VB: vs Cal - 10/18/24 Match Info

-Interesting that Coach Fisher started Bayliss instead of VVG in the 1st set. VVG started the 2nd and 3rd, with Bayliss getting very brief PT in the 3rd. When I saw that Bayliss was starting, I thought they would split time. I can only assume that Fisher wanted to give Bayliss what I'll call quality time, at the beginning of the match as opposed to much later vs. an overmatched opponent.
-While this was a dominant win, it's hard to gauge what to make of it, as Cal is not in the same league as Pitt. I can't help but get a sense that the team is not playing at it's peak for a few matches now. BC was not a particularly clean performance, SMU @ Pitt was back to what we've come to expect, but then the team looked mortal for half the match vs. SMU. My only conclusion is that it's impossible to stay very sharp -- all of the time. For example, while I haven't seen tonight's hitting %'s yet, Babcock and Stafford had multiple swings that I expected to wind up as kills, but were kept in play. Against a Stanford or Louisville, better make the most of those attempts. I can't help but remember how many attempts that SMU blocked, especially in the 4th and 5th sets.
-It's definitely a subjective thing, but I have a sense that the starters have lost a bit of the confidence from what I observed on the court earlier in what is a long season. Anyone else get the same "vibe?"
***I'm sure I'm not alone, but I can't stand when the production people cut to a camera behind the end line. Yes, it's a different look, but the viewer has no sense of depth and not a particularly good look of what's going on in the point.

I was thinking maybe VVG suspended for a set by Fish for something, but wasn't sure.

I appreciate your thoughts. Regarding the question......."Anyone else get the same "vibe?". I was at the match.....and I think Pitt played very well.....they were energized and were ready to take care of business....especially as it related to getting rid of that "bad taste in their mouths" from last weekend at SMU. The crowd was at capacity....over 2800 fans....and it was loud.....and they were into it. Some stats...
  • Cal barely cleared an average of 10 pts/set....clear domination by Pitt
  • Pitt hit .430....Cal was a -.048
  • Pitt 7 service aces....excellent
  • Pitt 13 blocks...excellent
  • Pitt had only 7 attack errors and 3 service errors....I think that may be the best they've been all season
  • I could continue.....but that's plenty to consider
Your point about "it's a long season" hits the bulls eye. We are now past the midpoint and there certainly is somewhat of a fatigue factor to consider....all the more so because they are under pressure to do something no other Olympic Sports team has ever done....win a National Championship. They needed this match to secure a reset of their excellence....I think they did that. Sunday is the big test. Stanford...probably the blueblood of all bluebloods is in town. The noise in the Fitz will be deafening. There is no doubt Fisher will have this team pumped and ready. Don't know if we'll win....but Pitt is in control of their own destiny with an opportunity to make a big statement....and then turn around and do it again next Friday at the Pete against Louisville. One way or another.....what a week it will be!

Yes -- excellent point about pressure (which I meant to address in my previous post). Perhaps it's more difficult to notice in person, but given player close-ups when streaming, I get a sense that at this point in the season, with all of the talk/publicity about being ranked #1 and even a national championship, there has to be more pressure on the players than early on when they were ranked 4th or 5th.

Also, glad to hear that it was loud at Fitzgerald last night, as you couldn't tell from the streaming broadcast. All a function of microphone location(s). I was at the Pitt-PSU game at the Pete and it was absolutely deafening there, especially when Penn St. was serving. "Hope that's the case on Sunday and on Friday vs. Louisville.

It was sold out last night - so a great crowd.

Not sure it was particularly loud as the match had zero tension . Cal could barely receive our serve let alone put any game pressure on us.

Our 2nd 6 would sweep Cal too. Our starters would literally never lose a set to Cal - at least not last night.

And Cal isn’t awful. At least on paper they came in with a winning record , a couple of ACC wins- even took a set from Purdue earlier in the season.

Fisher seemed to tinker a bit with rotations - at a couple points he had Bayless come into serve , taking Fairbanks off the floor- so we had Bayless, VBG, Olivia , Torrey , Klika , and a MB on the floor at the same time.

My seat is in the row in front of the seats given to family of the opponents. Last night, the mother of Cal’s #55 said they were hoping no one on their team got hurt during the match!

Yeah - we sit almost court side ( 2nd row ) opposite the benches - some of our hits are just flat violent - Babcock , Stafford , even Bayless , our middles — are putting some serious heat on their hits — there were several times I thought the Cal players were lucky not to break their nose or wrists … volleyball is a sneaky violent sport … takes guts to try to dig some of these hits

Fish wanted Bayless to get some starter minutes. Different feeling and vibe when you start a match versus come in after dominating 2 sets. I think she played both outside and opposite. In the 3rd set the played a 6-2. Again, just to change things up so that they can play a 6-2 if they need to. Fisher said so in the press conference afterwards.
