John Hugley-I think we are starting to see a quality big man that has the ability to score. I don't think Big John had a great game by any means, but he was solid. 17 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists on 7-10 shooting in 24 minutes. Getting into better shape would do wonders for his game a year from now as his weight is still a significant problem for him on defense. Offensively, through 2 games, he has been further along than what I thought he would be.

Will Jeffress- I thought Will showed some real signs of life after all the people writing him off already as an 18 year old kid. Will wasn't great by any means but like Big John, he was fairly solid. 8 points on 2-4 shooting, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal ,3 turnovers. I thought his defense was better today and I thought he was active. Contributed in multiple areas.

Team Rebounding- Perhaps the biggest takeaway or positive in this game, we were +16 on the glass. A good chunk of the credit goes to Big John, Nate Santos, and Will Jeffress, but I thought the team did a solid job here. We still gave up easy second chance points for not properly sealing in the block, but it was much better than last game.

Biggest area of improvement- Team Communication. With a young team and 1 guard, obviously there are going to be major problems. But far too many times this game, players were getting double teamed, trapped, pinned in bad spots or on the line, and the rest of our team stood there watching. This is a coaching failure on Capel for not making correct adjustments and getting our team to talk during the game. We cannot have guys standing around when the ball handler is getting swallowed up by the defense possession after possession. The ball needs to move, better communication needs to be made, and less dribbling and more passing needs to take place.

Individual coaching needs-

Femi on the dribble drive. Almost every time on the dribble drive Femi was looking to score, not to pass. He needs to look to pass as the defense collapses on him as well. Capel never made any adjustment. Femi had a bad game and lost his composure. He needs to bounce back.

Getting Gueye away from the perimeter. He tries to do too much and is sloppy with the basketball. He should be playing closer to the basket. We clearly learned today if wasn't known previously he is not a wing and should never be playing like one and the ball needs to be in his hands less. He needs to remain on the inside and stop dribbling as much.

Other important stats

32 turnovers as a team.
34 points given up off turnovers
Pitt shot 58% from the line

As bad as that looks, a good number of our turnovers were just simple carelessness with poor communication. The backup PG had 4 turnovers in 20 minutes and none of the 4 should have happened. It was simple poor decision making with poor team communication. We have to talk on the floor so much more on both ends of the floor.

How is he going to recruit going forward. He is going to have to depend on transfers. He is on his last step.

Not to sound too negative, because I was/am a fan of Capel and hope he turns it around, but how can a high school senior look at this situation and want to come? Had Mintz kept his word and signed, then at least Capel had something to build on.

It was reported yesterday that Mintz plans to wait to see how things unfold. And that's really all you can ask for from a player as good as him.

I don’t think that accurately represents the core of what he said?

if that was all he was doing, he would not have made a point of reopening his recruitment.

Plus which how many kids open their recruitment and stay at the same school? And I mean coming from high school, not someone like Cockburn returning to where he already is.

Answer is very very few.

Yep, very unlikely.

And as andypappas alluded to in his post, recruiting HS seniors just seems like an unbelievable uphill task for Capel’s right now. Mintz de-committing just makes it so much steeper.

Watch Mintz end up being another 4 star letdown anyway ala Damon Wilson. Not sour grapes toward Mintz, I never blame anyone for making a very important life/business decision and Pitt is not a good life/business decision for him at this point, but we have had a pretty sketchy track record with our highest rated guys.

Wilson was ranked high, but his stock dropped his Sr. season. Mintz is the opposite. His rankings have improved over time, and he has performed well against good competition.

It seems to me, that often rankings take too much account of the team you play for.

That's going to be what finally ends the Capel nightmare. He is shit at handling players.
