Watching the replay of the 1975 Rose Bowl

It's clear that Dorsett deserved the Heisman in 75 as well. Archie Griffin was not better than TD no way! H2P!
Of course not, but in 75, O$U was better than Pitt, and that always plays into awards like that. Pitt hadn't really reestablished itself as a power yet. That would come the following year.

and tosu played no one except Michigan back then, and pretty much today too. While Pitt played one of toughest independent schedules perennially. So bust Archie did it vs. inferior competition.

In my opinion it was Fitz, no question. The guy who probably should have won the Heisman in 1975 was Ricky Bell from USC
Since TD ran for 303 against ND and that record still stands today Dorsett should of gotten the Heisman. If the Heisman is awarded to the player who means the most to his team and is outstanding then Dorsett in 75 and Fitz in 03. JMO

Actually folks, remember, that was the 75 Rose Bowl, but it was the 1974 season. Griffin did have a better season as a Jr than he did as a Sr.

That was really cool watching parts of that game. Now that is the replays of past games I like to see. Not Alabama/Auburn from 2020. Show us some history and some of college's great players. That is interesting.

Also interesting to me, is Ohio State had an athletic, black QB, who made things happen with his legs. Which obviously is common place now, but unless you were running a Wishbone or Veer offense then, never would see that.

He won it in '75 because he won it in '74. He won it '74 because of the Big 10 and Woody Hayes worship in the media. He should never have won either. And he couldn't carry TDs jock strap in any year.

AGAIN......THIS WAS THE 1974 SEASON!!! You guys know the Rose Bowl is played on Jan 1st. The NEXT Year after the season. So the 1975 Rose Bowl would actually be part of the 1974 season.

If you watched that game, you would have understood this, because Rickey Bell was not yet the focus of the SC offense.

My sincere apologies. So change my post to he didn't deserve it that year and didn't deserve it the next either. Mixing up his junior year with his senior in no way changes the point.

Yeah the O$U qb was pretty good and slick. Griffin should've never won either Heisman.

I just posted that wbr, great minds think alike ;)

NBCSN showed the 1984 Orange Bowl late on Friday night, watched the first half then DVR’ed the rest. Great game and Osborne going for 2 even though a tie would give him a National Championship was ballsy but insane. Also Don Criqui was the announcer and brought up that Tuner Gill’s only loss in his 30 starts was in VERY controversial game in State College the previous season, he really emphasized VERY.

NBC’s library of college football besides Notre Dame games are old Rose, Orange and Fiesta Bowls, hopefully they show more!

Mike McKloskey catches a pass a full yard out of bounds on the 2 yard line late in the game to set up the winning score. Yes VERY controversial. The next year future Steeler Preston Gothard is called out of the back of the end zone on a catch that was totally inbounds to cost Alabama the win. That play was called by the father of Mike Guman, an ex nit RB. They came out with a great Tshirt that said Beaver Stadium. It had the outline of a football field with the side line bubbled out inside the 5 yard line and bubbled in at the back of the end zone. Classic

As far as Osborne going for 2, I never saw that as anything but the right thing to do. As Danny Marino said to Jackie Sherrill before the infamous pass to John Brown " we didn't come here to tie the game".

Actually, he did deserve to win it as a JR. He had more yards, ypc and 1 less TD than his competitors. He had more total yards also, by 200 yards over Anthony Davis and Joe Washington.

So, yes I hate Ohio State too, but Archie Griffin really did deserved the Heisman in 1974. Now in 1975? Anyone of Rickey Bell, Chuck Muncie and Dorsett would have been better choices.

Tony didn't deserve the Heisman in 74. That was his worst year. Remember, that was the year USC came in and held him to 59 yards, while Anthony Davis ran over the Panthers for 149. That game pretty much ended any chance that TD could win the Heisman that year. Tony was also hurt badly the next year by Pitt getting stomped at Oklahoma. The game was so lopsided that I was looking for Dave Hart, or Carl DePasqua on the sideline. Tony had 17 yards, while Joe Washington ran wild. Pitt played a very tough schedule that year, but the problem was that other than ND, they lost those tough games. Pitt had 5 games where the world was watching, and we lost 4 of them. It's hard to win the Heisman with a mediocre team (unless you played for ND). The next year, the team took care of business, and the trophy came to Tony.
