitt likely unwilling to pay over about $2-2.5 million to any coach again no matter the success level.

Pretty depressing outlook if proven true.
Did I read the OPs comment correctly, that a prediction is being made in part "based on spring game?" Please tell me you're joking.

Chambers?
You mean Gallagher?

a lot of people sang the praises of Barnes for reasons mainly being, he wan't Pederson.. He mailed out some surveys to fans and all of a sudden, he is in tune with the fanbase.. Got a couple fans together and this was some incredible feat, laughable to be honest.. Guy called the fanbase "Noise" and over promised us a coach when in reality, we took a guy that was getting canned from an average SEC program.. A lesson learned (I hope) and I am sure next time, he'll shut his trap, do his job in searching for a coach before shooting off his mouth to get headlines..

On a brighter side, think he did hire a good soccer coach (Buddy of mine who likes soccer says the dude is legit), so yeah for us on that..
Pretty much.

I'll say this living in Ga....haven't heard one Dawg fan complain all that much about losing Richt... Basically you hear he was"a good man who went to church"...I'm not sure that's a endorsement of his coaching or if that's even a good fit for Miami quite frankly...

Here's a whole blog on it.

http://www.dawgsports.com/2015/10/12/9508699/after-15-years-the-time-has-come-fire-mark-richt

Quotes:

Since that 2007 season Mark Richt has been down right abysmal and mediocre at best considering the resources he has available at UGA. Since 2007, we are 68-31, over that same time span, he is now 14-22 against top 25 ranked teams. With an average margin of defeat of about 13 points in those games. Even more frustrating is his 4-13 record against top 10 teams, with an average margin of defeat of 17 points in those games. Georgia has also lost to an unranked opponent 9 times since 2007, and has lost at least one game by over 15 points. To make matters even worse, of the 31 games that Richt has lost, Georgia was favored in 21 of them. The numbers don’t lie people. Based solely off of his performance over the past 8 seasons, I honestly don’t even think Vanderbilt would hire him. Richt’s teams have appeared to be unprepared and unmotivated to play in games every year, always suffering one, (sometimes even a couple) unexplainable and more importantly unforgiveable losses. The Alabama game this season, every loss last season (especially Florida),

Year-in and year-out Georgia fans watch in amazement as former players who experienced ok/mediocre careers at UGA, develop into stars in the NFL. Geno Atkins, Danielle Ellerbe, Marlon Brown, Justin Houston, and Reshad Jones are just a few examples. Then there was the 2008 preseason number 1 team. Looking back, that 2008 Georgia football team might have been the most underutilized group of athletes ever. That team included future NFL starters: Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno, AJ Green, Clint Boling, Ben Jones, Cordy Glenn, Geno Atkins, Justin Houston, Akeem Dent, Danell Ellerbe, and Reshad Jones. You give that team to Saban and he doesn’t even come close to losing a game all year. But of course, Mark Richt pulled a Mark Richt and somehow lost 3 games that year.

Last, I’d like to discuss the present state of the program and the direction that it seems to be going under Richt’s leadership. Georgia has been favored in every game (yes every game) the past 2 seasons, and we’ve somehow managed to lose 5 of them. Included in those 5 losses are two humiliating, 18+ point losses. It’s now also been almost 10 years since we’ve won an SEC Championship. After suffering so many losses in big games as well as mind boggling upsets to lesser ranked opponents, there appears to be a major culture problem within and surrounding the Georgia football program

What about Deshaun Watson? No question he's the undisputed best player in the conference, if not the country, and don't give me the "he'll suck in the NFL" line, because this isn't the NFL. It's college, where if you have a real difference maker at QB, you can go places. And Cook is outstanding, again, how he eventually does in the NFL is irrelevant., he;s a beast at FSU. I love how you throw Reggie Bush out there like he;s some chump. He was unbelievable at USC. And for the record, I think Cook will do just fine in the NFL.He has been awesome his first two years at FSU.

James is a great football player, a great representative of Pitt, and a great kid. Can't you just leave it at that? Why do you have to make these extreme, all-or-nothing statements?

As for counting wins that we "would have" had if our stud RB was healthy, that's just childish. Your posts are exaggerated and hyperbolic beyond the pale. It's like you can't comment on anything without making these kinds of grandiose, exaggerated claims. "Justice Kithcart is a WAY better player than Alkins, just WAIT until that RDU all-star game and you'll all see!"

