Here’s true critical thinking: If Capel makes even the NIT next year, let alone the NCAA, he’ll be back for the following season. Pitt would be thrilled at that. In these political times especially, Pitt (more than most) definitely does not want to let go a minority coach who has been proactive in social issues. If he continues floundering as a coach they’ll have no choice, but if he can show even the minor milestone of an NIT they’ll have safe justification to keep him on.
Plus, Pitt admin is not stupid (well, not since burned by Barnes/Stalling anyway), they know that without acquiescing to the boosters activism and player payola that are required for true year in and year out excellence in basketball, it really doesn’t matter who the HC is. If a guy like Capel can’t draw flies, nobody else (short of the rogues that Pitt would never consider) will do better. Our best coach in history and a likely BB HOF coach wasn’t able to attract anyone by his last couple years.
That’s the truf folks.
