Virginia game

I agree - if you take all things into consideration, this is the biggest opener I can ever remember..

-against the division favorite.
-2 of the 3 next opponents will be big favorites against us.
-we have some recruiting momentum that will likely be squashed by a disappointing 1-3 start (I could definitely see some decommitments at that point).

It’s huge because you must be ready game one to open up the game plan. You can’t test the team with a bad OOC lower level team to get your feet wet.
Conference game first up sets a tone right away. A lot of questions can be answered and that isn’t a good thing for either team.

Having an easier game that doesn’t matter as much at least helps break in new players and wth a new OC, give him time too.

Majors II opener on the road at southern Mississippi. It was a night game. Pitt won.

But I could be wrong.
Lol, yep. Tumulty has big game. Was so psyched for the following weeks home opener against Hokies another night game.

Think we gave up 500 rushing yards.

Neither is ranked the loser will still have a shot at winning the division. Nobody outside the two tiny fan bases cares. This, it isn't a game with anything at stake.

I remember that Southern Miss game. National TV. Majors was back. The new uniforms were a throwback to the glory days. It was a great game and a gutsy win with several young players shining. Everything after was so heartbreaking.

I was at the night game with Virginia Tech the following week. I remember commenting that I thought they had Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly in their backfield. Good lord did they pound us. That’s when you knew Beamer was building a great program.

UVA is picked by many to win the division. Loser of this game is two behind after the first week. It’s of huge importance.

I remember Johnny ran some excellent pick plays in that game...

Go Pitt.

This is a big game, but Wanny’s debut game against ND was pretty massive. ABC primetime Saturday night. Charlie Weis was debuting for ND. Pitt was ranked.

If say it ranks right next to the ND each had diffrent reasons.. ND game for coaches.. rankings the teams etc. But losing to ND game 1 wouldn't make or break a season. VA is big considering it's a conference game 1. We are coming off as coastal champs where we had to knock off a VA team ranked on the road last year who was in the driver's seat, so they will be ready and like ND losing to VA may not break the season it would hurt more as far as conference play goes.

FSU game, well it was big because it was a labor day game, night, first ACC game against a high powered program, and Tyler Boyds first game. that's it for me not one moment before the game did I think we would win so I wasn't hyped about that. Especially since thier was Runningback issues and no clear cut and we had a converted DE as our backup at the time didn't excite me much... wonder what ever happend to that DE turned RB guy hmmm haha

Was going to basically say the same. The start last year was rough, but at least they had the GT and Syracuse wins to hang their hats on. These boards will be a dark place if they end week 4 @ 1-3 (0-1).

Va game critical for another reason. It will be a major clue to the age old question: Does Narduzzi know what he is doing? Too many examples out there that he doesn't though there are plenty that say he does. Beat Va and for at least until the PSU game we will be free to believe he does (if they lose to Ohio, well, no reason to go there).

Kind of more reminds me of the @Utah opener more.
A win keeps alot of doors open.
A loss probably means a long season.

ND first wanny game.

FSU first game in ACC.

I think the UVA game is huge this year but I am not quite sure it's our biggest opener. It might be, but I dont know how you quantify it until after the fact.

Keith Jackson came to broadcast the ND game, that's how you knew it was big. He was pretty much retired at that point but would do a few really big games. Of course Wanny laid a massive egg.

Yeah, this is a decently important game. ACC opponent and a win helps set the tone for the season.

yeah, I remember that damn game. the cubs pitcher had a big game for them, Goofy WR ND had..

Speaking of cubs....I believe we got the pirates to move to a 135 start and I think the day consisted of college gameday on the north lawn, followed by the pirates, followed by primetime abc game.

The 1st goal is to win the coastal which they did. Pitt has a very good in conference record since joining the ACC. We put 52 on VT last year and I don't know how many total yards but it was a butt whuppin

A 2-game lead in week one is not that big of a deal in our division. Nobody is going to win 10 games. Plus, nobody cares about our division regardless of who wins it. Our division usually sends an unranked team to the ACC championship to serve as mere fodder for Clem or FSU. It may be big to you and a couple thousand others and that's cool but nobody else cares. There likely won't even be 50K in the stands.

This could be the worst post of the summer. I mean that

For once, it would be nice to be four games into the season and be 3-1.
It'll be tough. Most of us here if we had to guess would probably go with 2-2.

But for that, there's always 2020. First 4 opponents:

Miami (OH)
@ Marshall
Richmond
Notre Dame

Followed by @ FSU, @ Miami (FL) and @ UNC, however.

I'm not quite ready to worry over 2020. With Pitt's luck, Marshall will be a CFP bowl team by then.

Goofy 2-sport, 2-time All-American--Jeff Samardzija who could have picked either sport to play at the highest level.

We could use some goofballs like that at Pitt.
Great athlete. Not sure why he’s goofy. Just looked weird but yeah, great at two sports so I wish I was half as goofy as him.

Coastal has sent an unranked team twice in 14 games.
But agree this may be the weakest ever to start.

It is huge because it sets the stage in the Coastal right out of the shute. I expect a big year out of Pitt and would not like to see it ruined in August.
