** Back in the mid-2000’s, perhaps some of you may remember the song “How Do You Like Me Now?” that was played at the Pete after most of our many home wins.

** Many liked the song, especially because when you heard it, it meant the Panthers were victorious. We heard that song a lot.

** But there were a few, among which I was one, who hated that damn crappy country song. I recall many threads on the PantherLair suggesting any number of songs that could be adopted to be played at the Pete instead. These were fun times, debating the best song for Panther wins.

** Fast forward about 15 years later to the PantherLair game thread tonight. A few of us joined together for fun (or silly) times aimed at getting through this game, offering up some appropriate song and lyric ideas for our current Panthers.

** Truth to told, none of this was really very fun at all. Mostly, deep down, it was sad. Which of course was appropriate for one of, if not the most sad game in this mostly discouraging season.

** Before I make this next comment, I want to be 100% clear that by no means do I actually think what I’m going to say to actually true by any stretch. But today, Heather Lyke said: “This team is dialed in and unselfish. They believe in Coach Capel, he’s not lost the team by any stretch.” It’s almost as if they played today to make the point that this wasn’t true.

** There were so many things wrong today, but I will start with something incredibly startling, Not one Panther player grabbed an offensive rebound. Not one. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that. I think that is statistically almost impossible.

** At the very least, it points to a complete lack of effort, poor offensive execution, and even worse shot selection. Even for a really bad offensive team, this was a really bad offensive performance.

** We stunk on the other end too, as Virginia Tech was able to score plenty with ease without the completely sizzling shooting we saw in the last game's first half.

** I also saw some of the worst hedge defense the Panthers have played all year long. They were completely lost on when and how to double team.

** It wasn’t on a hedge, but later in the game, I watched John Hugley make one of the worse defensive decisions I’ve seen in quite some time. He played off of his man at the wing on the three point line to help on a face up player in the corner. By the time he almost got there, the Va Tech corner man just passed right back to John’s man for a wide open three. He missed it, but I just shook my head.

** I’m not going to pile on any more. Instead I will give compliments once again to Mo for fine effort and even better shooting. And Femi didn’t exactly play well, but he at least made a showing. That’s the end of the list of the Panthers who deserve mention.

** I also don’t necessarily want to pile on Coach Capel. But it didn’t even feel like his heart was in this one either. He waited to call his first time out at the end of a 16-0 run. I don’t recall him calling another.

** Through most of his four years, we’ve seen true passion, if not excessive exasperation, from Jeff during most poor Panther performances. I saw none of that today. Maybe he’s just out of answers and he knows it. Maybe he knows more than that.

** From my end, I will continue to suggest what should be Capel’s fate will be completely clear by the time this year is over. For even some of Capel more ardent supporters, it my already be clear now.

** I’m not sure if there a song that sums all of my thoughts. But there is a General Daniel Butterfield tune that crossed my mind.

That song was played at practically every home game at the end of the game and even though the song sucked musically to me, it was still fun to hear it because it meant we won again. It happened a lot back then.

I'm not going to pile on Capel any longer either. It's obvious this is way over his head and he's not head coaching material at all. His fate, I believe, is already sealed. He's a sad case and I am starting to feel sorry for him. He needs to leave and get on with his life's work. There is more to life than basketball.

Kudos to Mo and Femi for at least putting up an effort and doing their parts. The rest of the team was both unprepared and lacked any kind of effort at all. If they all transferred, it would be a start and they wouldn't be missed all that much. With the probability of them not winning a game the rest of the year, who cares?

The Song Remains the Same

Thanks DT 1. On thing I will say in defense of the players, I don't see much selfish play
2. He really looked beat down if you watched the press conference

I think that's very fair about the selfishness. Good point. They are not selfish players, but our offense is certainly built on one on one play as opposed to sharing the ball.

"The End" was already quoted in the game thread I referred to.

"How Do You Like Me Now" by Toby Keith? I absolutely despise country music, but I actually kinda like that song. Doesn't really seem to be the best fit to play after a basketball win though.

What do they play now? They play "All I Do Is Win" at UVA.

Would love to hear it now.

Miss seeing the zoo with their hands up before the game too to All I Do is Win.
That song reminds me of the Tray/Ashton/Brad Era Panthers which was great but I have even fonder memories of the Eras before that with BK/Page/CK/Troutman and then Levance/Blair/Young too.

