that will be the question in the candidates mind more so than the money or the current state of the program. The money will be there for the right higher and the right higher won’t look at the rebuild as something that they can’t overcome. What the candidate will ask themselves is this. Is 10-8 the best I can hope for considering Duke and North Carolina and Virginia as blue bloods.

Pitt was once a number one seed coming out of the Big East. The Pete was once a packed house with a top 10 ranking as the toughest venues to play at. There is history that says Pitt can be better than average in the ACC.

There is also the fact that the top schools will have their coaches retire soon and they are also capable of making a bad hire. Most of you older posters will remember North Carolina and the debacle after Dean Smith retired. His assistant took over and bombed for two years and then favorite son Brad Daugherty took over and bombed again.

The new coach will be the one who feels that the ceiling can be high and therefore takes the job with commitment and belief. Even the best coach available might have his agent telling him that the best he can do at Pitt would be a 10-8 type of year. If they truly believe that the ceiling will always be around 10-8 because of the conference history then they aren’t taking the job.
