With the portal in college basketball

Similarly, doing just well enough to keep your job and then having no one with any talent sitting on your bench so you completely collapse and get fired the following year doesn't really do you much good either.

Like I said before, if Capel thinks that there is any chance at all that he has a job beyond next year then he simply must recruit as if he's going to be here beyond next year. If he doesn't he's a moron.
He’s got a commitment from a hs kid for the following yr so he’s not given up on them , but being successful in the portal is far more important right now to him . He needs results and he needs them now .

Capel has no chance to be here for 2023-24. If he makes the NCAAT next year, his stock will be back to being not terrible so I think he takes an A10 or AAC job or maybe a good mid-major to try to work himself back up.

What??? He is going to leave PItt after a successful season to take a mid-major job? Come on, that is just crazy.

Yes. Similar to Ed DeChellis and Steve Lappas. Even if he makes the NCAAT next year, he would be returning nobody and be looking at possibly 0-20 in 23-24 and his HC being over. So he gets out while he can and lands a semi-decent job where he can build himself back up. Some of you guys lack critical thinking.

It certainly is MORE important. It is not the ONLY thing that is important.
That’s why he’s still recruiting hs kids for 22/ 23 and has a verbal from Barnes for 23 . I’m sure if a talented hs recruit de commits from another school he’d be happy to offer . Saying that his immediate future rests with the portal .

Here’s true critical thinking: If Capel makes even the NIT next year, let alone the NCAA, he’ll be back for the following season. Pitt would be thrilled at that. In these political times especially, Pitt (more than most) definitely does not want to let go a minority coach who has been proactive in social issues. If he continues floundering as a coach they’ll have no choice, but if he can show even the minor milestone of an NIT they’ll have safe justification to keep him on.

Plus, Pitt admin is not stupid (well, not since burned by Barnes/Stalling anyway), they know that without acquiescing to the boosters activism and player payola that are required for true year in and year out excellence in basketball, it really doesn’t matter who the HC is. If a guy like Capel can’t draw flies, nobody else (short of the rogues that Pitt would never consider) will do better. Our best coach in history and a likely BB HOF coach wasn’t able to attract anyone by his last couple years.

That’s the truf folks.

I am never wrong about these things and I assure you that even if Capel wins the NIT, he is gone if there isnt a realistic chance that he will make the 23-24 NCAAT. If he wins in with 3 graduates + Hugley and Hugley leaves and is staring at 0-20 for 23-24, he aint coming back.

In some ways, next year is similar to Stallings Year 1. He has some ACC level players as upperclassmen but currently 0 ACC level underclassmen. 23-24 could be 0-20 because of this.