-TD's is what matters. TOUCHDOWNS. Every game Florida State lost, they couldnt punch the ball into the end zone. Cook is an open field player. Get him in the red zone with less space he is way less effective. Florida State lost multiple games last year for failure to score in the end zone.

-James Conner scored 26TD's in a single season at Pitt, that's the ACC ALL TIME single season TD record. ALL TIME. Cook scored 19 playing for Florida State's. Let's let the 2 players switch teams and watch what happens, because we know Florida State and Clemson have more talent than Pitt. Put James Conner on Clemson, and he probably breaks 30, if not 35 TD's in a single season if healthy.

-And 3rd, you are putting words in my mouth. I never said Kithcart was better than Alkins. I said I cant wait to see the game. I dont think Kithcart even played in the game.

-Watson is a QB. And for a player that had 13 Interceptions, that is no where near Elite. No where.

Pederson sent out a survey also. Was more in depth, as I recall.

barnes greatest accomplishment to date his that he is NOT steve Pederson..

So the stat that matters most for RBs is touchdowns, and a QB that leads his team all the way to the national championship game, where he accounts for 500 yards of offense and 4 scores in a nail-biter against the best defense in college football, isn't "elite" because of his INT tally on the year?

I don't even know where to start in debunking those statements.

You are amazing dude--just amazing.

Your original post stated that nobody in the ACC has a player the caliber of Conner. That statement was not restricted to RBs.

And as for the Kithcart thing, gimme a break with the revisionist history. You hyped that Raleigh-Durham metro all-star game up repeatedly as an event where Kithcart would prove to the world that he was a better player than Alkins, who is a consensus top 20 player. Why even do that? Why not just state your believe that Kithcart is an underrated player that you think will be a good one? Why do you have to suggest that he's better than a consensus 5 star kid?

Why? Because that's what you do. You should change your handle to Hyperbolic Curtain.

interesting conversation. First off, last year's team would have been better with JC, no doubt about it, not even worth arguing about. Would that mean 1 or 2 more wins, well who the hell knows.. As much as I love Conner, I would trade Watson for JC right now without hesitating a second. Mainly because an elite QB will do more than an elite RB. Or let me word it differently. We would be better team with Watson and Ollison/Hall/Moss than we would be with 2014 Conner on this team.. Please don't think im knocking JC at all, love the guy but a QB is more important than a RB. It's really quite simple. An elite QB with an average RB wins more than an Average QB and the best running back in the world.. We've seen it, we had McCoy, we had Conner in '14, we had Lewis put up 1600+, we've seen very good if not great, running back seasons and we've gone 6-6 in those years..

Even in the nfl we've seen it. with the steelers and thru out the nfl. Guys like Pederson, rush for 1900 yards and the Vikings barely make the playoffs. Barry Sanders, incedible, again, very rarely did that team even make the playoffs.. Just to easy to win in football with average rbs if you have an elite QB..

I'll say this, if Watson played for Pitt last year, minus James Connor, Pitt beats Iowa, easily beats Syracuse instead of a nail biter, probably beats UNC and wins the Coastal. If Pitt had a healthy Connors AND Watson, then they probably beat everyone except ND, because Pitt could not stop ND on Defense.

If James Connors played for Clemson, if healthy, he would still dominate like he did for Pitt, but probably not have as many TDs due to other players who can score TDs. Much more talent to go around on Clemson than who can score TDs for Pitt.

-This is bs period. You need red zone players to score. Cook isn't a red zone player. Bettis is a red zone player. Conner is a redzone player. Bama is a redzone team. They run it down your throat and you can't stop it, especially in the 4th quarter. Its the Bama and Steelers trademark, dominant defense, dominant run game. If Clemson had Conner, the Bama defense would have been exhausted in the 4 the quarter. Control the clock, control the line, wear down the opponent. Saban gets this. I am think Narduzzi does too. Stack the defense and the run game.

What did I say that is exactly bs?? Did I say Pitt needs to be a finesse team or something? No, I said if Pitt had Watson they go 10-2 last year. If Connor played for Clemson, he still would be a top 3 RB in the country, but he would not have scored as many TDs people because Clemson has other skilled players who would score from 50 yards out, 10 yards out or 1 yard out. I may be wrong, or I may be right, but guess what that is my opinion.

I love the way Narduzzi plays and would love for Pitt to be as physical and dominant in the running game as Bama, however, with that said, again if Pitt had Watson, IMO they go 10-2 last year, and with Watson and a healthy JC 11-1.

