Volleyball v Nebraska (Final Four)

Our serving has become a little soft since we are missing so many. Nebraska getting great swings off our serving

This was the biggest difference between the teams. After the first set, Nebraska’s serving got progressively better. That made it harder for us to get good passes and we didn’t get nearly as many chances for kills as in the first set.

I thought the turning point in momentum in the match was the second point in set 2. Lund served and we won the first point to go up 1-0. Then she had a service error on point 2. As we started making more service errors, as a couple of others have posted, we became very conscious of the errors and started serving up cream puffs. That made it easy for them to side out. You win a hard earned point, and then it’s powderpuff serve…easy pass…good set…kill. It’s very deflating.

Their serving just kept getting better and better. And, their defense was much better than ours. This was not a match where we lost focus, as we have in other matches. After the first set, they were just significantly better.

It was a terrific year. Great coaching job by Fisher. Amazing how far he has taken this team without a recruiting class in the top 25. Hopefully, this exposure will help our recruiting in 2023 and beyond. We aren’t going to have a top class in 2022 with just one recruit, but he already is recruiting hard for 2023 and 2024.

Nothing for the players to hang their heads about. They had a wonderful season!

Can anyone share what key players we will likely lose from this team? I don't know if they get a COVID year and who is illegible, assume so. Thanks.

Lund, Ndee, Levers, and Member Meneh are all out of eligibility

Starks, Lockwood, and Gray all have another possible year, I believe, as 4th year seniors this season.

Serving errors and a libero who cannot receive a serve. Unbelievable a program at Pitt's level cannot get a libero. Service errors have been a problem all season and it bit them in the a** today. FOCUS was totally lost after the first set.

At the end of the 3rd set she has one less kill and one less error on two fewer chances than Member-Meneh.
Agree. Menes had a tough night, but I think Nebraska focused big time on her.

That said, I think Akron and Lund were the weak links in most games I watched.

Every serve of ours is a layup. Every serve of theirs we are flopping around the court. Browske is unplayable at this point.
Certainly not as good as theirs, but the announcer gave her kudos throughout the match.

Maybe they figured us out?

Hoping they find a libero in the transfer portal.

Glad I made the drive to see the best Pitt VB season in school history. But man, Browske was very bad. I’m surprised it took Fisher until the 4th set to try Emily, even tho she hadnt played in quite a while. All the poor serve receiving basically killed our offense, and obviously Nebraska had the taller, more athletic athletes being a B10 school. Was a cool atmosphere though.

Nonetheless, Lund and co have left their mark on the program. It will be interesting to see how the team looks next year.

They mentioned last night that Rodriguez committed to Nebraska as a 14 year old HS freshman. Also that Nebraska and Wisconsin have top 5 or top 10 recruiting classes every year.

Women’s volleyball recruiting and womens soccer recruiting are different from other sports. Players are recruited early and commit early, especially in soccer. The other big difference from other sports is that high school play has less influence over recruiting. It’s primarily based on their play for youth teams. Some soccer players don’t even play high school soccer. More consideration is given to HS by volleyball programs…sometimes. Still, if a really good player is stuck in a bad HS team, her youth team play will be the critical factor. No offense, but in OA little weight is given to HS play in either sport, in California though, much more weight is given to HS volleyball programs because they are substantially better.

That is the big reason why Randy Waldrum is taking longer to rebuild the womens soccer program than it took Vidovich to rebuild the Mens team. Womens Soccer doesn’t depend nearly as much on foreign players. Until a few years ago, wonens soccer was almost invisible in Europe. That is changing but right now it isn’t a major source for college players. When Waldrum became the Pitt coach, most of the best high school players who would sign with colleges in the next three years were already committed.

Fisher faced the same issue. He has been able to build a powerhouse without many, if any, top 100 recruits. But, the recognition Pitt has been getting has started opening doors for him. Covid shutdowns have delayed the recruiting sites from producing meaningful lists of Top 100 underclass recruits. But, I believe the two California players he has recruited so far for 2023 will likely both be Top 100 players. One is in the powerhouse HS program in the state. She probably is no better than the 4th best player on that team, but they have at least six Div 1 prospects, if not more.

The top prospect on that team, who many think is the top junior in the country, is an outside hitter who committed to Stanford in 9th grade. She is Jewish but playing at a Catholic school for the quality of the volleyball program. (Only 1 of their top 6 players is Catholic.) Like QB Josh Rosen, she lives in Pacific Palisades and commutes to the school. But, Bishop Montgomery is less than 20 miles from her home; Rosen went to another county and a school 60 to 90 minutes away depending on traffic.

Her parents both are doctors. She wants to be a doctor. Stanford was pretty much a lock.

The second best player on the team has been committed to UCLA since 10th grade. The player who committed to Pitt committed before her junior year. All play for the same youth volleyball team.

She probably is not the best player Fisher has recruited for 2023. That would be an outside hitter who was 6’4 at the time she verballed and reportedly now is 6’6. Frankly, it is likely Fisher hopes she is done growing. Our outside hitters have been undersized. She will end that. She also plays for a powerhouse league program and a top high school program.

Even with the loss, the exposure we got from ESPN and the belated recognition from the volleyball community that Pitt is a power should help Fisher start landing Top 25 and even Top 10 classes. But that will be in 2023 and later. We just need not to fall off the end of the Earth before then.

It was mentioned during the broadcast, they asked Dan Fisher what his highest rated recruiting class was since he has been at Pitt, and his answer was "none". Because in volleyball, they stop ranking classes outside of the top 25, and Pitt has never had one ranked. They have built this program through development, transfers, and like mike412 has stated, hopefully we start seeing the fruits of that coming through actual recruiting to continue to help build this program and keep it at a high level.
