Thank the Rose and Sugar Bowls for locking in their kickoffs times when they signed with ESPN. I don’t get how the New Years Six non-playoff games are special when they have other games against them, today the Regional Deparment Store Bowl was on at the same time as the Peach Bowl and on Jan. 1 the Australian Themed Chain Restaurant Bowl and Citrus Bowl are up against the Fiesta Bowl.
Under the pre Bowl Alliance, BCS, Playoff format we’d have a New Years Day that looked something like this.
Noon - Cotton Bowl #14 Texas(best old SWC team) vs. #11 LSU(at-large)
1PM - Fiesta Bowl #8 Michigan(at-large) vs. #6 Georgia(at-large)
4:30PM - Rose Bowl #5 Ohio State(Big 10) vs. #9 Washington(PAC 12)
8:00PM - Sugar Bowl #1 Alabama(SEC) vs. #3 Notre Dame(at-large)
8:00PM - Orange Bowl #4 Oklahoma(Big 8) vs. #2 Clemson(at-large)
The Sugar Bowl would have signed up Notre Dame around Veterans Day, if Alabama wins they’d be outright National Champions and if Notre Dame and Clemson both win there might be a split, depends on how both teams won. Also, the ACC didn’t have an automatic tie in until the late 80’s so Clemson could go to whoever invited them. UCF is basically the 1980 Pitt team and gets relegated to the Gator Bowl.
