[/B]Rivals Radio continues to grow[/B]

Each day we try to post the highlights of the 10:00 AM to Noon show that Bill King hosts on Rivals Radio. Rivals.com has expanded beyond that basic schedule. Some of it is available on Sirius satellite radio while other programs are only available on the Internet. My hope is that the number of hours will continue to grow and that all of it will eventually be available on Sirius Channel 123. Here is a brief look at the current schedule.

Monday- Noon to 1:00 PM- Big 12 blitz- tape delay on Sirius
Tuesday – Noon to 1:00 PM – Big Ten blitz- tape delay on Sirius
Wednesday – Noon to 1:00 PM – ACC blitz- tape delay on Sirius
Thursday – Noon to 1:00 PM - SEC blitz - tape delay on Sirius
Friday- Noon to 1:00 PM Recruiting Blitz – tape delay on Sirius

Thursday 5:00PM –6:00 PM - Airing it out- Internet only

Sunday – 11:00 AM –1:00 PM – College wrap up show- Live on Sirius Satellite

It is my hope that later this fall, perhaps as we get close to the basketball season, Rivals Radio will add an additional hour to cover the Big East Conference.

Rivals Radio is trying to have Dick Butkus on early next week to talk about the Montour football program so all of you Parkway Conference fans stayed tuned. Montour Coach Lou Cerro owes me if we pull this off.

Roaming around the dial

Last week Chris Peak from the Panthertlair.com appeared on WEAE-AM (the ESPN station) on their Pitt pre-game show. He is scheduled to be on again Friday night prior to the Ohio University game. He will scheduled to be on around 7:20 PM.

The University of Pittsburgh recently announced that all of their football and basketball games on Sirius Satellite Radio.

A few final thoughts on the Notre Dame game

Both Pitt and Notre Dame fans were energized with the hiring of a new head football coach. Unfortunately there can only be one winner and there must be a loser. It simply is not fair to judge Dave Wannstedt’s program based on a few games. The potential for a very rocky start existed with an opener with Notre Dame and a trip to Nebraska on the early schedule.

Pitt got caught in a very bad match-up. Notre Dame had a talented, veteran offensive line. Pitt played five freshmen up front and senior Thomas Smith did not get into the game until it had been decided. Coach Wannstedt put together a very conservative game plan. When Paul Rhoads first joined the Pitt staff his defense resembled the “Blizburgh defense”. The Pitt staff may want to help the inexperienced defensive line by blitzing a little more often. It is risky but until these guys grow up a little they may need help putting pressure on the quarterback. Sure you can recruit bigger and better players but many of those playing Saturday night will be in the program for the next FOUR years. As Coach Wannstedt said at his press conference, you must “coach them up” if you are going to improve this year and next.

We were also worried about the No. 3 receiver on offense. Someone will have to step up or wide receiver Greg Lee will be double teamed every time Pitt is in an obvious passing situation. One of the young wide receivers must get better or Pitt will struggle at times offensively.

We watched a replay of the game. Tyler Palko’s hand was hurt when the score was still14-10. He was not very effective for the rest of the game. His right hand looked like he was wearing a baseball mitt. Fortunately it does not appear he suffered a lasting injury.

Some recruiting thoughts

Last weekend Chris Peak and I attended the Woodland Hills-Gateway game. Some think that 18 Division 1 prospects played in this game. Over the years my wife has accompanied me to countless little league, high school, college and pro games. My wife turned to me at one point and said, “Many of the players look like college players.” It did not take an expert to figure this one out. Hopefully you have had a chance to see the photo slide show from this game. In addition the Notre Dame site from the Rivals network was there. They have video of Darrin Walls and an audio interview from the locker room. You can find them in their article entitled “Walls turns in dominant performance”. (See the “Ticker”).

Recruiting should slow a little. September 1st began a period when colleges were again permitted to contact recruits. They will now all start jockeying to lineup “official visits” for players they are interested in. Pitt had a group in Labor Day weekend. Other schools now get their chance.

We still like Pitt’s chances with defensive tackle Jared Martin. Wide receiver/defensive back Tamarcus Porter from Pahokee is also a real possibility. Ricky Gary is a “talker”. He will work on his high school teammate. Pitt needs to put together a few wins to show recruits they are on track to go to bowl game for the 6th year in a row. A few wins will get the recruiting momentum going again.

We like Pitt by a score of 31-13 over Ohio University this week.
