Its been rumored for some time, not a huge surprise. I think its time a qualified Pitt alum is at least qualified. Who is the broadcaster and former Eagles exec mentioned last time? Very well regarded.

Story's been around since last September. Barnes has close relationship with Oregon state FB Coach. If he does go, do we get (partial) refund from search firm?

Eh, search firms got us Pederson and Barnes. If there are qualified Pitt candidates I'd like to see them get a shot. No, I'm not talking someone like Wanny.
I believe Wanny should be considered with other PITT people!
Search firms are only as good as the people who hire them.
I deal with them a lot for global hires.
You have to tell them what you expect, and be involved in the process. They do the leg work but you have to provide them with continuous feedback.
If you wait until the end of the seach process to get involved you will get screwed. Don't ask me how I know that!
They want to get it done, get their fee, and move on!

After thinking about this more PITT 's athletic program is a disgrace. PITT is a high end academic institution but cant seem to get its act together regarding its athletic program.
What U has problems hiring and keeping a quality AD. Well PITT does. I understand the coaching issues since on any given year that's a game of musical chairs.
But the AD??

They will be looking for someone with AD experience. Someone with a track record for fund raising. Money is the lifeblood of any athletic program. There are no "Pitt guys" that currently fits our need. Gallagher will hire the best guy possible.

I'm a younger poster, so all I know was that we had some dark years until Walt took over in 97. Are you trying to say it was almost shut down?
Oregon State is one of the worst and poorest athletic departments in the Power 5. It's not exactly a standout academically either. It is a definitive step down. Athletic directors don't usually jump ship in less than two years. Now, he has spent a bunch of time in the Pacific Northwest and may just be jonesing to go back, but it could also be telling you quite a bit about what may be going on behind the scenes. In any case, if he leaves at this point, it almost is certainly for reasons in which you don't want him to be at Pitt any longer.
