the UFC 170lbs title. Another wrestler wins in MMA. I remember him winning NCAA for OSU in Okla City when I was there with Thom.

The next year he lost to Perry from Iowa. Great match.

Most of the top ufc fighters have had success at the collegiate wrestling level and that will continue to grow in my opinion. Heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez ASU 4th place is his highest
Jon jones I believe won a juco title in wrestling
Chris weidman finished 3rd as his highest at Hofstra
You mention Johny Hendricks
And I'm on my phone but the list could go on.

And those are ufc title holders that's why I names them.

I am not a big fan of the UFC...too many submission holds allowed. But, it seems to me that particularly in the lighter weights expertise in Brazilian jujitsu is more important than having a wrestling background.

Re: Agreed

Brazilian juijitsu has an emphasis on submission holds so it is a must have. I was referring to the type of athlete. Wrestlers seem to pick the juijitsu skills very quickly.

Re: Agreed

The wrestles have adapted to jiu jitzu much more then they have adapted to wrestling. Phil Davis although a psu guy has done quite well on the ground. But Frankie Edgar was able to use his wrestling quite well to have success. And yes I am a big mma fan and will be at the event in Orlando in April can't wait for it. Along with wrestling judo is also taking stride for takedowns especially in clinch situations.

Re: Agreed

The issue is wrestling does a great job of developing balance, speed, coordination etc but does not allow holds which go against the joint. Juijitsu has a lot of holds against the joint so wrestlers have to come to that camp. What I was trying to say is that wrestling gives a great foundation for people to move to MMA and learn those skills.

Completely agree I like watching the championships and then hearing that name later down the road whether its UFC Bellator WSOF always interesting to see where these wrestlers end up and nice that they may be able to make a nice living like some other collegiate athletes in basketball, football, and baseball, maybe its not as good but an opportunity to pretty much continue what they love to do.