After the loss on Wednesday, Capel has a massive home game vs an NC State program that we somehow have not beaten in 7 years. There are 1st graders who were not born the last time Pitt beat the definition of mediocrity in ACC Basketball.

Pitt looked bad tonight. All things considered, it really was one of the 5 or so worst Pitt performances I've ever seen. For those rooting against Capel, these are the types of performances that 3-17 could get him fired. There's a difference between 3-17 and fighting and clawing and being in most games and just never getting off the bus. This was bad.

How about Pitt scoring only 5 1st Half points besides the 12 Gueye scored. That, in itself has to be some sort of record. And this VT team is more of an NDish 3 point shooting team. And we made them look like 2018 UVa on D and 2009 Pitt on the glass. Its hard to figure out how we can look this bad. I know you're joking but it really did seem like Capel read the article today and said, "oh shit, I might have to coach here next year and I REALLY want that buyout." Can you imagine the fortune awaiting that man? Whether its this year or next, Jeff Capel will hit the Pitt Basketball Lottery and live large on Heather's mistake.

Positive point: we were up 5-0 over four minutes into the game
Negative point: this team is back to field house days pre Miller smith gore days. 1986?
realistic point: we still have the facilities and are in a league where we can bring in talent and find a way to compete.

Best Capel could do was benching the laziest players on occasion
The switch every screen was beyond D was frankly embarrassing to watch
This team doesn’t have many options - so playing those with effort is the only option

Hugley and Horton should ride the bench for a game or two , except for foul trouble and giving others breathers

play Jeffress , Santos, olidapo, and Collier instead

getting blown out every game in February for a 4th year - there’s not much needed to be said
It’s over Johnny , get ‘em a body bag

Also, my song is "Reason to Believe", the last song on Bruce Springsteen 's Nebraska album. A bleak song with some brightness after and entire album of sad.

Two starters didn't score
Eze really shouldn’t count- he only plays so
Much because this team f&(k$ the dog so hard [*kicks garbage can* “It’s effin’ embarrassing !!!]
Burton was just Terrible today

I’ll pile on one more thing -
We have a coaching staff of former D1 head coaches - which tells you plenty how awful college hoops can be that not a single one of them seems remotely as capable of teaching any kind of basic basketball than my 8th grade head coach and assistant .

i mean good lord how damned Incompetent is the lot of them - when a part time middle school coaches with full time jobs were actually able to teach us 5 different set plays on offense and 3 defenses , enough to win a championship with not a single D1 athlete on the team ?

Wow DT, this was exactly what I was going to write!! Good job.

If Capel were to return, I feel like he needs a complete makeover, like becoming a pressing/trapping team and recruit transfers to that. Nobody really presses anymore, not even WVU. Or maybe become primarily a zone team.

Lol. Yes. In his make or break year he’s just going to totally change his style!!!

Why not just hire a new coach who’s style you want?

Because that's currently too expensive.

I don't think Capel will change his style and I realize Huggy is a HOF'er but WVU had some lean years and Huggy decided something needed to change so he started Press Virginia. Of course, he can coach.

So is he returning or not? Your earlier post in this thread alludes to you now thinking he could get fired. Which is it?

I said a few days ago

3-17: 50/50
4-14: 70%
5-15: 90%
6-14: 100%

But of course this also depends on who returns. He cant go 5-15 and lose all his starters, for example. The decision comes down to:

a) his record this year
b) outlook for next year (ie returning players)
c) how much money Heather can spend on a new coach.

Let's say for example, Heather asks Gallagher and he agrees to go as high as $6 million/year to dig us out, then she can make an offer to an Oats, Pikiell, Will Wade (maybe wants an easier conference and scenery change), etc, then that makes her decision easier. People don't want to hear this, but its risky as hell to pay Capek 8 figures to go hire the Cleveland State coach

Remember when they would show the team's all time home record at The Pete after every win? When did that end?

PITT HAS THE MONEY. PITT HAS THE MONEY. ITS NOT 8 FIGURES. ITS NOT 8 FIGURES.

You refuse to answer this. How is it not 8 figures? He has $15 million left on his contract. Even if his contract states that his buyout is 67% of remaining money, that's still $10 million. And these buyouts are typically 75% to 90%. So, tell me how you know what his contract states. Heck, it could be $12 or $13 million.
