Just watched Dorian Johnson get hurt. Conner's out. Why bother accepting the invitation to these stupid bowls when guys like Johnson and Conner are at risk of losing their draft stock and guys like Whitehead need to just rest. It's no fun as a fan watching the backups play.

I feel like lots of us were hoping this would be the culmination of a very solid season. Instead, it's been the opposite with injuries and awful execution all around. Northwestern just has been way more fired up for this one.

6-6 and 5-7 teams get fired up for this meaningless crap. Team's with good players that didn't make it to the playoff should just refuse the invitation.

Because there are 85 players on teams who also get a opportunity to show what they have. It's a shame that anyone endures an injury but that is the game of football.
is about those players that will never play professionally every bit as much as it's about the guys destined for the league.

Could this game get anymore challenging for our Panthers. C'mon DiNucci, show that W. Pa. swagger like so many W.Pa. QB's that have come before you.

H2 PITT !!!

For the crucial and vital extra month of practice time.

That's a crock. If the game isn't being played to determine a NC, it's meaningless. This game Pitt is in is so meaningless, it's off the radar. For players like Conner, Johnson and Peterman to get hurt playing a game like this is a rotten shame. None of them should have played at all. If you want to let the rest of the kids besides the players with draft status play, go for it. But this is just stupid.

Let me put it this way. For those of you saying this bowl game means something: do you own a "Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl Champions" shirt? Any of you? I doubt it. Why? Because that bowl game like all the other ones is meaningless.

Because they are competitors and not internet armchair QBs that got picked last in gym class.
Well they certainly didn't compete today.....Did they practice with any intensity of purpose Or did they just shot their load In the Syracuse game?? Embarrassing to all !!

It's the millennials. They think everyone should get a trophy. No one outside of a few Pitt and Northwestern fans will remember who even played in this game, let alone what the score was.

Absolutely they are completely meaningless. But it's still a game, the same as every other game all season. A win gives you an extra win on the season. The game itself is meaningless, but at 8-4 a win or loss today made or broke Pitt's season. 9-4 is a good season, 8-5 is another disappointment.

Meaningless? Ask a player. It's not about the fans, as they've given nothing. These guys want to play.

For most teams, the entire season is meaningless from a results standpoint. At some level, the players play because they enjoy it. Fans watch because they enjoy it. Pitt will not compete for the national championship next season. Why play at all next year?

Bowl games=. $$$$ more practice time and for those 85 kids it's a reward, hey it's football and guys get dinged up, nobody from Northwestern got drugged off.

Winning a bowl game even is meaningless. It is literally the definition of meaningless. The trophy is meaningless. The only thing that matters is how winning or losing affects your overall season and record.

Remember 2001? We won the freakin' tangerine bowl. Who the hell cares we won the tangerine bowl. What mattered was we won 6 in a row to end that season, including that game to finish 7-5 instead of 6-6. That's what matters, the individual game is just another random non-conference game.

Question....if this were a game against Boston College on December 3, would you be calling that meaningless? Given how Pitt wasn't going to reach the playoffs.

I wouldn't call a regular season game meaningless no matter the opponent's record or Pitt's record. At the end of the year that game counts towards your final w-l record and where Pitt finishes in the ACC. A fake postseason game does not matter.

People talk about how Pitt did in the ACC in previous years. They don't talk about how Pitt did in their bowl game. Whenever posters want to argue about the past they bring up regular season records. Not bowl game results.

BS. These guys are big kids now. The days of participation trophies is over for them. They didn't win during the regular season and therefore don't deserve a "postseason" bowl game.

By your logic of all bowls being meaningless and only the playoffs matter, why not?
Given the set up of the four team playoff, finishing 3rd or 5th in the division doesn't really matter much.

Btw, only miserable sobs view all the bowls as participation trophies.

I bet you if you polled every player on the Pitt roster they'd disagree with the entire premise of this thread

and Conner said he could have sat out but didn't want to. He wanted to "finish what he started"

Yup! You can tell who played the game and who didn't in this thread.

Then have a 16, 24 or 32 team tournament and MAKE IT MATTER! I don't watch so they can go pro, I want to be entertained. F this meaningless sht make it MEAN SOMETHING.

I'm all for holding out the starters, or at least holding out the players who might be drafted, to let the bench players and subs get a chance to play a game. But there is no way players like Conner, Peterman, Johnson, should have played today. No reason for that foolishness.
Why play the season at all, just train for the draft.

So it's Ok for you that only 4 of 120 teams should get a post season? I agree with you, as long as you're advocating a playoff of 16-24 TEAMS OR MORE.

I'm not directing this at you,but making a point here.If they are meaningless. Why so much bitching and moaning because we lost? I knew earlier this week I would see how meaningless the game was if we lost. They aren't meaningless.

That's why when people say winning a mid tier bowl game is like being in the Sweet 16. I think that is wrong. At least sweet 16 you have a chance to advance. In FB, you just win a mid tier bowl game.

Because like I said, it was huge to get a 9th win to finish the season. Winning the pinstripe bowl itself wouldn't be a big deal, but we were at 8-4 so this was our shot at 9 wins this season. When you look at the whole season it wasn't any more important at all than any other non-conference game. It was just our last chance to make a decent season out of this. All I'm saying is a bowl game looked at as an individual game is no more important than the PSU or ok st game this season.

Northwestern players didn't seem to think the game was meaningless. They were hype from start to finish.

Personally, I had a blast going to the game and enjoy watching an extra month of college football.

Most players want to play games ... don't you remember practice is hard work and games are good fun ... it's why we play sports because we like the fun of competition ... not to be watched and judged by ESPN