What exactly is bs in these statements, or sorry, opinions??

You asked what would Pitt have been last year with Watson, and I replied. Sorry you did not like the response. With that said, if Clemson did not have Watson last year, they would not have been playing Bama in for the title, IMO.

Maybe if Clemson had anyone at RB that could pound the football into the d-line they would have won. Clemson's rb had 14 carries for 40 yards. Henry for Bama had 160 yards and 3 TD' s, embarrassing and freight training all over Clemson' s defense. Saban would of ran Conner into the ground against Clemson, and he would of destroyed Clemson all game. Saban champion, dabo, loser. Get a running back.

Did you watch that game, or any other non-Pitt game last year? Nobody ran the ball on Bama last year, yet Clemson managed more net rushing yardage than Bama did in that game. You apparently don't realize this, but there's a bit more to running the ball than having a great back-any back is only as good as his O line, and the other team's D line has a whole lot to do with it. Henry averaged 3 ypc outside of his 50 yard TD run in the first quarter. He didn't embarass anybody-Clemson handled him for the most part after the big run, but Coker and OJ Howard killed them. Even so, it took a kickoff return for TD for Bama to eke out the win.

Clemson has a RB-his name is Wayne Gallman, and he's a preseason All-American candidate going into his junior year. But Bama had 11 future NFL players on D and one of the best front 7s ever assembled. So it was tough sledding for anyone trying to run on them. Their corners are bigger, more athletic amd more physical than most other teams' linebackers.

Are you actually suggesting that the Bama run game would have been more productive against Clemson with Conner at RB instead of Henry? Or are you suggesting that Clemson would have beat Bama if they'd had Conner instead of Gallman at RB? Either contention is patently absurd.

The hits really keep coming from you. Just amazing.

-The only thing amazing is your failure to understand scoring TD's wins football games. YPC is the most useless stat when you have an ATM running back, Automatic Touchdown Machine that continuously punches the ball into the endzone when in the redzone. Bettis averaged 3.9 yards per carry in the NFL. He also scored 91TD's, 11th best all time, ATM, and an NFL hall of famer and Superbowl Champion. Henry is ATM. Conner is ATM. Pumping up Gallmen who scored 13 TD's for the entire season is a flat out joke. All American? With 13's TD's for the entire season? Clemson was 16th in the Country in scoring offense for the entire season, good, but hardly Elite. They weren't in any top 10 for redzone scoring, including Touchdowns.

-Neither of these teams are even close to being the best ever, so stop pumping them. Louisville, North Carolina, Notre Dame all pushed Clemson to the brink this season. Clemson didnt play a single road game against a ranked team all season, they had the biggest gift wrapped regular season schedule ever.

-There is a reason these flashy running back that put up great YPC but average TD numbers constantly bust in the NFL. They nor you understand redzone scoring, which cost Florida State 2 different football games this year.

-Henry scoring 3 TD's is all that needs to be said. He ran Clemson over, period.

No way man. Watson is light years more important than Connor. And i am not taking anything away from James.

A dynamic QB is THE MOST important position in college football. He can carry his team to championships.
Something Pitt hasn't had forever. The day we finally do is the day we turn the corner.

-The most important position is the D-Line. This is what happens to good QB's against dominant defenses. So much for championships for Clemson and Oregon. Getting in the Endzone is what counts. And notice in both games the winning team dominated the run game.

I can't draw too many conclusions from the spring game.

However, anyone that looks at thisxyear's schedule and says it is no harder than last year is insane.

Narduzzi has a ton to prove still. Last year was good. However, he went 8-4 by beating up on cupcakes, and losing to every good team they played. Many of the same people that blasted Dixon for that are acting like narduzzi went 11-1 and went to a premier bowl.

With the schedule this year, the best j can see is 8-4...and I would put my expectations at about 6 or 7 wins.

Who's acting like he went 11-1? Plus I don't think anyone thinks Narduzzi still has a lot of work ahead of him captain obvious.........

But thanks for trying to keep it real

A lot of people have already called narduzzi a great hire, and absolutely acted like Pitt had a 10+ win season.

For the record, I do think and hope narduzzi has Pitt On the right trajectory.

Think this is bad go on one of the nit boards. Even Geiger was gulping the dominator kool-aid after their spring game. Guess that 37-0 beat down over their second team has them thinking 9-3 or 10-2 now and even has them starting to think this offense could be as good as their 94 team.

