Well, we lost our best player today

The hope is we pay to keep the good players instead of wasting money on 3-9 players. I'm kinda glad Hayes left. I've been saying for months we are spending too much on marginal football players. Now, lets go get a wing scorer to replace Bub. We can get a very good guard for the same price as a 3-9 defensive lineman.

Still not getting this logic. Boston College was 3-9 in 2022. Zay Flowers was still taken in the first round and had a good rookie season in the NFL. This isn't basketball, and one dude - or even five dudes - can't put an entire team on his shoulders. Again, 50 or more guys are being regularly rotated in these games. And I'm pretty sure Texas and Miami have proven you can actually have a lot of talent and still suck.

Well, we lost our three best defensive linemen. I keep hearing that they're not good. Okay. Then doesn't that make it even worse, if we can't afford to keep mediocre players from getting picked off? Imagine if we ever get actual talent (according to those who say Okunlola, Jules, and Hayes aren't any good).
Who said anything about jules or okunlola? You said hayes was going to be drafted. That is what i responded to

.and yes it sucks we cant keep players around even average ones like hayes

I don't think some of you realize how valuable these d-linemen are. I guarantee Dayon Hayes goes to a better team and starts. It's not even debatable. He led the ACC in pressure rate last season.

But hey, we got a dude from Clemson who was taken after a walk-on in the Spring Draft and who Peak said on his YouTube thing had a bad spring. We're all set!

What would BC's record be without Flowers?

If he lead in pressures AND had double digit sacks id say you are right. He was a liability in the run game and VERY rarely got home. He is very average.

You don't think teams were shifting their protection to account for him when we had the great white hope Nate Temple coming off the other side?

And narduzzi counters with twists, blitzs and stunts. Narduzzi's scheme is a part of the reason the d line has been dominant. Yes we have had tremndous talent but it is also schemed for constant pressure and that can make john morgan look good.

How is that the point, though? "We can be 3-9 with or without you, so we might as well just let you go" would be a good plan if you were actually content being 3-9 forever. I assume most teams are not.

Yep. I predicted 5-7 before the Spring Game and I am still predicting 5-7. We bad. And Hayes doesnt add any extra wins so why waste the money. I'm dumping everything into basketball until Narduzzi brings me some players worth spending on.

Like Okunlola?

I mean, this is football. It's not a patchwork pickup game very year like basketball is. You need to retain good players, because their production helps attract new good players.

You can't keep looking at every single individual player in a vacuum and say it's no big loss. Because if we had Hayes AND Jules AND Okunlola, yeah - that is the difference between two or three wins.

Could be worse. Could be Louisville.

Apparently they can’t cover all the NIL promises and there is a mass exodus taking place right now. Rumor is players aren’t even showing up for the weight room sessions in protest.

Hayes finally played to his potential in final against BC. Showed some flashes before that. Seemed like a very loyal guy so this is surprising. It's a loss but really there should be people behind him that are just as good if not better. That's where the problem is....being in a bind losing a type of player like Hayes.

There's no one even remotely close to him who is behind him, unfortunately. We have 7 defensive ends, and like 4 of them are freshmen. We basically lost three out of our top four (two to the portal and one to injury) and then moved two guys inside on top of that (neither had been all that effective outside anyway). So we're down 5 d-ends.

It's just the fact that we lost guys on both ends of the spectrum that depresses me.

A hometown kid who stuck it out until year six... poof. So much for the "we need to get older" strategy.

A young talent who had barely even began to blossom... poof. So much for the "let's do it on the recruiting trail" strategy.

I feel more defeated than anything. I'm not mad, and I don't blame anyone. Just sucks.
With the way the NIL and transfer rules are currently structured, Pitt is destined to be a farm program for bigger schools. Either Alabama, Ohio State, and Southern Cal get them out of high school or Pitt finds the gems and develops them...and then loses them to the wild west "everyone is a free agent 24/7" rules of the NIL.

No other way to put it, it sucks. There's nothing in this system for fans of a program like ours. Either the rules change or Pitt football - and every other team like it (and there are a lot of them) - gets drowned in the tub.

Yeah we're screwed until there is at least some type of structure (like contracts) put in place.

Basketball is bad enough, but anybody can beat anybody in basketball so you can always get lucky with some mish-mash of mid-major transfers. But a football program just takes too long to build. It's like we keep trying to rebuild a straw house when there are 50 big bad wolfs lurking around it. Just not possible to succeed right now. We have some potential young talent, but we'll lose them too as soon as they flash.

Dude you cant have it both ways. You say watch Hayes go to a better team and starts, then say hey they got a dude from Clemson taken after walking on.

Is Clemson not way better than Pitt? We got a player from a team you and everyone else claim is a big time program. I dont care if he was a walkon, if Clemson can sign him, so can Pitt. You tell me what major program Hayes will go to and start? You are talking out the side of your neck.

The asinine comments an statements that some of you posters make is stupid.

Ummm, what? The dude we got from Clemson was more than likely given a police escort to the airport from them. He obviously wasn't ever going to play there, as is evidenced by the fact that our own players drafted a walk-on before him in the Spring Game (try to keep it this straight; I didn't say he was a walk-on. I know this is difficult for you.).

Hayes, on the other hand, will likely end up on a team that is better than Pitt in 2024 and he will start for that team.

So, I'd rather have Hayes. Is that easy enough to follow?

Clemson doesn’t lose a ton of guys to the portal, and doesn’t get many either.

If you’re leaving Clemson that quickly, it’s probably a red flag.

It doesn't matter if it's the point or not. The point is he is nowhere close to being irreplaceable.

LOL... Listen, I work with a former Partridge disciple and this morning he was like you can have all the pressures in the world in this defense but if you can't get home, you probably aren't that good. Bates/Duzz scheme up a ton of pressures to get guys loose and if you still can't get home, that's not a good thing.

Ah, the janitor who "hears things" in the boiler room through the vent from the executive meetings and then goes home, puts on a tie, and pretends to be a Wall Street big wig is back again. If you know everything about the intricacies of Pitt football, why don't you have a position on the staff?

Why were we paying Hayes what we were paying him if he's so replaceable? Did you ask the disciple that?

The only thing you've proven is you don't really understand what your watching on Saturdays.

Okey dokey. We'll see if Hayes' replacement amasses the same pressure rate this year as he did las season.

You gonna answer my question? You know everything about the intricacies of Pitt's X's and O's so, again, why aren't you being employed by the staff?

#1 - his pressure rate led to what in this defense? 73rd in the country in scoring defense? 66th in the country vs the run? 89th in the country vs the pass?

#2 - dude it's basic football. You don't need an advanced degree to see his limitations as a player. He's a poor man's Joe Clermond @ best and that's probably a slight at Clermond.

Why was he the highest paid defender on the team? The coaches are in pretty constant communication with the significant NIL funders. Should they not have told them to not renegotiate Joe's Dayon's deal twice since December?

And we were 116th in passing offense. Can someone get the memo to Bub Means to stop impressing NFL scouts with his workouts and go work at Pep Boys? Can't overcome that team statistic!

Oh so now we have inside info on the NIL funding? Where did we hear this, at the water cooler or by the copying machines?

I was talking to one of Bickell's disciples over supper. We try to meet the second Wednesday of each month.
