Women’s Basketball Team

Based on what?

Well, the five incoming freshman recruits all appear to address the current team's lack of speed and quickness and the recruited post player is supposed to be extremely athletic with an extremely high upside.

From ESPN (4 US Recruits):

http://www.espn.com/high-school/girls-basketball/recruiting/school/_/id/221/class/2019

From the Official Pitt Site (Adds Recruit from Greece to make it 5j):

https://pittsburghpanthers.com/news...l-white-announces-firstclass.aspx?path=wbball

Also, they have a 6-4 Center-- a Texas tech transfer coming in who will be eligible next year.

https://pittsburghpanthers.com/news...ransfer-for-2019-20-campaign.aspx?path=wbball

Then, a 6-2 forward they are recruiting hard for the 2020 class (hope they get her to commit) --is described this way by ESPN:

http://www.espn.com/high-school/gir...g/school/_/id/221/class/2020/page/considering

Athletic stretch-4 with a scorer's mentality; finesse prospect, rebounds and handles in transition; stretches the defense to the arc; active on glass; no longer a sleeper prospect.

In 2017 she was described this way--Athletic left-handed perimeter prospect with off-the-charts potential; finesse game, handles and creates in transition; mid-range game threat, rises over defenders with feathery touch.

Hopefully men’s recruiting will soon match or exceed the excellent start to women’s hoops recruiting!

Assuming she gets here, you left out Cynthia Ezeja a 6-3 player from the Greek national team that White dubbed an international superstar.

Watched an 8:30 minute Utube video of her - looks like she could help the men's team, especially against zones.

Next years team will have several 6-3 or better.

Good info, DC. One caution, of course, is that those evaluations on the women’s recruits site seem to all be quite flattering. Current freshman point guard Knight, a Coach Suzie recruit, was said to have a “scorers mentality” and “makes plays to the rim” and has a “mid-range game.” But there’s been no evidence of this, at least to this point...though she is somewhat athletic.

I like the way Coach White has the women playing aggressively on both offense and defense, and the development of Soph. Cara Judkins over this season. So I think there are positives on the coaching staff - but as we’ve all said, recruiting will be the key...

The incoming freshmen are going to play a ton, IMHO, because outside of Judkins, there just isn’t much returning talent on the team (though there’s the head-scratcher of Whitney who plays pretty well about every third game...)

Go Pitt.

I updated my original post to add the 6-3 girl from Greece. On paper, next year's team will have 5 players between 6-2 and 6-4.

Barring transfers out--it will be:

Judkins 6-2 Jr. (Returning Player)
Henry 6-3 Jr. (Returning Player)
L. Dos Santos 6-4 Jr. (T. Tech Transfer)
C. Ezeja 6-3 Fr (From Greece)
R. Igbokwe 6-4 Fr

I think this shows that Coach White realizes that a primary weakness for Pitt now and over the past several years has been a lack of height and depth in the front court. Speed and quickness has also been a problem and he seems to be addressing that with the other incoming recruits at guard and wing.

I know nothing about the recruits, so the three you listed might even start.
since we're losing players who currently do start. Judkins will definitely start
or at least play a lot. She has improved significantly since the beginning of
the season, and has room to grow even more.
Whitney has the atletic ability to up her game and get siignificant minutes.
She'll have the experience, probaby the maturity, seems to be a real team
oriented player, and as a pg she knows the system. Right now she's a
marginal ACC player, but she's tough and just might come around this
off sesaon.
I thought this team might win a few league games, but right now it doesn't
look good. These new recruits will see a lot of playing time We'll still take
our lumps next year, but hopefully it will begin the turnaround.

One other cautionary note - the incoming freshmen are going to have to play a lot, but none of them are ranked as high as current freshman Knight was ranked. Knight was a 4-star - but she has been able to contribute little this season.

That said, I can’t wait to see the incoming class in action.

We have to hope that Coach White and his staff are much better talent evaluators than Coach Suzie and her staff...

Go Pitt.

Yes, hopefully they are better evaluators. On paper, at least, most of the newcomers are touted as having more speed and quickness than most on the current roster.

The front court recruits, at least, appear to be a serious upgrade in numbers and skill level (Judkins perhaps excepted) compared to most past Pitt bigs. The Lamark Dos-Santos girl, the Texas Tech transfer, averaged 13.1 pts and 9.1 boards in JUCO and then 8.4 pts and 4.6 boards playing 20.7 minutes per game in her one semester at Texas Tech so she is somewhat of a known quantity. Compare that to Judkins averaging 6.5 pts and 4.7 boards per game this season for Pitt while playing 20.9 minutes per game.

This suggests that if those two shared the Post at 20 minutes each that we might get total production out of the position of a little below the sum of each player's past college level production (i.e., possibly about 14 pts and 9 rbs per game) which would be excellent.

I'm not sure where you got those numbers at Texas Tech for Lamark Dos Santos, but they are wrong. She did not play even one minute in her semester there.

In fact, the worst part of her time at Texas Tech is that not only did she not play any games, she wasn't even practicing with the team. Texas Tech had a coaching change in the off season and when she got to school last fall she was told by the new coaching staff that her game did not fit the way they wanted to play so she basically wasn't on the team. She spent the fall working out on her own and some with a personal trainer, but she did not practice with the team at all.

And I just want to say that I'm glad neither of our two new basketball coaches treated anyone that way, because that's disgusting.

You would think this would make a great argument to the NCAA to not have her be required to sit out until the 2nd semester next year which is currently the situation. In fairness she should be entitled to 2 full years of eligibility vs a year and 1/2.

There's no sense in worrying at all about their record this year, aside from how it might affect recruiting.

The talent level on the floor at any given time is absolutely atrocious for an ACC team. I can only imagine what Lance White, a guy who as an assistant at FSU was accustomed to being in the top 25 thought when he saw this bunch at practice the first time.

Time will tell if White can build a brand and get the athletes here on his own. But at least he understands what he's trying to recruit for ACC play. His predecessor seemingly did not understand or was not capable of attracting that type of player.

WOW! Win at all costs mentality, and this is women's hoops. Low class.

I ran into Coach White at the airport this morning, he was on my flight to Philly.

We talked for a few minutes, wished him good luck. His direct quote to me was “we need better players” and I’m on my way to recruit in Philly today.

Great personality and energy, I was ready to sign up but I’m not an 18 year old female hoops player.

I think he’ll have the program in the middle of the ACC pack and perhaps a bubble team by year 3.

BTW, Brenna Wise, who would be a senior at Pitt had she not transferred to Indiana, is playing well and averaging 13 points per game.

Indiana is 17-6 in the Big 10. Brenna is shooting 45% from the field, 44% from 3, and 93% from the foul line. She leads the team in rebounds.

Certainly this Pitt team would be different with Wise in the lineup. We have no one close to her skill level. With her, Bugg, and Gribble, Pitt would have at least a couple of ACC wins.

I wonder if Bugg might come back next season if they figure out the blood clotting problem? She would be a big help for the incoming freshmen next season.

Go Pitt.

A few days ago I sent Coach White an email to encourage him in this tough season for him and his staff. He sent me a nice reply - said they will keep working hard and he is excited for the future of the women’s program...

The girl from Greece looks like an instant impact player

To me that's so bad that I'm not sure that I'd have believed it, except the person that I heard it from absolutely would know what the situation was and had no reason at all to mention something like that if it wasn't true.