If anything it will be entertaining until fall when they go up against actual defenses.

He was a great hire, but it doesn't mean there is work left to be done......

Oh and as an aside how does one act like a team won 10+ games?

well considering our last few hires, Narduzzi is a great hire.. Our last coach had the personality of a chair, the one before that left in middle of night because he hates the north and the one before that beat up his girlfriend in week 2 of his job.. So the bar isn't all that high..

I think the schedule is a little more difficult if only for the reason that the Miami and UNC games are on the road along with Clemson and Ok ST. If they lose all 4 of those, which is very possible, that makes winning every other game a must. Could they win every other game? Sure, but I wouldn't bet my life on it especially when most of those games last year came down to last second field goals to win the games. I expect Virginia, Va Tech, Georgia Tech(sleeper), and Syracuse to improve this year and be hard fought games.

Lets not forget this team was a 57 yard FG from being 9-4 last year, BUT
- it was also a 57 yard FG made against GT from a loss at GT
- An injured QB at Syracuse and last second FG over them
- Benefited from playing a Duke team without their QB and had a chance to put us in a huge hole had they not faked a FG at the goal line
- Benefited from playing a Louisville team that played the wrong QB and when they put the right one in it was too late.

Hell, the Virginia, YSU, and AKRON games were tight for most of the game. My point is this team was a few plays from 9-4 but a few plays from 4-8 and loses it's biggest difference maker it had and hopes another battles back from cancer to be one this year. I think 8-4 is asking a lot this year.

I think 8-4 is asking a lot this year.
all teams are only a few plays away from the proverbial win or loss, that's sports.. That is what seperates the good from the average and vice versa.. You can look back at any season in pitt and give yourself an extra 2 or 3 wins "if only" this happened, and of course you can do the same with losses.. That little break is the difference in most games, that is what makes sports fun.. Penguins were one misplay by the defense from having game 3 go into OT, steelers were one fumble away from beating the broncos in the playoffs.. Pitt hoops were one missed foul shot from being in final four, or Butler hoops were one bone headed play away and they'd have lost to pitt hoops and never made finals..

That's why I hate when fans play that game. We were only 1 or 2 plays away from being a great team.. Does it matter? a loss is a loss and a win is a win..every historic sporting event is defined by "one play" that could have easily gone the other way..

-Losing a player that scored 6 TD's for the entire season is Pitt's biggest difference maker? Goodness....

-James Conner scored 26 TD's when he was ACC player of the year.

Yes but there is a difference when there are 1 or 2 games that could go either way or 8 of them. The point is Pitt could very well win the same types of games this year or they could lose them. When looking at this years schedule, I keep that in mind prior to predicting 8 and 9 win seasons like some have based on blind faith.

You're right man losing Boyd does not hurt at all and James Conner is guaranteed to come back and be Pre-Cancer James Conner. You are really tough to take seriously. You would swear Pitt was Alabama the way you talk. If you do not think losing Boyd is going to hurt, you are nuts and not just for the 6TD's and 80 receptions that need replaced. It will change the way defenses defend the entire Offense.

rarely do things go wrong all the time. Sports, like life, has a way of balancing itself out. If a team gets screwed on all the breaks, it usually has to do more with the team than lady luck fisting them up the gazoo.. Good teams find a way to win, bad ones find a way to lose.. Sadly, ive seen more of the latter with pitt. That steelers season, 09 I think, every game was very close in 4th quarter and we always had that lucky turnover, that sack-fumble and we'd win by a field goal or a late TD.. We always seemed to get that lucky bounce, amazing how the good teams always seem to get that luck and bad ones don't..

-Ill bet Conner scores more than 6 TD's this year. For all the hype Boyd got, he sure didnt deliver.

-Hey look friend you can make your bets and Ill make mine. If Vegas wants to put the bar at 6 wins this year, Ill load the bank on Pitt.

Biggest concerns going into NFL on Boyd, by scouts:
• Really wasn’t a big play threat in 2015, averaging just 10.0 yards per catch on 94 receptions, with a season-long of 51. Did average 16.1 yards per catch in 2014, but again his season-long wasn’t earth shattering at 53 yards
• Big question on how well he can get separation downfield, caught just four of the 15 passes thrown his way on go-routes
• Ability to make people miss dropped in 2015. Forced nine missed tackles from 78 receptions in 2014, but that dropped to six from 94 this year
