A little football recruiting
With the limited number of scholarships available Pitt figures to take only one tight end this year. At the end of the day it should be Central Catholic’s John Pelusi but there are other possibilities. Pitt has offered Richard Quinn of Maple Heights and James Dray of Bergen Catholic. They have also offered defensive end Kyle Newell from Bethlehem Catholic who is capable of playing tight end. Jose Cruz and Scott Uziel have both been to the Pitt summer camp and remain possibilities although they have not yet been offered.
We tried to talk to TE Richard Quinn of Maple Heights this week but he was in Alabama visiting relatives. He has ties to the south and his coach, Jeff Rotsky, indicated that he is now getting interest from some of the SEC schools. Oklahoma also recently asked for film.
Richard Quinn is in the database as a wide receiver but his coach tells us he is now 6’ 3” 225 pounds. Coach Rotsky indicated some schools are recruiting him as a H-Back. He said that Pitt, however, looks at him as a tight end. If Pitt does not end up with John Pelusi, Quinn could be next in line.
Maple Heights sent both Richard Quinn (6’ 3” 225) and DE Terrico Marshall (6’ 3 240) to the Pitt summer camp. Coach Rotsky describes his defensive end as a “beast”. He has academic issues, however, so he has no offers. Coach Rotsky feels that if he gets “A’s or B’s” in his summer school courses that he is currently taking, that Pitt will offer Terrico Marshall.
We believe Pitt will take two wide receivers this year and have prepared a separate article on the dozens or so candidates that now have offers outstanding. Please check out this article on our Home Page for an update.
When should a recruit commit? The best answer might be is soon as he is comfortable with his decision. Would he still go there if a knee injury ended his career? Would he still go there if the coach is fired?
Pitt received the 6th commitment this week from running back Irvan Brown. Quite frankly we thought he was going to commit two or three weeks ago and were a little puzzled at the delay. Pitt also has a commitment from running back LaRod Stephens from Johnstown and that probably means Central Catholic’s Eugene Jarvis and Duquesne’s Shane Brooks will need to look elsewhere. In Brook’s case, Virginia now has 18 verbals so Virginia and Pitt might be both be closed to him.
We heard recently from the brother of C.B West’s David McClain. There had been rumors that his brother might reopen the recruiting process but he tells us Dave remains firmly committed. Dave had attended the Pitt summer camp a year ago and we are told Pitt was high on his list before he decided on Maryland.
Harry spoke to OL Kurt Mattes from Wyoming Valley West this week and he indicated he hoped to make an unofficial visit to Pittsburgh this month.
