What were Pitt's 3 best bowl wins and the 3 worst bowl losses?

And my BEST Pitt Bowl game was immediately in my head as well, Georgia vs. Pitt, Sugar Bowl, but not the 1976 Championship team, the one in 1983 where Georgia had Hershell Walker and Dan Marino hit John Brown with a long TD pass in the last minute to win.

I've only been around this board a short time but peculiarly there are many questionable "fans" who seem to spend a lot of time on a Pitt sports board competing to show who has the LEAST interest in Pitt sports. Baffling.

Of course that was hideous loss and nobody can remotely question it. Just like the Tangerine Bowl of (whatever year) meant zip in importance to the world, or even to college football that year, and certainly did nothing to improve our teams fortunes...but I still have the image in my head to this day of Tyree Young rumbling with a fumble for a clinching td, and the high fives all around with my friends. Is it the same euphoria as the birth of my kid? No, not by a trillionth, but it's there.

Sorry not buying that you just joined this year. You seem pretty well versed (made some good posts) and navigate well to believe you are a newbie. Just can't figure out your previous handle yet....

That's not even a question, since it's hypothetical and you can't do it if you wanted to. All I'm saying is that each game is each game and I watch each one with out trying to figure out if it means more than another one.
I was agreeing with you. Although yes in a way I was saying the psu and Clemson games were undeniably much, much, much, much more important games than the pinstripe bowl.

I went to Pitt in the late 90s and would say since I've been closely following the team, the Sun Bowl is the worst bowl game by far. The trip to El Paso was awful and it was a terrible place to spend New Year's. Luckily I had some friends there with me to ease the blow. When we lost to Houston in the Armed Forces Bowl we had been SOPing for so long that it didn't even surprise me. It would rank as the second worse loss in that stretch. The 3rd would be the actual announcement of being selected for the BBVA Compass Bowl 3 years in a row. NO team should EVER have to go through that torture.

The highlights of the bowls since that time would be the wins in the Tangerine and Insight Bowls and the trip to the Fiesta Bowl as it was the only BCS bowl that we ever made it to in that era. We got whipped against a non-P5 opponent, but for those who went, it was by far the best gameday experience of any bowl Pitt has played in the past 30 years.

And the Bowl victories over NCSU and Oregon State were very underrated wins, imo. Take a look back at those rosters. The Pack & Beavers had some really good talent and Pitt totally dominated.

Another clunker of a game was the 41-7 loss to Southern Miss in the Liberty. The blow was lessened at the time in that we were just thrilled to be in a bowl game.

I was at that Liberty Bowl game. It was New Years Eve and freezing cold and we stunk all day. Me and my brother got drunk on whiskey we snuck in and made a long road trip back to Louisville, KY where I was living at the time. The game before was a huge comeback against WVU that got us bowl eligible but that Liberty Bowl was just awful. Pistol Pete was at QB

Well, I'm not new to message boards. I had a business association with Ohio State (no degree...just like the players! Boosh!) but got interested in their teams as a result, as a number of their grads are my friends as a result. Read more than posted. Then something went awry with their accounts a while back and they lost all passwords or such, I couldn't get back in, and didn't bother any more.

I have two Pitt degrees and do follow our teams closely as it likely seems clear, but didn't really bother with Pitt message boards here because, well, there's been not a whole lot to be excited about. Compared with Ohio state's boards any way!

I got the bug to get on, sad to say, by anger over the Barnes leaving, which was somewhat around the Duquesne hoops loss, then the ugliness of the bowl game. A buddy of mine i typically commiserate with, moved out of state, so I needed a way to vent...

That 2000 Insight Bowl was fabulous in its Wlatocity. Iowa State had a defense that was ranked something like 110 against the run and yet he refused to give the ball to Barlow. And, since we love handing other schools records, that was Iowa State's first-ever bowl win.

LOL, record books should have asterisks (or perhaps marks shaped like Pedersen "tooth" logo) next to its entries that occurred when playing Pitt. Especially all the schools this year whose QB and WR established new passing and receiving records vs. us.

I nominate the '80 Gator for both lists. It was good because we obviously kicked SC's ass. It was disappointing in that we were screwed out of playing in the Sugar Bowl vs UGA for another National Title.

3-0 Sun Stinker has to be one of the worst. Maybe the SMU Cotton Bowl can go on the list as one of the most disappointing. And Fitz's last game in Charlotte.

Pitt wasn't screwed out of the Sugar Bowl in 1980(Jan 81). Yes they deserved it over ND, but FSU, who beat us by 14 deserved it over us

You could certainly make that argument. Although FSU's loss was to a team that lost 3 games. I think Pitt was the better team in 1980.
